REC ROULETTE ROUND 3 - The Brief Butcher

.....//.....
1Minutemen
Double Nickels on the Dime

BREVITY -- Round 3 is focused on short songs that still manage to sound whole and get where they're going with style and substance, as opposed to half-baked moments thrown on as filler. Rec me 3 songs that run under 2 minutes, and that aren't punk. By punk, I mean the very on-the-nose hardcore bands like Bad Religion, Black Flag etc. If you feel like a song strays far enough into a sub-genre, rec it and we'll hash it out.

69 Love Songs

For We are the King of the Boudoir

I like and dislike the baroque parlour style of this song in equal measure. I remember listening to 69 Love Songs years ago, and predictably writing off the bulk of it as something needless, even in the context of the album's theme. For its brevity, it also doesn't make much except run through its short time on the same accord. Still, it's a pleasant enough tune. 3/5

America Drinks

I do love me some Zappa, that old anarchist, and I need to re-listen to a bunch of his catalog. This one does all the right things to me, theatrical and chaotic and wobbly. Love it. 4.2/5
4Eddie Vedder
Into the Wild

bgill 3

No Ceiling

I never watched Into the Wild, but did read the book, and it is essentially an account of a prolonged hissy fit by a rich kid whose dad didn't hug him enough. His dying at the end was probably the most satisfying pay-off I've read or watched since Joe Pesci was clubbed to death in a corn field in Casino. Regardless, I quite liked this song, even if Vedder isn't high on my list of go-to singers. The song seems to fit the book's mood, it has that open road quality, and I like the abrupt end. 4/5

Copper in the Slots

This one didn't do much for me. Heavy pummel on the verses and some borderline nu-metal affectations pulling up the end. I do like the eerie atmosphere that builds before the guy starts singing. But overall, meh, this genre as a whole has a meat-headed quality, and usually sounds like a guy trying real hard to be menacing rather than actually being so. 2.5/5

Intro

I liked this one, even though it is what it is - an intro to an album. But it's cheeky and pointed, and the video bumped it up the bracket. 3.5/5

When I'm a Dead Boy

This played on my Guided by Voices love nicely. It embraces that aesthetic fully, down to the half-muted guitars and vocals that seem to come to you through gauze. Lovely stuff. 4/5

永遠はさよなら(20131125)

Well damn, I like this one a lot. French pop via Kyoto. The sheer quality of the song beats the cutesy aspects of it and the language breach. I definitely will be looking into more of this one. 4/5
9David Sylvian
Secrets of the Beehive

Fripp 2

September

I do love Sylvian's voice unabashedly, perhaps the prettiest male vocal. He has a natural longing facet that makes even his most throwaway or overdone tracks somewhat salvageable. This song served as an apt opener for Beehive, but beyond a compressed moment of beauty, it realistically offered little, especially compared to the intricate playing with mood and patterns and sound that came after it on that album. 3.2/5
10Francoise Hardy
La question

Fripp 3

Doigts

This was simple and beautiful and sensual. That's about it. I find Hardy incredibly sexy, and should really have followed her career more closely. I'll rectify that soon. 4/5
