2008
1Metallica
Death Magnetic

A triumphant comeback by the former titans of heavy metal. After a long fucking time, they're back and it looks like this time it's for real. This is definitely not a return to roots, but more of a rebirth of sorts. It just fits them so perfectly. It's heavy, modern and cool - everything Metallica always aspired to be. Sadly, the sound here is atrocious because of a very greedy decision to release the album in a much inferior quality to the Guitar Hero release. A shame, because other than that, it's one of this year's best.
2Sabaton
The Art of War

This is probably their most consistently great album and also probably their best. It's not perfect and some of the filler songs can be pretty boring, but in the end it's an all-around extremely solid album.
3Alestorm
Captain Morgan's Revenge

Some of the songs here might be filler or unmemorable, but overall it's a good album and and great a great introduction for a band like Alestorm.
4Ancestors
Neptune With Fire

This is a fantastic stoner metal album. Really fucking great.
5Avantasia
The Scarecrow

Fantastic. I fell in love with this album from the moment I first heard it. The problem with most power metal albums (in my opinion) is that most of them are filled with filler, which are usually generic or boring even. I find it very difficult to stand out and make music that really feels unique in this genre. This album, however, definitely succeeds. None of the songs really feels like filler since all of the have their own unqiue identity, and the different vocalists really help solidify that, and make each song their own. It's a great and interesting album from start to finish, which is not something I usually say about power metal albums.
6Mercenary
Architect of Lies

This album is incredible. This band is incredible. They manages to maintain a perfect balance between heavy, progressive, and melodic death metal to a point where it seems too easy. Amazing stuff.
7Soulfly
Conquer

This album is pretty messy and incoherent sadly. Didn't like it a whole lot. But I have changed my opinion about some of Soulfly's albums in the past, so I wouldn't rule this one out completely.
