| Record Store Day
Definitely mixed feelings on the whole shebang, especially since there are so many musicians playing vocal critic for how it kinda screws over normal vinyl production. Also, Jason Isbell's live EP, which was initially pretty damn high on my to-get list, has been publicly disavowed by the man himself, so... Nonetheless, still a good excuse to get out there and support indie retailers, and there's a decent haul this year, even without Isbell's addition. List is mostly artists with 'sclusies I still intend to scope out. Feel free to chime in with your thoughts on the event as a whole--and, for those of you in favor, anything on your own to-get lists. | 1 | | The Casket Lottery Choose Bronze
Dropping a vinyl remaster of their first three full-lengths, which works out, since I've only got the third of those (along with Real Fear, which is great in its own right). Probably ain't gonna be cheap, but the quality is absolutely there. | 2 | | Daughter Music From Before the Storm
Hands down my top reason for trekking out. This one's been out digitally for a bit, but is finally getting a proper physical release. Band has yet to disappoint, plus this will make me feel substantially less guilty about streaming it for free online so much. | 3 | | Fleet Foxes Crack-Up
Doing a 7" of alt takes. Won't be heartbroken if I can't snag it, but their Electric Lady Sessions from last year ended up being a very solid addition to the already-stellar Crack-Up, so this one's certainly on the list. | 4 | | Florence and the Machine Ceremonials
Doing a 7" of two new songs. Any Florence is welcome Florence, in my book, even if her latest full-length was something of a letdown. Still, looking forward to this as a hopeful return to form. | 5 | | Kevin Morby City Music
Doing a split 7" with Waxahatchee. This is definitely another nice-to-have (vs. need-to-have), but both Morby and his counterpart's latest albums were quite good, and it would be a shock if each of them covering an artist of Jason Molina's caliber turned out anything less than captivating. Plus, looks like this one's proceeds actually go to charity, to boot (MusiCares, for those curious, which is sadly appropriate, given the content). | 6 | | The National Boxer
Live recording of the entire album, done in Brussels last year in honor of its tenth(!) anniversary. This is definitely another top pick for me, since this and High Violet consistently trade spots as my favorite National album, and they bring a frankly pretty surprising amount of energy and volatility to live shows, so it'll probably have at least a handful of curveballs that make this record transcend pure played-straight cash-grab. | 7 | | Quicksand Interiors
Dropping Triptych Continuum, an 12" EP of b-sides from Interiors. Rounding out my top 3 to-gets for sure, its parent album was far better than it had any right to be, so the more the merrier here. | 8 | | Sufjan Stevens Exploding Whale
Mystery of Love 10" EP, collecting his contributions to the Call Me By Your Name soundtrack. Another definite nice-to-have, but not a priority, since all of these songs are readily available on the full-length soundtrack itself; nonetheless, "Visions of Gideon" is an absolutely gorgeous tune, so the chance to hear it in full-blown vinyl glory is still fairly enticing... | 9 | | Steven Wilson To the Bone
Dropping a 12" EP of some b-sides. To the Bone was a lot more impressive and fun than I expected it to be, so this should conceivably follow suit. Again, won't be devastated if I miss it, but could be a goodun. | 10 | | Waxahatchee Out in the Storm

04.19.18 | Also, while I'm there, a few non-RSD things I'm tryna pick up are the new albums from A Perfect Circle, Janelle Monae, and Paul de Jong, as well as attempting to find a used copy of Control by Pedro the Lion. | SCREAM!
04.19.18 | Good things about RSD: Sales on records
Bad things about RSD: Pretty much everything else | SandwichBubble
04.19.18 | Numero Group label has the right idea about RSD. I stopped collecting vinyl a few years ago and apparently they're charging 2x as much as a cd now for some of these new releases? Pass. | thecheatisnotdead
04.19.18 | Yeah, a lot of the "exclusive reissue"/RSD-first-style stuff I fend pretty stupid, honestly. | Drifter
04.19.18 | I wonder if that ep of b-sides are the ones that came with the deluxe pre order book thing | CugnoBrasso
04.19.18 | Not a big High Violet fan, but Boxer and Alligator are two masterpieces. Preordered the live vinyl, my expectations are not so high but still. | thecheatisnotdead
04.19.18 | Yeah, sound quality's always hit-or-miss with that type of thing. Still, fingers crossed. | CugnoBrasso
04.19.18 | If I had money to waste, I would have taken this one as well:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ob3SSUI1HR0 | thecheatisnotdead
04.19.18 | Haha that's a combo of absurd and awesome wholly befitting that band. | BAG
04.19.18 | if i can get that touche demo i'll nütte | thecheatisnotdead
04.19.18 | Huh, didn't notice the Merzbow release first time around, that may well find itself on my list. Just started getting into them lately, as a matter of fact. | CygnusX1
04.19.18 | Nothing exciting for me this RSD, but I'll support my local record store this weekend. Overall I think RSD is iffy, expensive re-releases and exclusives just for one day seems too gimmicky. I do like how it generates more business for record stores tho. | cold
04.19.18 | I'm stoked on the Touché Amoré demo re-release | budgie
04.19.18 | wouldn't mind grabbing the celtic frost record, but otherwise.. nothing, really | BlackwaterPork
04.19.18 | Gotta get that RTJ record box | thecheatisnotdead
04.19.18 | May keep an eye out for Touche Amore, but that's another nice-to-have for me. It's definitely more gimmicky than not on the whole, unfortunately, especially when you look at the amount of picture discs/exclusive color variants/stuff like that on the release list. Which, y'know, is all perfectly fine if that's your thing, but really not mine, I much more prefer the new/exclusive music aspect of it, though those seem to be getting fewer and further between. | wham49
04.20.18 | I am not huge on it, 90% are things that you can get half the price any other time without a RSD sticker, however there are some things to get excited for each year, I am a Grateful dead fan and they always put out something killer, this year 2/27/69 for the first time on vinyl awesome, I know Jack White puts out cool things, and some other just have to pick and choose wisely | mortifierftw
04.20.18 | Honestly on record store day I never get any of the special releases, I just get some friends together and try to find some shit that I like | DominionMM1
04.20.18 | fuck rsd i'd rather just spend that money on discogs for stuff i actually want | Frippertronics
04.20.18 | Looking to pick up the new Kevin Shields/Brian Eno 12" and The Residents' Warner Bros. album, just to name a few. | Sinternet
04.20.18 | gonna pop along but the release list gets worse every year, half of it is just 'release from artists who died this year' and the rest is mostly bands putting out mediocre b-sides and out-takes
two years ago I bought 8 records and had a hard time getting it below 20 on my wishlist, this year there are 4 I'm actually interested in | Sinternet
04.20.18 | i like queueing up first thing in the morning though especially as my record store gives out a load of cool free stuff like posters/promos/tshirts and such to the earliest people | thecheatisnotdead
04.20.18 | @Bloon: Thanks! And yeah, one good practice my local shop has implemented is one copy per person. Which on the one hand sucks if you've got a friend with similar tastes who can't make it, but on the other, well, ya snooze ya lose.
