05.11.20 | Damn I am woefully behind on this year, may have to use this as a guide (: |

Hope it's a good guide, then! I don't think you can really miss on the top 5-8 or so, if there's any you haven't listened to.
"Truly the Manneken Pis of hip-hop"
I'm about as well-versed in hip-hop as I am running for president, so if it's not the masterpiece that I claim then please be sure to forgive my ignorance! It was a big deal in 2010 if I recall but time could have changed that. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.11.20 | Lol it doesn't matter I'm just taking the piss, just like the statue
Still crazy that Cosmo ended up that high for you |
Sowing
05.11.20 | Yeah I got into Cosmogramma in 2017, I didn't even have much of an interest in electronic stuff until 2016. I think the jazz influences are what won me over in the beginning, but now I love the whole thing. My original Top-25 for 2010 didn't even have FlyLo on it at all. |
Egarran
05.11.20 | As expected I feel old now.
Also
Alcest - Écailles De Lune
Ghost - Opus Eponymous
Sparklehorse/Danger Mouse - Dark Night of the Soul |
anat
05.11.20 | Would have expected you to include Age of Adz
2010 is a pretty sparse year for me but I'd add:
Future Islands - In Evening Air
Gold Panda - Lucky Shiner
Lone Wolf - The Devil and I |
Sowing
05.11.20 | Not a huge Age of Adz guy. In fact, the only Sufjan work I'm crazy about is Carrie & Lowell. Age of Adz is a 3.5, but only because Impossible Soul is one of the greatest songs ever. |
ArsMoriendi
05.11.20 | I get how Taylor Swift is big with people who like top 40 pop, but I don't get how she's so popular among indie fans on Sputnik |
Sowing
05.11.20 | She's arguably the biggest pop icon in history, so it makes sense to me. |
neekafat
05.11.20 | I honestly wasn't big on 6 but I def need to check those Dillinger and Circa records! |
neekafat
05.11.20 | I much prefer Age of Adz to Carrie and Lowell tbh :/ |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.11.20 | id probably take the spa music alb over carrie and lowell even |
ArsMoriendi
05.11.20 | "She's arguably the biggest pop icon in history, so it makes sense to me."
Michael Jackson???????? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.11.20 | "She's arguably the biggest pop icon in history"
bruh that is utter nonsense. sheer rubbish. |
Sowing
05.11.20 | I thought she was the highest selling pop artist of all time??? I could easily be mistaken... |
Sowing
05.11.20 | Ah nvm I think that was highest digital sales my bad everyone! |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.12.20 | even if sales is the strict metric a quick google has her outclassed by the beatles, MJ, elvis, elton john, madonna, led zep, and even rihanna (surprising tbh) |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.12.20 | nvm u sniped me
|
botulist
05.12.20 | by that logic, the new triple scrub Swifter broom is the biggest pop icon in history |
ArsMoriendi
05.12.20 | The highest-selling overall is The Beatles (they also have the most #1 singles of any artist)
Michael Jackson is #3 for the highest-selling (Also, Michael Jackson's Thriller is the best selling album of all time)
Taylor Swift is #10 for the highest-selling (but Rihanna is #7, and she's still relevant so even if you only counted current artists Rihanna still tops her)
EDIT: didn't see Sowing's digital sales comment
|
Sowing
05.12.20 | When talking about pop my mind automatically goes to sales, but yeah, even if she's not the biggest icon she's still pretty huge. Big enough that it doesn't seem strange that she has a following here. This site isn't strictly the metal/indie niche that it used to be! |
botulist
05.12.20 | yea, move over, beardos! It’s guys who like reading a teenager’s diaries time!! |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.12.20 | yeah i don't think it's that weird either, sput loves its cute white female pop stars |
ArsMoriendi
05.12.20 | "sput loves its cute white female pop stars"
I guess that answers my next question, which was "if Rihanna is a better seller than Swift in the pop world, why isn't she big here?"
:| |
Sowing
05.12.20 | I like Disturbia-era Rihanna but she fell off hard in the 2010s for me. |
neekafat
05.12.20 | ANTI rules tho |
Sowing
05.12.20 | I think that might be the one I haven't heard. I gave up after the two that came before it. Why is it so much better, a style change? A return to writing actual bops? |

