you dont have an obligation to but you certainly can |
Astral Abortis
04.26.18 | People can do whatever they like, but I don't see any point in acting like it's morally wrong to support artists who have done wrong things.
If we knew anything about 90% of the faceless entities we support with our money on a daily basis, we likely wouldn't have anywhere good to get any things we need. |
Astral Abortis
04.26.18 | I mean we don't need to bother separating the grocery from the grocer so let's just jam murder nazi pedophile music and be done with it. |

04.26.18 | for the most part yeah, unless the artist themselves play a far more integral role in the art (ex: daniel johnston) |

04.26.18 | I don't think you necessarily should separate art from the artist; I think you can if you want do but you don't have to. It's entirely up to the individual to determine this. However, you shouldn't go around getting mad at people who refuse to listen to your favorite band anymore because they object to actions done by a band member, while on the flip side you shouldn't tell someone they're immoral because they still listen to an artist that has helped them through their personal hardships despite a band member doing something bad.
TLDR: Do what you wanna do and don't bother others for doing something else |

04.26.18 | It’s all about integrity. If Kurt Cobain was a diddler it’d destroy the art, the enigma and the magic which all contribute in someways to the music itself. Unless of course you’re a soulless, vapid, entitled bellend on meds with no free thought 5’ing Dream Theater albums. |
ramon.
04.26.18 | im inclined to believe 5ing DT albums has caused so much ruckus over the years that doing so in the present age would net you 17 women and a contributor tag but no one is willing to try

ScuroFantasma
04.26.18 | Oh okay, if you're just talking about the actual phenomenon of differing opinions on morality or whatever then yeah I agree. |
ScuroFantasma
04.26.18 | Nah that's not the kind of relativism I was disagreeing with, mistakenly I thought you were arguing something else. Some people, for example, think that if its culturally acceptable somewhere on the planet to, I don't know, sacrifice a baby to the cocaine gods or something, that makes it "okay" morally because it's okay in that relative context. |
ScuroFantasma
04.26.18 | Too many kinds of relativism, sorry for jumping the gun and assuming. |

04.26.18 | Yeah, I want to see a list of 'comfortably at ease with life' albums that are actually decent, bet it's absurdly short. |

04.26.18 | A piece of art stands and speaks for itself, if a questionable view of the artist is not evident in it, why would it bother you? You obviously can't look up every person that's ever played on a song you liked and check if they ever did something.
That said, of course it's only human to feel uncomfortable while listening to someone sing and know that the person that sings is a felon ... So I respect it when people don't listen to a band because it feels wrong for them and keeps them from enjoying the performance of that individual person (I myself could never, ever listen to 4, for example, so there are cases that cross the line for me). But to decline a piece of art solely because you want to feel morally superior because "nooo I don't listen to music by assholes" is just dumb, of course you listen to music by assholes, there are so many assholes in the world, it would be impossible to only listen to albums that have none of them involved lol. You also can't check because you don't know them personally (and even if you did, you wouldn't know). Sooo I understand why it would feel wrong for someone to listen to music made by criminals, but every reason beyond that doesn't really make sense. |
DinosaurJones
04.26.18 | "Also, I've never met anyone who gave a shit about what artists do other than making music"
A lot of people won't watch Chris Benoit matches after he murdered his wife and child, then committed suicide. He's also basically been erased from WWE history. But this is pretty much the same argument, a lot of people still think of him as one of the best wrestlers who ever lived regardless of his last actions in his life. |
Winesburgohio
04.26.18 | i like chris browns music if that answers your question |
Demon of the Fall
04.26.18 | I belong to the 'who cares?' side of the argument, not going to restrict my music listening to stuff that isn't made by morally objectionable individuals. And where do you draw the line? I also wouldn't realistically know about 99% of what an artist is really like, save for the few obvious examples.
If part of your love for an artists music is the emotional connection to them as a person through their lyrics/how they previously came across in interviews etc. & they happen to be the vocalist (so you're constantly reminded whilst listening) that might be trickier. |
ramon.
04.26.18 | "And where do you draw the line?"
well Yoshi recently committed tax fraud so Nintendo are out of the equation |
rabidfish
04.26.18 | maybe all your favorite artists are actually trash human beings, but it never comes out. I'm just sayin', enjoy the art you enjoy, don't worry too much about who made it. If you don't want to give artists who you think are bad people your money just pirate it! |

04.26.18 | I think the subtlety of the lyrical content can matter a bit here as well. if someone is singing about diddling kids (thank you Astral for that wonderful expression) you might be a little bit uncomfortable listening to that if it turns out the singer wasn't being satirical or whatnot, but actually reciting personal history. or again, if said lyrics are backed by massive riffs and you don't really give two shits about lyrical content much, or listening to psychos is half the entertainment for you, then hell yeah separate the music from the artist. |
JohnFire
04.26.18 | It's pretty simple for me - as long as it doesn't influence the music I usually don't care. Not gonna listen to anything made by racists. Gotta say I haven't listened to Lostprophets since this whole babyfucking thing, though. Would be easier if he'd been the bassist. Other than that I'd second rabidfish's point.

Yes, No Devotion is cool, too. |

04.26.18 | who cares? [2]
although, I find curiosity to know the artist behind the art, I really don't care if the musician is a junkie or racist or a murderer. If the music promotes that kind of shit, I lose interest listen to it.
Think the same applies to Richard Wagner, that guy was an anti-semite and his music is fantastic. |
