The Gorguts Ranked

Yeah, it was gonna happen. Took a look at some other lists but I didn't see any that quite matched what I have for the band. List is 'guts. Band is like strawberry jam on toast.
1Gorguts
Obscura

Unholy escape. The crown of perfection. Rapturous release. Hard to define this in words that haven't already been said. One of my favorite albums of all time.

Weakest track: The Sombre Art of Ecstasy. Always just stuck out to me. I just want to get to Clouded and be smothered until the end of the album.
2Gorguts
From Wisdom to Hate

This was my first favorite Gorguts release, and it also sits at a 5 alongside Obscura. The album is stacked and is an incredible extension from Obscura but with more defined groove and structure. The hammer to Obscura's nail, so to speak. I didn't actually mean to compare it to Obscura so much as it does truly stand on it's own and is full of it's own mythos to warrant it as a contender for their best.

Weakest track: I'm gonna have to go with The Quest for Equilibrium on this one. The orchestral arrangement in the beginning is great, but I feel it could be just as solid as it's own separate track to mark the middle of the album. I know that's a minor nitpick but it always pops up in my mind. And while the rest of the track is a great slow down in pace, I like the others more.
3Gorguts
The Erosion of Sanity

This was the hardest Gorguts for me to get into. Mostly to being denser than I expected and I listened to Considered Dead first. There's less subtlety than their later albums, and the songs are more packed with harder riffage that it's surprising it's actually shorter than Considered Dead by two minutes. The songs have a bleeding in effect, which at first makes it indiscernible when one would end and another starts except for the smallest pause, but I find that to be a strength now. Just keeps bringing it.

Weakest track: I have to say Hideous Infirmity unfortunately, and that's a testament to how well the album is. And I wouldn't ever consider it a filler to begin with, just every other song brings it to whole other level.
4Gorguts
Colored Sands

Awesome re-initiation of the band into the modern landscape. I sometimes feel the songs are a little longer than need be, but it has a great blend of a classic and modern sound which is actually pretty damn impressive. I'm not sure anyone was expecting this to be as unrelenting of a release as it is, and it still is a very definable album among the dissonant tech genre that arose in their absence. Absconder's and Ember's Voice rips hard. As well as Enemies of Compassion. And Forgotten Arrows.

Weakest track: This is gonna make me look like a dick, but The Battle of Chamdo. I don't see it as being necessary to the album as a whole. If I had to choose a non-interlude track, I would go with An Ocean of Wisdom, as it seems to offer less variance than rest.
5Gorguts
Pleiades' Dust

Expectations were high for this, especially being such a hard fan of Chaining the Katechon by Deathspell and wanting other bands to experiment with this style of format, and it doesn't really disappoint. There's some obvious predictable song pattern changes within, but when the band is in a stride for the few minutes at a time, they're doing what they do best. I see this as being a teaser to what may come of a new full length at some point in the future (hopefully). Also, this on tape is more fun for some reason.
6Gorguts
Considered Dead

I felt so very middle of the road on this album for quite some time, and it's six spot here doesn't at all mean its passable. Stiff and Cold has become one of those classic dm tunes for me. And Disincarnated and Considered Dead are both fucking sweet tracks. The album as a whole just sorta blurs together for me in a writhing sorta way, and would have benefited from a little more structure song to song. Sometimes I'll only listen to this halfway tbh, even though I know it's all good, similar to Scream Bloody Gore. Shoutout also, to Bodily Corrupted and that double bass in Waste of Mortality.
7Negativa
Negativa

Throwing Negativa here for bumps.
