EMO CROWN 2 - Rnd 4: Do the Math

RULES: The judges of this competition will be DeadlyNightShade, sincerelyaural, Frivolous, LandDiving, AsleepInTheBack. The competitors are as follows: Conmaniac, UniqueUniverse, Artuma. Each competitor will present 1 album per round. The judges will then rate the albums out of 5, using .1 increments. A new round will begin after the judges have completed ratings. 30 albums will be presented in total (i.e. 10 from each competitor, or 10 rounds). The winner will be determined by the highest average, but a tiebreaker system will be used if necessary; each judge will have one vote for the best rec.

Given that e = 2, m = 5 and o = 7, solve the following: hit me up with emo with math rock influences. I'm taking real heavy math rock influences here given that a bulk of the genre has at least some overlap with math rock. Proper noodly stuff pls.

Asleep: I mean, like ā€¦ erm, well ā€¦ itā€™s Snowing doing Snowing things. And I love Snowing. So yeah, simple really. 3.9/5.

Deadly: This album is right up my alley. I love the vocals, great lyricism that really hit home for me and really entertaining instrumentally. I really donā€™t have many qualms and I could really only see this continuing to grow so I will rate this on the slightly higher end of the spectrum. 4.3/5

Jack: Iā€™m aware that this is one of those moments, where my reluctance to rate everything iā€™ve ever listened to ends up being a disadvantage to every other competitor, but Iā€™ve spent some much needed time with this record in the past. Galmā€™s voice does this thing where itā€™s always, somehow, impossibly, teetering on the edge of breaking completely, but it never does; that alone is deserving of the ā€˜emoā€™ tag which is bestowed upon the band. I donā€™t like this band as much as I used to, but this album still stands resolutely at the halfway point between technical proficiency and unbridled angst. 4/5.

Frivolous: Thereā€™s nothing really bad about this album. The instrumentation is fantastic, the vocal performances are wild, the lyrics are relatable. It isnā€™t a perfect album - some of the songs could be a bit more fleshed out, for example, especially in the first half. But everything thatā€™s great about this album is so immediately obvious that detailed descriptions are redundant. 3.9/5

Claire: A bit of boisterousness mixed in with healthy doses of emotion pushed to the brink. I appreciate the level of technicality displayed within the compositions, itā€™s a refreshing take on a tried-and-true formula. 3.9/5

Asleep: Fun little album/ep that basically nails what I shall call the JANK formula: light and sporadic instrumentals + passionate gang vocals + jovial/idiotic lyrical topics (ā€œNUTEEELLLLLAAAAAā€) = good muzak. Admittedly there isn't much to it and it has all been done before, but who reealllly cares when it's this fun. 3.6/5.

Deadly: Lyrically nonsensical and instrumentally sporadic The Food Chain, leaves breathing room when necessary then comes right back to kick you with some catchy choruses, gang vocals, and energetic vocal deliveries. I took this pretty much at face value without reading too heavily into it. If you want a fun and catchy listen this does that pretty damn well. 3.8/5

Jack: Thereā€™s a pep in this albumā€™s step that seems to subtly push its imperfections out of frame. Itā€™s really in the moment -- all cheesy singalongs and sorta-but-not-really math guitar lines bouncing off each other before colliding again. It kinda feels like that awkward few seconds where you say goodbye to someone, only for you to both realise that youā€™re both walking off in the same direction. 3.6.

Frivolous: An EP that sucks you in with its boundless energy and unending fun. Perhaps itā€™s best that this is only 12 minutes of music, because it might get tiring should it be stretched out any farther. These songs are an absolute blast to listen to, even if they tend to lack a little bit of substance to them. (CT represent!!) 3.7/5

Claire: This EP seems to be aware of its identity as no more and no less than a satisfactory representation of fun. A bit of light-hearted twanginess in the guitars never could hurt. 3.5/5

Art's Rec
Asleep: ā€˜Severā€™ deliver a fascinating and unusual mix of screamo, math rock and post rock that actually works surprisingly well. Obviously these genres are quite at home with one another, but the blend that ā€˜Severā€™ produce is quite unique, scintillating and euphonious yet also brooding and lugubrious. The light math rock chords, restrained bass and boisterous time signatures clash with the brittle, distraught vocals in quite a jarring fashion to create an uneasy atmosphere as Iā€™m sure was intended. It can be a harsh and almost unpleasant listen at times, but I dig. 3.6/5.

Deadly: So Art is definitely gunna hate this comparison BUT these vocals remind me a ton of I Set My Friends On Fire. Which in this case is not a bad thing as the instrumentals on this are actually quite good by comparison to ISMFOF and my favorite part of their band was always the screams. So considering this band fills the itch that ISMFOF never could, as they were usually pretty amateur, I gotta say I really dig this. Extremely complex in it instrumentation and all the songs are fairly short which makes this EP a tasty treat. 4/5

Jack: Everything on this EP feels so close. The production is unusual; everything sticks out until nothing does. As Asleep said, it often takes the frenetic angle when making incisions into its own style and, resultantly, it feels like a final statement, a desperate goodbye. As though by paradox, though, this EP makes me hope thatā€™s not the case. 3.7/5.

Frivolous: The instrumentation on this EP is goddamn fantastic. Alternating between restrained chaos and pummeling insanity, it never loses its attention to detail. Unfortunately, the vocals are unremarkable and feel almost tacked on. 3.6/5 (would be an easy 4+ if it was just instrumentals)

Claire: Grit meets chaos wrangled through muscular instrumentation. I admit to a fondness for this sort of aural assault and battery; itā€™s visceral and claws into you. 4/5
