| 18 albums for 18 years
Well, damn. I am now (as of yesterday), legally an adult, so I figured I'd celebrate by ranking my 18 favorite albums, a lot has changed since February. Also, no repeat bands. Honorable mentions: The Hunting Party by Linkin Park: RIP Chester, and their best album, also the band that got me into metal. Chuck by Sum41, a heavier version of them, I like this album, a guilty pleasure. With Oden On Our Side by Amon Amarth, I really like their melodic death metal with Viking themed lyrics. | 18 | | Rise Against The Sufferer & the Witness
Man, this is just a great album. Not as heavy as the rest of the list or as technically talented, but they are some great songwriters where the sum of the whole is greater than each part individually. | 17 | | Periphery Juggernaut: Omega
The second half of the double album is definitely better than the first, going for the much heavier, djenty sound they are known for. No complaints about musicianship here and sometimes it is fun to listen to something just over the top, like this album. | 16 | | Paul Gilbert Fuzz Universe
Similar to Suspended Animation, the first two tracks off the album alone are worthy. Paul Gilbert is one of my favorite guitarists and seems to be one of the nicest guys in rock. Just a great album from a guitarist who deserves more attention. | 15 | | Gojira From Mars to Sirius
Heavy, proggy, and just great. Definitely Gojira's best album to date, they rock your head off while giving you a good message about environmental care, a new genre anyone? | 14 | | Avenged Sevenfold The Stage
Taking a more prog-esque approach, The Stage sees A7x returning to hyper-melodic music after the disappointing HTTK and makes a great album out of it. Also, Synester Gates is really cementing his place as a modern guitar legend. | 13 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Calculating Infinity
On my last list of this name, I put Dissociation as my favorite, DEP album, and that album is amazing and holds a solid #2, but man, pure Math-core insanity. Solid greatness. | 12 | | Mastodon Leviathan
What list of metal can't have modern metal giants Mastodon? Crushing riffs, a quartet of vocals, and just an amazing all around experience, I mean, it is Mastodon, what isn't to love? | 11 | | John Petrucci Suspended Animation
I love Dream Theater and Petrucci is a guitar legend. Just listen to Glasgow Kiss and that song alone is worthy of this spot. Then listen to the whole album, just amazing. | 10 | | Devin Townsend Project Deconstruction
Pure prog insanity. Everything's in here, including the cheeseburger, in this masterpiece. When Devin is at his best, he is unstoppable, as this album shows. Tracks such as Juular and Pandemic are intricate and absolutely amazing. Shoutout to Transcendence and most SYL work, big fan. | 9 | | Testament The New Order
Halfway through the list. I really enjoy Testament, they should've been in the Big 4 over both Anthrax and Slayer, and The New Order is the best they have to offer. | 8 | | Queensryche Operation: Mindcrime
They created Progressive Metal, one of my personal favorite sub-genres of Metal, and this album is just great. All the songs are great, defying the trend of concept albums being terrible, especially Revolution Calling and the anthemic closing Eyes of a Stranger. Big fan of this album. | 7 | | Emperor Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk
How does a band follow up In The Nightside Eclipse, a literal genre-defining album in black metal, and a personal favorite of mine? Well, you release this album, amping everything up from 11 to 12, Anthems is a truly great album from a band that knew when to call quits before they became bad. | 6 | | Metallica Master of Puppets
As panned as they get for being overrated or selling out with/ after the Black Album, depending on your point of view, listening through Kill 'Em All through ...And Justice For All, and even a lot of the Black Album, Metallica really was a great band with great songs. In my opinion, the cake goes to MoP, everything on this album is great, just listen to Battery, the title track, or really any song off the album. | 5 | | In Flames Colony
Heavier than The Jester Race, and, in my opinion, more interesting. Stronger riffs, better solos, vocals, this is one of the quintessential melodic death metal albums from one of the better back catalogs in the genre. If only they were still good... | 4 | | Vektor Terminal Redux
A sweeping album that earns every second in its hour-plus runtime, Vektor proves that they are one of the best bands in the thrash revitalization that has been coming through. | 3 | | Iron Maiden Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
I know my sound off said this was my second favorite Maiden album, but after listening some more, Powerslave just isn't as good as SSoaSS. Absolutely no song feels like filler and has one of their greatest epics in the title track. | 2 | | Megadeth Rust in Peace
Keeping the #2 spot from last time, Rust in Peace is thrash at its absolute finest. The guitar team of Mustaine and Friedman is one of the best of all time. The entire album is legendary and I can not think of any other album from the Big 4 that match this. | 1 | | Death Symbolic
I absolutely adore this album. The riffs are beyond amazing, the solos are fantastic, the vocals are on point, and, contrary to death metal norm, intelligible. The lyrics go beyond the usual violent and into something different, something much, much more enjoyable. | |
