| Nazz's best metal album each year 1970-2018
Josh's list here https://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?listid=183713 hopefully started the trend of Sput users making best metal album for each year lists, I'm sure most of us will have the same albums for each year but oh well!! | 1 | | Black Sabbath Paranoid
1970
The easy and default choice. Runner up: Black Sabbath s/t | 2 | | Black Sabbath Master of Reality
1971
Again, default choice.
Runner up: Alice Cooper's Love It to Death I guess? I don't have any other 71 metal rated. Bowie's Hunky Dory, Genesis - Nursery Cryme and Yes' Fragile round out my other high ratings for this year | 3 | | Black Sabbath Vol. 4
1972
I promise this list will get more diverse later. My other high ratings for this year: Bowie's Ziggie Stardust, Yes - Close to the Edge, Genesis - Foxtrot | 4 | | Black Sabbath Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
1973
Any year now someone else will pop on to the scene to dethrone Sabbath
Other high ratings: Genesis - Selling England, Doobie Brothers - The Captain and Me | 5 | | Hawkwind Hall of the Mountain Grill
1974
Okay not really metal, but I'm running on fumes for 1974 I have like 6 ratings total for the whole year. Runner up: Kraftwerk - Autobahn | 6 | | Black Sabbath Sabotage
1975
This was a year with some good shit. Runner ups: Patti Smith - Horses, Hawkwind - Warrior on the Edge of Time, Rainbow - Richie Blackmore's Rainbow | 7 | | Judas Priest Sad Wings of Destiny
1976
From here on out hopefully the runner ups will also be metal. Runner up: Rainbow - Rising | 8 | | Judas Priest Sin After Sin
1977
Runner up: Motorhead - Moterhead
Best album overall: Ramones - Rocket to Russia | 9 | | Judas Priest Stained Class
1978
Runner up: Rainbow - Long Live Rock n Roll
Best album of the year overall: Priest or The Doobie Brothers - Minute by Minute | 10 | | Motorhead Overkill
1979
Runner up: Legend - From the Fjords. A severely underrated band that you should all fucking listen to. Legend rule so hard and if it weren't for the fact that Overkill is like the second best Motorhead album, this AOTY would belong to Legend. | 11 | | Black Sabbath Heaven and Hell
1980
Runner ups: Diamond Head - Lightning to the Nations, Motorhead - Ace of Spades, Iron Maiden s/t, Judas Priest - British Steel, Venom - Demon | 12 | | Iron Maiden Killers
1981
Runner ups: Motley Crue - Too Fast For Love, Dokken - Breakin' the Chains | 13 | | Accept Restless and Wild

Runners up: Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast, shame about the first half of this album. Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance, Motorhead - Iron Fist | 14 | | HellHammer Satanic Rites
1983. This shit came out in nineteen hundred and eighty fucking three. Nothing before this was this raw or aggressive or disgusting. As important as Black Sabbath's s/t
Runner ups, and there's a shitload because 83 was the year metal really took off: Dio - Holy Diver, Metallica - KeA, Slayer - Show No Mercy, Accept - Balls to the Wall, Astaroth - Speed Black Metal. | 15 | | Iron Maiden Powerslave

Runners up: Metallica - RtL, Cirith Ungol - King of the Dead, Mercyful Fate - Don't Break the Oath, Bathory s/t, Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales, Hellhammer - Apocalyptic Raids | 16 | | Possessed Seven Churches

Runners up: Carnivore s/t, Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion, Exodus - Bonded by Blood | 17 | | Slayer Reign in Blood
1986. Of course this was going to be the pick.

Such as: ATG - SOTS, Darkthrone - Panzerfaust, Dark Tranquillity - The Gallery, Death - Symbolic - Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane, Crystal Age - Far Beyond Divine Horizons | 27 | | Cryptopsy None So Vile
1996, gives 95 a run for it's money and maybe overall takes it.

10.25.18 | NO | DarkSideOfLucca
10.25.18 | Damn

10.25.18 | Not even a joke | Keyblade
10.25.18 | need to check 36 | Nazzadan
10.25.18 | 41 was when I became a man, and yeah Key for real you do | Grimlin
10.25.18 | This one is better, but why is Black Sabbath's first album under '73? This should be replaced with Budgie - Never Turn Your Back On A Friend. It's the right thing to do.
| Nazzadan
10.25.18 | Good catch, I meant Sabbath Bloody Sabbath but I guess I got lazy and just typed "Sabbath" and hit tab assuming it would pick the right one | Coast
10.25.18 | Great trip in the m/ time machine. Runners-up a good addition. Yes Neurosis a notable omission. Despite having trawled through your 3.5+ lists still a few here to check out. | Nazzadan
10.25.18 | I've actually heard so little Neurosis. Through Silver in Blood is extremely good (but I don't have it rated for some reason?) but I'm not familiar with almost anything else in their discog. Maybe I'll run through their whole catalog sometime soon, glad you enjoy the 3.5 lists | WoodeeX
10.25.18 | disagree with 2012. Dying Fetus' released their crown jewel that year and maybe the greatest death metal album this decade. Also Ive noticed not a lot of sludge on this list. Check out Crowbar, Acid Bath, Neurosis, and Eyehategod | DarkSideOfLucca
10.25.18 | @Nazz - check all of Neurosis man, they're one of my favorite bands
@Wood - Agreed hard on Dying Fetus for 2012 | StrikeOfTheBeast
10.25.18 | Now THIS is a rad list. | Nazzadan
10.25.18 | @lucca and Woodee Ya Reign Supreme is Fetus' best album for sure, I saw them 2 weeks ago and it ruled. It's just a solid 4 for me and the pick and runner ups are all 4.5s from 2012, looking at it again Neverbloom actually should probably be AOTY.
@strike hell ye | TheSpirit
10.25.18 | you put 1992 twice | DarkSideOfLucca
10.25.18 | Saw them this summer but missed their last show - they put on such a great fucking performance every time, man. | Nazzadan
10.25.18 | Oops, 2 1992s fixed
Edit: Thanks Aiwaz m//// | joshb9864
10.25.18 | I see you took my idea and ran with it, great list. | Rigma
10.25.18 | cute | Nazzadan
10.25.18 | Josh ya it was a great list idea, I remember like a year ago there was a quick list flavor of the month of the best album from each year and a bunch of people made one but I like limiting it to metal more like yours. |
