06.14.19 | Ever read Daytripper? |
naughtcturnal
06.14.19 | Ghost World, Black Hole, Devilman (manga), Paper Girls, Saga, The Punisher (MAX series) are all some of my personal favs |
Scheumke
06.14.19 | Sandman is really great so I'd recommend you get on that. It's also a great time to start reading Watchmen if you haven't, just in time for the HBO series that will be a sequel to the original comics. |
samwise2000
06.14.19 | I love Watchmen, read that countless times! I was thinking of starting Saga in october since they are releasing a 9 volume compilation for like 60 dollars. |
samwise2000
06.14.19 | @Cugno no I have not! Will add that to my to read list! |
Bazman
06.14.19 | From Hell
Super Man - Red Sun
Batman - Black Mirror, Dark Knight Returns
Sandman, Preacher and Saga for sure |
Alastor
06.14.19 | Bone is a great series.
|
garas
06.14.19 | Deathbulge! |
samwise2000
06.14.19 | @Alastor Bone is childhood favourite, love that series!
@Bazman Ive read Red Son and the Batman comics youve listed, classics. Definitely need to check out 'From Hell' though, im a huge Alan Moore fan yet I havent read that one yet. Ive even read his obscure stuff like Lost Girls. |
Sinternet
06.14.19 | y the last man is great!
you'll love saga in that case, probabbly vaughan's magnum opus |
samwise2000
06.14.19 | Y is so so great, so if Saga is better im highly anticipating reading it! |
naughtcturnal
06.15.19 | Saga is amzing, dude... And if I'm not mistaken I also think Paper Girls is by the same writer or artist (im not entirely sure atm cuz i havent read those in a real long time). But you CANNOT go wrong with Saga. |
samwise2000
06.16.19 | @naughtcturnal yes I believe Paper Girls is by the same author, is that series good too? There are some nice deluxe editions of it.
@Kaiwaz you forgot Robin Williams! |
Titan
06.16.19 | Archie |
StrikeOfTheBeast
06.16.19 | Batman: Contagion
Pretty nasty shit. |
samwise2000
06.16.19 | Ive actually heard the Mark Waid Archie series with Fiona Staples is great, so thats on my reading list too. Batman Contagion looks pretty cool, thanks for the rec! |
naughtcturnal
06.17.19 | @samwise: it's no Saga but it's great in it's own right. It has a kind of a spielberg/stranger things/80's sci-fi thing going on and the characters are super well written. Very original story concept that wears it's influences on it's sleeve |
samwise2000
06.17.19 | I was skimming through the pages at the local bookstore a few days ago and was really loving the art style! Perhaps its worth a read after Saga |
naughtcturnal
06.17.19 | highly recommended. Nice that youre reading Fables. I've read the first vol. and loved it but ultimately got distracted by other shit. Gotta pick up on that one one day |
samwise2000
06.17.19 | Its really great, ive heard it gets a bit tedious after chapter 75 or something, but so far its been a joy to read. Great art, great writing, interesting premise, what more could you want? |
TheGreatQ
06.17.19 | Only graphic novel I’ve ever read was Neonomicon, which was good up until the middle third of it was basically a giant rape scene with the most cringeworthy dialogue I’ve ever read. |
samwise2000
06.17.19 | I read Neonomicon a while ago... the concept was pretty cool (how all of the Lovecraftian tales are actually premonitions of the future) but that rape scene was way too explicit and fucked up. I know that was the whole point, and that the scene is essential to the plot, but i am going to be permanently scarred by that shit lmao. I dig pretty much everything Alan Moore does, even his weird erotica stuff like Lost Girls, but Neonomicon is literally the worst thing hes ever done. And he also said he did it just for the money, so theres that too... |
samwise2000
06.17.19 | Also RIP thats the only Alan Moore thing youve read, must have left a pretty bad taste in your mouth haha |
TheGreatQ
06.18.19 | Yeah kinda lol, especially because I loved the first part of it and the ending was intriguing. |
bloc
06.18.19 | Tintin, Asterix, Garfield, The Far Side, Calvin and Hobbes. Rest is garbage. |
J() Alexander
06.18.19 | "Only graphic novel I’ve ever read was Neonomicon, which was good up until the middle third of it was basically a giant rape scene with the most cringeworthy dialogue I’ve ever read."
