My Favorite Swedish Metal pt. 1

Sweden and metal go hand in hand, like pickled herring on a Smorgasbord. The following are my favorite Swedish metal bands.
1In Flames
Battles

In Flames will likely always be my favorite Swedish metal band. People can say what they want to about the album Battles, but I feel it is a good mix of their more recent progressive leanings with some old-school thrown in.
2Soen
Lykaia

Early on, Soen was rudely identified as a "Tool Clone". I never saw it that way...To be even in the same league as Tool is a huge statement, which Soen definitely is in.
3Drain STH
Freaks Of Nature

These ladies hit harder than most other Swedes. Sadly, Freaks of Nature was their final offering, but a great one at that.
4Dozer
Madre de Dios

It is hard for me to put Dozer at #4 on this list. Could be higher, if the above bands were not so great. They are masters of the riff, and have been for many years (since their early EPs with Demon Cleaner and Unida).
5Lowrider
Nebula / Lowrider

Speaking of another master of the riff. Although short-lived, this stoner rock band rules. Heard they are in the process of putting out another record (Ode to Io released in 2000)...can't wait! For some reason, slightly prefer the songs on this EP to Ode to Io.
6Amaranthe
Amaranthe

Three vocalists...how can you top that! I am a bit preferential to their initial vocal concoction on this album and The Nexus, but dig it all.
7Katatonia
Dead End Kings

This band is really hard to place...truly progressive and unique, but wholly dark.
8Passenger (SWE)
Passenger

Essentially similar to modern-day In Flames, in sound and personnel. This was a great nu-metal release and one-off.
9Blindside
Blindside

The first album to introduce me to Swedish metal. Couldn't believe that a band from Sweden was following the SoCal - Korn and Deftones promulgated - nu metal movement so closely. Loved this first album.
10Demon Cleaner
Demon Cleaner

Dig this band, a mix of punk vocals with Kyuss-like grooves. Almost a bit more Fu-Manchu like...
