| Concerts Closing Out 2018
Pretty self-explanatory, got a handful more concerts coming up to close the year out right proper-like. | 1 | | Minus the Bear Fair Enough
Cheating on this one, since I actually caught them on their farewell tour at the Fillmore Silver Spring last week, but can't resist gushing a bit as a lead-in. Fantastic set, can't think of any songs they skipped in their two-hours-and-change set I was heartbroken to miss. "Pachuca Sunrise" was a killer closer, but my personal favorite "Diamond Lightning" may have made the night for me. Still bummed they couldn't make it an even 20 years (though 17 is nothing to sneeze at) and give us a more substantial send-off release, but the EP is quality, if bittersweet. | 2 | | Caspian Hymn For The Greatest Generation
Opened for Minus the Bear. Interesting choice, but they definitely brought it. Interesting (to me) side note: I've seen Caspian twice, each time at the Fillmore, the other occasion opening for Underoath. Interesting company they keep. Additional fun(?) fact: At one point the friend I went to the concert joked, "I hope Minus the Bear plays 'Let's Play Guitar in a Five-Guitar Band' and dedicates it to these guys," which, fair, although in their defense, there were only four guitars going at the time. | 3 | | A Perfect Circle Eat the Elephant
Catching this band for the second time in as many years, this time at my alma mater UMBC, which is about as bizarre a pairing as you could wish for. Scuttlebutt has it that Old Man Maynard is letting fans film one song these days, which I really don't care about either way; personally, I'm just glad to get to see them after digesting more of Elephant (see what I did there?), since that album was shockingly solid, and last time I caught them was prior to its release. And because that new Tool album of myth and lore won't see the light of day until 2020, at the absolute earliest. | 4 | | Don Broco Technology
Seeing these lads at the Fillmore mid-November. They're actually opening for Mike Shinoda (we'll get to him), but Donnie and the Brocos are definitely the main draw. Been on a kick since a friend showed me several of their music videos in an (ultimately vain) attempt to convince me to come to Warped Tour. That didn't take, but they certainly did. This album, while fairly repetitive, is just fun, earworm-y as all hell. Haven't even bothered to dig deeper into their discography yet, since there's enough hooky, sugary post-whatever here to have kept me busy boppin' for months, especially after a few dranky-dranks. I still don't have the dance internalized (maybe due to said dranky-dranks), but I have a couple weeks to perfect the routine and win their hearts. | 5 | | Mike Shinoda Post Traumatic
Headlining the DB show. Still haven't scoped this album, but will definitely have to give it a spin or two before the concert. May end up getting a bit misty, since even though I fell off them hard right around Minutes to Midnight, Linkin Park was one of my first big boy concerts back in the day, and Chester honestly one of the first musician deaths that genuinely affected me, since I'd literally grown up with the music. | 6 | | mewithoutYou [untitled] e.p.
Playing Das Ottobar in early December. Shamefully, have yet to truly dig into the full-length counterpart (despite having it downloaded), but this EP has been on steady rotation since it dropped, and hot damn it's good. These guys always put on a fantastic show, and based on the early singles and online murmurings, the new songs should only further enhance that. | 7 | | The World Is a Beautiful Place... Always Foreign
Opening for mwY. Haven't caught this band live yet, but seem like they'd make for a good sonic fit with the headliner. I also need to revisit this album in the meantime, since it definitely didn't have the same impact or resonance for me as Harmlessness did. Then again, that album's a future classic, so maybe it's an unrealistically high bar.
Anyway, also opening is a band called Hold Down the Ocean, whom I've never heard of, and currently have no section on this site, so...we'll see? Delving into their Bandcamp soon, artwork at least seems neat. | 8 | | Steven Wilson To the Bone
Playing Ram's Head Live! the day after the mwY show. Getting too old to do too many back-to-back shows, especially on weeknights (egads!), but these are both super-close to home, at least. Also in its favor is that I'm going with my dad, who, being into late-70s prog himself, really bought into Porcupine Tree back when I discovered them in high school, and has arguably been a more devoted fan of all things Wilson than I have ever since. Still, a nice early Christmas present we can share, and To the Bone was a solid album that, at the very least, would seem to promise that half the set won't be eaten up by a single song. Or maybe it will? Either way, should be a good time. | 9 | | Pianos Become the Teeth Wait For Love
Playing the Ottobar the end of the same week as the previous two shows. On the fence with this one, not only for the timing (three shows in one week? What am I, a teenager?), but also since I've already caught the band twice this year (once pared back a bit at WTMD, which was a really cool set that included, of all things, an acoustic b-side I still hope finds a proper home at some point). Openers are still TBD, so that could end up being the true deciding factor. | 10 | | Clutch Book of Bad Decisions
Playing Ram's Head Live! in late December. Another iffy one, chiefly since that time of year can get pretty hectic, schedule-wise, but I'd like to make it out to this one. Their holiday shows seem to have become something of a local legend in the Baltimore/D.C. area, but one that I have yet to make the trek for, despite loving the band. Still need to give the new album a few more listens, but I'm digging it so far. Openers include Lionize and the Messthetics, neither of whom have I devoted much time or attention to, but! But! I *do* recognize the former's name, at least, and see that the latter has members of Fugazi, so maybe there's something there. Will have to investigate further. | |

11.02.18 | looks like a solid lineup of shows, might be hittin a few of these up as well. really wanna see that mwY show but gettin to Baltimore from DC blows during the week.
thinking about pianos too but will probably end up hitting up horse jumper of love and spirit of the beehive that night in DC since i've seen pianos a few times. | thecheatisnotdead
11.02.18 | Haha sounds like we're in the same boat (or, more accurately, two boats on the same river but headed in opposite directions) when it comes to the Baltimore/D.C. thing. Don't know Horse Jumper of Love, but Spirit of the Beehive are sick, so that show should be pretty nifty. | thecheatisnotdead
11.03.18 | #drunkbump | suppatime
