Watching from a Distance

“Watching From a Distance” is a very emotionally charged old school doom record. This is not the album you want if you are in search of a quick headbang coupled with a heavy/distorted guitar tone. Do not take this the wrong way however, “Watching…” is indeed a heavy album, but far more so in an emotionally belak sense. Patrik Walker delivers an immensely solomon and tragic vocal performance here; this is only accentuated by dragged-out guitar riffs and a slow, massive, and hazy wall of drum beats.

Last Tape Before Doomsday

When “Last Tape Before Doomsday” isn't assaulting your eardrums with a barrage of colossal guitar chords/notes and terrifying guttural vox, it’s enrapturing you in a cleaner but cold and unsettling void.The album harbors no beauty whatsoever, as it feels like an ominous foreshadowing for the end of days. The album is exceptionally daunting, with each song slowed down to an agonizing, albeit intentional, crawl. This is certainly not an easy listen (especially with the long song lengths) but can be quite a rewarding one for fans of this style.

You may remember me mentioning headbanging and riffs earlier, well yeah they were over here. Yob do their best to bring you a swirling vortex of sludge-y doom goodness. Every song off “The Unreal Never Lied” feels like a huge, menacing march of death. Few bands come close to getting this style right without sounding bland so hearing a genuinely well made doom riff fest was a real treat. For fans of Dopethrone era Electric Wizard or Ufomammut.

A Sleepless Grey

I found this album to be a very absorbing experience. “A Sleepless Grey” certainly lives up to its name. The album’s atmosphere is not dissimilar to a dreamscape of a massive field of ashes. It’s grand in scale but it’s also shrouded in a unsettling monochromatic greyscale. The vocalist switches up between screeching vox and cleans to keep things varied, as well as taking slight influence from post metal and stoner rock at rare occasions. Interesting record and I wouldn’t have considered it risky tbh.