@Sin: Yeah, agreed, a lot of the Bowie stuff has felt pretty ghoulish in that way. | thecheatisnotdead
04.20.18 | Also, just noticed Wu-Tang's dropping an instrumental version of their latest LP. A little gimmicky, sure, but may try to scope that bad boy out, as well. | AsleepInTheBack
04.21.18 | Picked up Sufjan Stevens - Mystery of Love, Sigur Ros - Route One and Car Seat Headrest. Not a bad haul. Hope people get / got what they were after. | Dewinged
04.21.18 | Cheers for including 2, def would like to get my hands on it someday. That said, gonna spend the day on trip prep errands so no record day for me this year ); | Frippertronics
04.21.18 | Smae tbh | unclereich
04.21.18 | Johnny cash's at folsom prision
Jeff Buckley live a sin-e
Tim buckley
Wu tang 36 chambers cassette | bgillesp
04.21.18 | My home town store is doing a basement sale where everything is a quarter. It's not their primo stuff but you'll find records worth up to $10 down there, usually around $2-3 though. And they give you free beer. Anyway, most fun day of the year but both my fiancée and I are gonna miss it since we're out of town :( Sent a friend to live my dreams for me though | AsleepInTheBack
04.21.18 | Now that sounds like my kind of RSD | Frippertronics
04.21.18 | picked up:
David Bowie - Welcome to the Blackout (Live London 1978)
The Residents - Warner Bros. Album
Kevin Shields/Brian Eno 12"
Durutti Column - Another Setting
Swans - Die Tur Ist Zu
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King (1972 Island pink rim, German)
T. Rex - The Slider (German)
missed out on Sun Ra's Astro Black and Lou Reed's Animal Serenade, but a good day
| Sinternet
04.21.18 | Ended up just getting Mogwai - Ten Rapid and saving my money for something better | unclereich
04.21.18 | I got here an hour early and im 40th in line lol gay | SCREAM!
04.21.18 | Led Zeppelin - Coda (only zep full length I still needed)
Pink Floyd - The Final Cut
Gnidrolog - Lady Lake | bgillesp
04.21.18 | Ended up walking to a record store where I actually am and found Nektar- A Tab in the Ocean, Mothers of Invention- Overnite Sensation, and Tragic Mullato- Hot Man Pussy all for steals, so it wasn't the worst day. I sent a friend to the sale back home though so maybe he got me some stuff. | wham49
04.22.18 | I took home the Zep single, and the Doors concert, had the Allman brothers but sticker shook of made me put it back
Nothing too exciting, not a fan of repops, so I am very selective, rather hunt down an original | SandwichBubble
04.22.18 | I didn't get anything specifically for RSD, but hot damn I got a K records mystery bag thing online and I can't wait to rip that sucker open | Frippertronics
04.22.18 | Also, went back during lunch break and picked up a 1968 repress of Blonde on Blonde (which, at that point, no longer retained the Claudia Cardinale picture in the gatefold). The goodie bags were solid; there was a Dogfish Head poster, per usual, and a few singles, notably a single by one of the guys from Spinal Tap, in which the joke was that there was no single but a sleeve with a download code. | thecheatisnotdead
04.22.18 | Nice to hear most folks ended up with a decent haul.
Got most everything on my list, save for Wilson, Sufjan, and Quicksand, but ah well. Also managed to snag the Beastie Boys Lullaby Renditions LP, which is a gag gift for a friend (who hates them and recently had a kid), but one I also half-hope he lets me keep, since it has a nice novelty appeal.
Also, non-RSD, got Ornette Coleman's Shape of Jazz to Come and the Wonder Years' Greatest Generation on LP, Paul de Jong's new CD, and a big ol' pile of used books. | thecheatisnotdead
04.23.18 | ...aaaaaaaand managed to snag Wilson and Quicksand via Bull Moose's online leftover sale. Worth waking up at 6:45am. |
