For Better or Worse: The Competition ROUND 11

This time around, let's go with full albums. List of participants: dbizzles, AsleepInTheBack, bgillesp, CompostCompote
8The Bravery
Stir The Blood

dbizzles' WORST

Surprisingly enough, this is a much more straight-foward record than You Have No Idea, but still quite obnoxious. But while dbizzles' pick for the best album annoyed me in its all-over-the-place obscure choice of instrumental/production pairing, The Bravery rather disappoints in how unimaginative, plain and samey it is. However, it is ultimately much easier to get through than You Have No Idea and in the end is also a slightly better listen. 3.4/5

dbizzles' BEST

A colourful and striking record, but one that felt more obnoxious than adventurous a lot of the times. I just couldn't get used to the wild instrumentation and the way it was produced, even though some songs do sound like they there might be a lot of fun to be had with them. 3.2/5

BEST SONG: Epic Last Song

AsleepInTheBack's WORST

I don't know, it's nothing particularly outstanding, sure, but I also didn't think it's something terrible. It's average, forgettable, the vocals are sometimes simply annoying and the production leaves a lot of the instruments sounding just flat and dim a lot of the times. But it never really crosses the line of awfulness. Just a perfectly unremarkable album. 2.5/5

AsleepInTheBack's BEST

I feel like I'm listening to the Jim Carrey's the Mask soundtrack. It's fun and pleasant to listen to and it definitely has an incredible power to get you to moving. But the one great gripe I do have with it is that I grew increasingly sick of it by the end of even my first listen, and then gradually with my second listen too. So for now, let's just leave this goofy good-timer as it is and hope I don't grow into hating it eventually. 3.5/5 P.S.: Now I know where ArsMoriendi got his name...unless he took it from the actual 15th century texts.

BEST SONG: Retrovertigo

We'll Get Better One Day. I Promise.

bgillesp's WORST

Goodness, this is the most awkward album on the entire list. It's almost astonishingly laughable in how pompous it tries to be, with all of its ridiculously silly lyrics and the all-over-place music that tries to sound dramatic on so many levels that it quickly becomes redundant and difficult to sit through, especially when the extremely subpar lyrics kick in. And had I just heard some of the songs individually, I would have thought that it's just an underproduced attempt at sounding atmospheric, but is nowhere near godawful. However, as a whole, this album just falls apart. It's awkward and there's nothing else to it. 1.6/5

OVERALL SCORE: 1.5

bgillesp's BEST

At times it's really pretty, it manages to both hit hard and sound enthralling with its dream-like atmosphere, but for whatever reason I just found the experience of listening to this almost insufferable. It's certainly decent, but the music just seemed particularly dreary and tiring to me. 3.1/5

BEST SONG: Solar Song
2Six Feet Under
True Carnage

CompostCompote's WORST

You know, it could have been just a subpar album, but the vocals make it so, so, so much worse. Good god. This album I've heard only once and not in one sitting. And I refuse to come back to it. 1.3/5

OVERALL SCORE: 2.5+0.1= 2.6

Winds of Creation

CompostCompote's BEST

A brutal and dismal display of power and annihilating musical finesse that keeps you gripped all the way through. One particularly outstanding factor of this album is that at the time of recording, the band members were each barely 20 years old. And while I son't think this is the best Death Metal album I've heard, in fact, it'll barely get into the top 50, that one fact definitely changes a lot. It's a brutal album and a really fun one too. I might not be a fan of the vocals that much, but then again, I never enjoyed growling vocals. 3.7/5

BEST SONG: Way to Salvation
