CAPSULE RANKED

i love this group so much. capsule release an album better than wave runner challenge

WAVE RUNNER

5/10
Generic big-room house, if that’s your thing. It’s not mine. Another World and Feel Again are good tracks, and that’s about it.
14Capsule (JPN)
CAPS LOCK

6/10
Really complacent chillout music
13Capsule (JPN)
World of Fantasy

6/10
World of Fantasy gets a negative rep because it leans hard into the electro-house/club sound and has Toshiko singing in english. I think some tracks have merit though - Striker and What is Love seem like awesome club songs, and when repetition is the goal, World of Fantasy succeeds for the most part. Nothing revolutionary.
12Capsule (JPN)
SF-Sound Furniture

7/10
A very energetic album. Highlights include Super Scooter Happy (which some [i.e. no one on this site] might know from the Kyary Pamyu Pamyu cover), Portable Kuukou, Ocean Blue Sky Orange.
11Capsule (JPN)
NEXUS-2060

7/10
Has a killer back-half. Beautiful Hour -> Tokyo Smiling are all bops
10Capsule (JPN)
Flash Back

7/10
Flash Back is a funky little album that flits back and forth between bangers and cute electro-pop tunes. The one-two punch of Flash Back/Eternity is great, and the ‘aerobics-instructor’ inspired Get Down will get stuck in your head.
9Capsule (JPN)
Stereo Worxxx

7/10
The superior sequel to World Of Fantasy. Better melodies, better beats. All around, a more pleasant experience. “Feeling Alright” starts the album on a stellar note, and other tracks like “In The Rain”, “Step On The Floor”, and “Motor Force” all have their own great moments.
8Capsule (JPN)
High Collar Girl

7/10
Capsule's debut sounds unlike anything else they would go on to do, but that doesn't mean it should be dismissed. High Collar Girl is a pop affair that finds Nakata toying with synthesizers and electronics very much in the background, while Toshiko takes the front-and-center, aided by strings and some jazzy-sounding compositions.
7Capsule (JPN)
Phony Phonic

7/10
A twinkly pop album with a ton of great features. Highlights are: RGB, Weekend In My Room, Lifestyle Music, Ice Cream.
6Capsule (JPN)
Sugarless GiRL

7/10
A lot of heavy hitters. Front loaded with jams - Starry Sky, Reality, Sugarless Girl, Spider are must-listens.
5Capsule (JPN)
L.D.K. Lounge Designers Killer

7/10
Previous Capsule albums floated around with their inspirations like the Shibuya-Kei scene did, but on LDK Nakata takes all the best inspiration from previous Capsule albums and places them in one collection. Highlights include Glider, Soratobu Toshikeikaku, and easy-listening interlude tiC taC.

MORE! MORE! MORE!

8/10
MORE! MORE! MORE! Marks the inclusion of straightforward pop in Capsule's repertoire. Unsurprisingly, this is the year Perfume's debut Game was released (also produced by Nakata). This is mostly here because Jumper and EDIT just go the fuck off!! Adventure, The Mutations of Life, and the title track are other highlights.
3Capsule (JPN)
Cute Cinema Replay

8/10
My personal highlight of Capsule's earlier era, Cutie Cinema Replay is at once a joyful and relaxing journey that takes some inspiration from the shibuya-kei scene and some from pico-pop. Highlights include the jingly Music Controller, the rush of Odegake Go!, and Sweet Time Replay.
2Capsule (JPN)
Fruits Clipper

8/10
Fruits Clipper is the start of Capsule as what I would call dance-able, club influenced electro-pop. Upbeat choruses and melodies still streak the album on tracks like jelly and 5ive star, but there are heavier beats as well in stuff like super speeder Judy Jedy and CrazEEE Skyhopper. The only weak point is the interlude-feeling Robot Disco, but even that's catchy so it gets a pass.
1Capsule (JPN)
Player

9/10
PLAYER is Just an insanely solid, delightful electro-pop album. Songs like Love or Lies, Stay With You and title track Player have insatiable grooves, and though the few slower tracks might not immediately grab your attention, they too eventually reveal themselves as wonderful breaks from the high energy Player brings.
