| My Favorite Swedish Metal pt. 1
Sweden and metal go hand in hand, like pickled herring on a Smorgasbord. The following are my favorite Swedish metal bands. | 1 | | In Flames Battles
In Flames will likely always be my favorite Swedish metal band. People can say what they want to about the album Battles, but I feel it is a good mix of their more recent progressive leanings with some old-school thrown in. | 2 | | Soen Lykaia
Early on, Soen was rudely identified as a "Tool Clone". I never saw it that way...To be even in the same league as Tool is a huge statement, which Soen definitely is in. | 3 | | Drain STH Freaks Of Nature
These ladies hit harder than most other Swedes. Sadly, Freaks of Nature was their final offering, but a great one at that. | 4 | | Dozer Madre de Dios
It is hard for me to put Dozer at #4 on this list. Could be higher, if the above bands were not so great. They are masters of the riff, and have been for many years (since their early EPs with Demon Cleaner and Unida). | 5 | | Lowrider Nebula / Lowrider
Speaking of another master of the riff. Although short-lived, this stoner rock band rules. Heard they are in the process of putting out another record (Ode to Io released in 2000)...can't wait! For some reason, slightly prefer the songs on this EP to Ode to Io. | 6 | | Amaranthe Amaranthe
Three vocalists...how can you top that! I am a bit preferential to their initial vocal concoction on this album and The Nexus, but dig it all. | 7 | | Katatonia Dead End Kings
This band is really hard to place...truly progressive and unique, but wholly dark. | 8 | | Passenger (SWE) Passenger
Essentially similar to modern-day In Flames, in sound and personnel. This was a great nu-metal release and one-off. | 9 | | Blindside Blindside
The first album to introduce me to Swedish metal. Couldn't believe that a band from Sweden was following the SoCal - Korn and Deftones promulgated - nu metal movement so closely. Loved this first album. | 10 | | Demon Cleaner Demon Cleaner
Dig this band, a mix of punk vocals with Kyuss-like grooves. Almost a bit more Fu-Manchu like... | |

02.03.19 | Honorable Mention: Also dig Asteroid, Cyhra, Pain of Salvation, Prisma, and Truckfighters | 0xME
02.03.19 | looks like you have the whole wide world of Swedeath left to explore, I'm jealous :)
since you already seem to enjoy bands with more progressive leanings I'd recommend Dan Swano as a starting point:
Edge of Sanity - Crimson I/II/Purgatory Afterglow
Dan Swano - Moontower
other obvious picks would be artists like At the Gates, Dark Tranquility, Soilwork, Opeth, Gates of Ishtar, Entombed, Dismember | CugnoBrasso
02.03.19 | I'm reluctant to label Battles as "progressive"... | FrozenVain
02.03.19 | weirdest picks for a swedish metal list | JDubb
02.03.19 | OxME, unfortunately (for both me and Sweden), I have a harder time getting into death metal. Tend to be into metal more for the heavy grooves. Will check out your recs though...thanks for those! | 0xME
02.03.19 | too bad! Based on your enjoyment of IF you should still like Soilwork (and if you like any of IF's earlier works you'll like At the Gates, Dark Tranquility and Gates of Ishtar too) | artiswar
02.03.19 | megaprops for that Blindside pick, one of the best nu-metal albums ever | TheMightyScoop
02.03.19 | “Tend to be into metal more for the heavy grooves”
old school swedeath has some of the best grooves in metal | Sniff
02.03.19 | Domkraft och Cities of March bih | JDubb
02.03.19 | I took a listen to a few newer Soilwork songs on Youtube. I could see myself digging them. Any recommendations of their albums that are on the more melodic vocal side? | 0xME
02.03.19 | from Stabbing the Drama through The Living Infinite they're pretty melodic, I haven't heard The Ride Majestic/Verkligheten tho so ymmv | BookoftheFallen
02.03.19 | I like hypocrisy | hexfix93
02.03.19 | "haven't heard The Ride Majestic"
The Ride Majestic is in the same vein as The Living Infinite (just as good so you should jam it), and Verkligheten is even more melodic tbh.
And yeah very weird list. Katatonia is sick though. When I saw 1 I thought this was a troll list though lol | alamo
02.03.19 | passenger is so crappy | Source
02.03.19 | Blindside good lad | Eakflanderyof
02.03.19 | Newer in flames gets a little more unwarranted hate than it deserves but battles is just plain bad. It has some of the worst choruses I've ever heard | ilovewhiskey
02.05.19 | @JDubb
Check out The Living Infinite by Soilwork. Such a perfect balance of clean and harsh vocals layered over some beautifully balanced melodies. Really one of the most complete albums I have heard in metal |