Lol. |
samwise2000
06.18.19 | @bloc joking aside, those are some excellent comic strips. My dad and I used to read farside comics when I was a kid, still some of my favourite childhood memories |
bloc
06.18.19 | Who's joking |
Source
06.18.19 | What about FoxTrot bloc |
bloc
06.18.19 | Foxtrot is good, and I would put it in the same tier as Zits, wouldn't call it one of my favs though. |
Source
06.18.19 | Dilbert? |
zaruyache
06.18.19 | Bitch Planet. |
Kompys2000
06.18.19 | I remember reading Y The Last Man in like 5th grade and being scared shitless by the concept of half the planet dying overnight. Crazy stuff, I ought to re-read it sometime.
I would recommend most stuff by Gene Luen Yang, Level Up and Boxers & Saints are my personal favorites but I don't think he's ever done anything below a 7/10.
Also It Hurts!! is a brilliant webcomics that more people should know about. The artwork is pretty rough (though it does improve as it goes), but the writing is incredibly sharp and funny and there are some wonderful character moments throughout. |
bloc
06.18.19 | Dilbert slaps true. Took me 20 years to finally get the humor though haha |
SitarHero
06.18.19 | Saga is pretty dece.
If you've got a stomach for gore, The Crossed. That shit is both disturbing and pretty genuinely touching. |
samwise2000
06.18.19 | Ive heard of crossed, but was too scared to read because of the fucked up volume covers, like damn those are intense |
SitarHero
06.18.19 | Oh yeah, it's intense. You get acclimatised to the violence and sex after a bit but it's so damn bleak and well written that you're never really ready for some of the gut punches. |
samwise2000
06.18.19 | I may give it a try but im not sure i can handle it if even the covers are messing me up lmao. Its Garth Ennis and from what Ive read of some of his stuff he's a great writer, but im not even sure good writing can get me through something as fucked up as Crossed. Might save that one for Halloween haha |
Slex
06.18.19 | Sandman, the recent Vision, Monstress, Saga, Preacher, the recent Thor was a masterpiece, Planetary, The Invisibles, FreakAngels, Daytripping, I could go on forever, huge fan of this stuff |
samwise2000
06.19.19 | Anyone checked out the new Mister Miracle by Tom King? Heard that was solid |
zaruyache
06.19.19 | Planet Hulk was p great too. |
samwise2000
06.19.19 | Wasn't Thor Ragnarok heavily inspired by Planet Hulk? |
zaruyache
06.19.19 | the gladitorial bit, yeah. Ragnarok was like Planet Hulk but Thor got in the way and they escaped together before Hulk could slowly start a planet-wide rebellion and make himself king. |
SitarHero
06.20.19 | I tried WW Hulk and that shit was lame as hell. |
samwise2000
06.22.19 | Well, fuck. DC just scrapped Vertigo. Hope they still publish the Vertigo comics under the imprint, I dont want none of that DC Black Label bullshit |
naughtcturnal
06.22.19 | wasnt netflix enough |
samwise2000
09.20.19 | Has anyone read the J Michael Straczynski Spiderman run? I heard it was a good place to start with Spider-Man comics, but im not sure whether i should buy the omnibus or not |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.20.19 | Ya saga is better than y the last man. Pay attention to Image comics, they are the best publisher. But transmeteo, preacher, and sandman are good picks to check next |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
09.20.19 | Some other favourites: east of west, low, deadly class, Tokyo ghost, the wicked and the divine, pretty deadly, annihilator |
Uzumaki
09.20.19 | I was just about to suggest East of West; nice to see someone else like that comic. You can also check: Atomic Robo, The Manhattan Projects, Lady Mechanika, The Stuff Of Legend, 20th Century Boys and Ikigami. |
rabidfish
09.20.19 | Dorohedoro.
|
samwise2000
09.20.19 | @Uzumaki Ive read most of Naoki Urasawas stuff, guy is a genius of the medium
Ive heard good things about Jonathan Hickman, so ill definitely give East of West a look! The stylized art looks gorgeous from what ive seen on google, so thats an added bonus |
Uzumaki
09.20.19 | It actually has a pretty deep story and everything feels well writ. It's been my go-to comic for the summer for the past two years, just catching up on everything I've missed in the interim.
I did forget you had commented on my conversation avatar, which is from 20th Century Boys lol. |
rabidfish
09.20.19 | And if u looking for comic books I personally recommend the animal man run by jeff lemire. Art is gnarly (at least the first 7 issues) and it elaborates on the AM lore/universe in a pretty cool way. I dunno if i'd watch it as a show, tho, but as a comic it was really entertaining. |