05.12.20 | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgl8dni9YFo
this is why i like rihanna |
Sinternet
05.12.20 | rihanna is a fucking icon and sput and the internet in general needs to retcon her into the GOATs |
ArsMoriendi
05.12.20 | I mean she's better than Taylor, by like a light year, but do I LIKE her music? nah
If I liked Modern top 40 pop, I'd sooner like her stuff though probably |
Sinternet
05.12.20 | you mean if you quit being a dweeb
which would be lovely |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.12.20 | hmm very fair point |
ArsMoriendi
05.12.20 | Sint, you legit rec'd me Deadmau5 and said he was one of the best electronic artists ever, who are you calling a dweeb?
Honestly Taylor Swift is kinda terrible. Her hits range from "I'm glad I broke up with my rich famous boyfriend, and how it made me stronger" to "why does the media have it out for me? I guess they're just jealous" |
Sinternet
05.12.20 | when has that ever happened lol
|
ArsMoriendi
05.12.20 | "when has that ever happened lol"
Your rec: November 10th, 2018 on my Umbrella contest: electronic round (where you could pick any electronic song ever) you rec'd Deadmau5's song “Strobe”
When you said he was one of the best: sometime soon after that when I eliminated you from the competition for picking the worst electronic song for that round |
StarlessCore
05.12.20 | 19 is the best |
ThyCrossAwaits
05.12.20 | Probably the most important year in the development of what music I like to this day, 6 and 1 are two of my favorite all-time records |
JohnnyoftheWell
05.12.20 | Need to clear up that Killing Joke alb and a few of their others, nice |
Itwasthatwas
05.12.20 | I like 14 better than all the stuff that came later. To the point and not bloated, unlike the Seer which feels like Gira pulled half of it out of his ass to fill the runtime. Jim is one of the best Swans tracks |
Itwasthatwas
05.12.20 | Cosmo is a weird album for me. It’s amazing, I love it, I’ve been jamming it for 10 years now, but it’s one of like 15 electronic albums I listen to so I have no idea how to rate it |
Sinternet
05.12.20 | me picking one song as a throwaway rec in your dumb contest where you with no taste other than that of someone you avoid in a bar because he's the weird guy who smells off and has the personality of the blanket a dog pisses itself on when it hears fireworks, and commenting once on the list after you didn't like it that it was a 'gay rating' is definitely what you just said |
ArsMoriendi
05.12.20 | Wow that insult is so oddly specific
I must've really pissed you off, sorry man, hope you get over it |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.12.20 | @itwasthatwas rate it a 5 |
Tyler.
05.12.20 | now THIS is music |

05.12.20 | "Why is it so much better, a style change? A return to writing actual bops?"
It's very varied stylistically. I'm not super into the hits but the back-half and "Desperado" are just excellent pop. Her Tame Impala cover is legendary |

05.12.20 | only properly got into angels & airwaves last year, and i think they're great. i always credited tom as the strongest member of blink, but the fact he operates on where his creativity goes and not the money has me admiring his efforts more.
great list.
agreed

05.13.20 | "There's a complexity to the rhythms that makes it feel more structured and accessible"
This doesn't make sense.
"I cannot deny that this is a masterwork of nu-metal."
Neither does this. Otherwise, good stuff. |
Egarran
05.13.20 | I thought it made sense, but maybe I misunderstood it. |
Emim
05.13.20 | Seems to me that more complexity would lead to less accessibility. |
Egarran
05.13.20 | You imply a more that maybe isn't there. |
Emim
05.13.20 | I guess I assume complexity and accessibility have more of an inverse relationship. |
