I've said this before with other proggy recs but what what makes “Mei” good is that it doesn't burden itself too heavily with prog cheesiness or “wank.” Even with this said though, I believe the album excels during its softer, orchestral bits rather than its rock ones. There’s certainly a wide array of influences here ranging from space rock to folk. While the vocalist isn't wholly unique or anything, he gives a great performance regardless. It’s a fun time.

An extended melodic crust jam with unrelenting riffs and fucking QUALITY drumwork. The band here is at full energy for the whole 39 minutes and never let up, aside from a short clean break about halfway through. What I found interesting about “Impervium” is that despite being a singular song, there is little repetition, the song was always throwing something new at you (Something that fans of artists like .Crrust or Comity may appreciate). As stated before, the drummer is truly the star of the show here; nearly overshadowing the rest of the band despite nothing even being wrong with the other members.

Definitely the most unique/unconventional pick here. Is it music in the traditional sense? Or more of an auditory fine arts piece? Either way it was certainly interesting. We delve into the dark and enigmatic part of Mike Patton’s brain here. Fantomas make use of a wide array of instruments, ominous sampling, and Patton vocal theatrics in an attempt to bring you an intentionally uncomfortable listening experience (think being trapped/imprisoned in your own pitch black psyche had it taken a physical form). My main complaint is that while I feel the album is good at what it's trying to do, the first half of the album is far more successful/entertaining than the other half.

The Space Between Your Teeth

This isn't a cheery or posi record. The majority of “The Space Between Your Teeth” pummels you with doom-y monolithic chords, unapologetically slow-and-low tempo, and tortured black metal vox. The first half of the album starts slow and gradually builds up speed, *almost* becoming beautiful in a tragic sense. The second half however tears that down and is especially apocalyptic, creating a massive tidal wave of aggression that I haven't heard executed so well since Buried at Sea’s “Migration.” I should also probably mention the album is free on bandcamp for anyone interested in giving it a go.

Yet another “You really haven't heard this album yet?” album. “Flood” can be divided into three parts. The first part places the listener in the most comfortable yet inescapable mental chokehold possible. Soft guitar licks repeat for extended periods of time but gradually evolve to keep your attention. After about a third of the album’s runtime passes, it instead becomes a grand wall of heavy guitar chugs. The third and final part of “Flood” is the aftermath of the 2nd part; a return to the softer repetitious style heard at the beginning of our journey. An awesome album that should most definitely be listened to in full. .

Welp, you guys def seem to have taken a darker path with your recs this round. “Marras” is an instrumental folk album taking slight atmospheric influence from black metal. I’m afraid I have no other albums to compare it to as I dont jam these kinda jams often but I thought this was quite nice. The best way I can describe this album is that it sounds just like the band name does. October/The Fall season is cold, dead, and dark. But it’s also strangely peaceful, comforting, and calm. That, is “ Marras.”
