Life Affirming List

Been lately loving those jams that elate and invigorate and inspire and soothe and comfort and calm and console and do all that good stuff. Maybe it's that I'm currently trying to wade my way through the Gulag Archipelago and need a pick me up, or maybe it's just that the darker emotions that some music can stir up don't mix well with the beautiful weather and blistering heat Europe has been experiencing recently. List is some of those albums that make me soar.
1Iron And Wine
Our Endless Numbered Days

[Folk] Not always the happiest album, but good lord, there is so much warmth in these cyclical acoustic passages and progressions that refuse to resolve and just pull all sorts of goodness out of me.
2of Montreal
Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?

[Synthy-disco-type-pop-stuff] Just. So. Bloody. Catchy. And nuanced, which is neat.
3Paul Simon
Graceland

[Folk-African] Bobbing bass-lines and spiritual rhythms aplenty.
4Do Make Say Think
Other Truths

[Post Rock] This aint no cookie-cutter Post Rock, this has a real spark to it.
5Flotation Toy Warning
The Machine That Made Us

[Indie Rock] Soundscapes swirling sweetly, forever.
6Chicago
Chicago Transit Authority

[Jazz Fusion] They came to entertain, and they succeeded.
7The Front Bottoms
Ann

[Indie Rock] Currently my favourite summer jam, and one not to be overlooked as just another tired release from another tired band; imho it's probably the best thing they've done in years.
8Isaac Hayes
Hot Buttered Soul

[Soul] Ah, that voice. Like butter.
9Fishmans
Long Season

[Experimental Indie Pop] Even attempting to label a genre on this thing makes me squirm a bit; a beautiful, restless watercolour.
10Ray Lynch
Deep Breakfast

[New Age / Ambient] Still one of my fave records ever. Nothing calms me down like this.
11Ichiko Aoba
Kamisori Otome

[Folk] Enigmatic and delicate and fucking gorgeous
12Frontierer
Unloved

[Hardcore] To call this calming may be bizarre to some, but the catharsis to be found in this mathy wall of rage also soothes the heck out of me
13Jethro Tull
Thick as a Brick

[Prog] Ah, almost forgot this beaut.
14Fleetwood Mac
Rumours

[Pop] ...And this
15Rainbow
Rising

[Rock] ...aaaand this.
