woodfall by musk ox is great
rockhill by beltaine isn't necessarily dark but it's amazing
palingenesis by nebelung
dauthra dura by forndom is fantastic, very similar to wardruna |
neekafat
04.19.18 | Oh you mean like black metal folk, not actually good folk that's dark |
Drifter
04.19.18 | Oh |
Atari
04.19.18 | neek there’s no “black metal” here ;) I could’ve said neofolk but I just like the term dark folk better. I like all different kinds of folk so if u want to rec something don’t hold back
@budgie, thx for the recs! I’m familiar with a few of those but not all, so I’ll rectify that |
neekafat
04.19.18 | I'm just teasing buddy haha! The foreign names threw me off so I started making loud general assumptions c:
I'd be glad to! Let's try some
The Swell Season - The Swell Season (more depressing than dark... if that makes sense)
you already nailed Phoebe Bridgers and Haley Heyndeicrsaksx so let's round out that trifecta with
Julien Baker - Sprained Ankle |
ScuroFantasma
04.19.18 | Vali and Nest rule. Imo this compilation is one of the best things ever created, you'd probably dig it Atari:

04.19.18 | @Scuro, yeah man that is a fantastic collection of instrumental dark folk and if I remember correctly a lot of those songs (if not all of them) were only released on that album which is really cool to hear from Vali, Musk Ox, etc.
Great list Atari! That new Sangre de Muerdago is so good. It's really remarkable how they are able to consistently put out such stunning music. Aside from having one of the best names for an instrument, that hurdy-gurdy really pulls their sound together so well. There's so much going on instrumentally, but everything is so audible and effectively used. Lots of good stuff coming out this year, but I think this is my favorite so far. |
DungeonBoy
04.19.18 | @budgie, cool to see Forndom being rec'd around here. Saw you already rated Flykt, but that album is one of my favorite of the pagan/ritualistic/meditative/ambient dark folk styled albums. |
bnelso55
04.19.18 | What a list! Can confirm that 1-5 & 7 are all top-tier. I'm a bit embarrassed to say that I just recently learned that Winterfylleth's latest fits into this vein, though. I'm on my first listen and I can say that I foresee this becoming a favorite. |
Atari
04.19.18 | @Scuro, hell yeah man I heard that comp when I first got into neofolk a few years back...it was indeed excellent. thanks for the reminder!
cheers Dungeon! Yeah Sangre de Muerdago's last one was spectacular, so I was worried they wouldn't be able to match it. My 4 was also a placeholder rating like yours and it's only likely to go up
and thx bgillesp, and neek for the recs
@bnelso, glad to hear it! Frithgeard is one of my most-played tracks but the whole thing is bloody gorgeous |
ButteryBiscuitBass
04.19.18 | 1 is so gooooooooooooooooooooooooooood. Love all of these but I've not heard 7, I'll check that right away!

04.19.18 | Dark folk definitely needs to get more love on sput. Here are a couple of recs, if you haven't listened to them yet:
Disemballerina - Undertaker
In Gowan Ring - Hazel Steps Through A Weathered Home (also some psychedelic influences)
Nature and Organisation - Beauty Reaps the Blood of Solitude
Nature and Organisation - Death in a Snow Leopard Winter
Trobar de Morte - The Silver Wheel |
DungeonBoy
04.19.18 | @Elynna, bnelso55 introduced me to Death in a Snow Leopard Winter a couple years ago and it quickly became one of my favorite albums of all time. It is so amazing from start to finish. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys beautiful piano and cello compositions |
ButteryBiscuitBass
04.19.18 | Cheers Elynna, some stuff to check there! |
budgie
04.19.18 | damn just finished the death in a snow leopard winter album. fantastic. |
bnelso55
04.19.18 | Cheers, Atari! Frithgeard would be among my top picks after the first listen. Great record overall.
Glad to see Forndom and "Death in a Snow Leopard Winter" being mentioned here. For those who like the latter, I'd recommend checking out Nachtreich's "Trugbilder". It's a bit harsher in places, but I'd say there are moments that channel the sort of crestfallen beauty found on Snow Leopard. https://nachtreich.bandcamp.com/album/trugbilder-delusions |
