08.07.20 | Part 5 of my daily rankings; I am fully prepared to get shit for this but I speak truth brothers. If I should revisit these films again for a better understanding, please tell me why in the comments. |
dedex
08.07.20 | waaaaa Evil Dead II at 3?!
never watched the remake, prob should |
JeremiahBullfrog
08.07.20 | don't go looking for any silliness cause you won't get it, just str8 up horror m8 |
SteakByrnes
08.07.20 | Army of Darkness is certainly not supposed to be taken that seriously, it's just a goofy fun movie lol
I'd probably go Evil Dead OG > Evil Dead 2 > Army of Darkness > Evil Dead 2013
I like them all tho |
DrGonzo1937
08.07.20 | Remake is great, but 2 & 3 any day of the goddamn week |
JeremiahBullfrog
08.07.20 | sacrilegious Steak wtf |
JeremiahBullfrog
08.07.20 | yess Gonzo |
Gyromania
08.07.20 | yeah evil dead 2 obviously isn't the third best in the franchise lol |
Gyromania
08.07.20 | remake is decent but it's honestly torture porn compared to the original which still retained some silliness. |
DrGonzo1937
08.07.20 | It’s just the last quarter that lets the remake down. I honestly loved the oppressive vibe with it; it brought a different spin on it all |
SteakByrnes
08.07.20 | Sir what is so sacrilegious |
JeremiahBullfrog
08.07.20 | Steak - Placing Remake Dead last, such a good film.
Gonzo - what didn't you like about the end? |
Gyromania
08.07.20 | idk i think the remake takes itself way too seriously and is a bit of a bummer to sit through. can only watch so much body horror shit. comes across as gratuitous for the sake of it. the original balances it out nicely with some comedic moments. probably dead last ngl. i'm with you tho that army of darkness is a bit too silly and hard to get into as much as the others |
DrGonzo1937
08.07.20 | @Jeremiah
Everything after the revival scene feels like complete studio meddling — tacky fan service that undermines what was originally laid out. |
butt.
08.07.20 | Evil dead 2013 number one? Gtffffffooooo. The rest are accurate tho
And yeah you must have no sense of humor, army of darkness is pretty great |
JeremiahBullfrog
08.07.20 | Y'all crazy, The Satanic backdrop and atmosphere in 2013 is crazy, best modern horror no doubt and best ever "remake" for sure |
Gyromania
08.07.20 | best modern horror? LOL |
porcupinetheater
08.07.20 | Wow you're going to try to pull that card on Evil Dead II with your list lookin' like this? |
BlushfulHippocrene
08.07.20 | I remember hating 2013 at first, but then it started, like, literally raining blood and I was sold. Yes, though, Evil Dead 2 >>>>. |
JeremiahBullfrog
08.07.20 | well i knew it would be a controversial ranking but im sticking with it. The originals suck. |
porcupinetheater
08.07.20 | Jesus Christ there's no hope for you |
JeremiahBullfrog
08.07.20 | so i ask, good sirs (and potential maams) why should i go and watch these? What should I be looking out for? (legit question) |
SteakByrnes
08.07.20 | The originals don't suck lol, and no way is the remake the best modern horror that's just crazy talk |
TheNotrap
08.07.20 | Gotta love Ashy Slashy |
JeremiahBullfrog
08.07.20 | Do you know what I llove Horror films, loved them all my life, but I just don't "get" Evil Dead and I think that's just it for me. |
JeremiahBullfrog
08.07.20 | and I think that's my gripe with it, because I dont get it and I can't put my finger on why. Just too silly. |
DarkSideOfLucca
08.07.20 | The remake above the original trilogy? Oh...oh God no.
It was really fucking fun, but it had like 0% of the charisma that the original had. It had some solid atmosphere, but literally nothing compared to #1, nor was it fun enough to compete with 2 and 3.
Also the characters were soooooo much more uninteresting and not in a cheesy fun way like some of the side characters in the OG trilogy.
Nah, man. I respect most opinions, but this ain't it, my dude. |
TheNotrap
08.07.20 | I like its cliché B movie approach and the main character is one of a kind |
DarkSideOfLucca
08.07.20 | Also just the Christian mythology and Exorcist rip off scenes were a little off putting. How Mia just goes back to normal at the end, the weird relationship between the siblings that is just awkward, some forced call backs, etc
Nah the more I think about this the more I vehemently disagree lol
OG trilogy are some of the best movies in the entire genre. |
porcupinetheater
08.07.20 | First two are some of the most inventive horror filmmaking, period. And II especially took the manic, disconcertingly goofy technical work from the first one and matched it with a perfect tone. Keep coming back to that scene where all the inanimate objects start laughing with Ash, like, it's goofy on one level, but mixed with the hyper Dutch angles, zooms, and frantic cutting - it also touches on something uncomfortable.
Most horror comedy approaches them as two separate things, but II has the comedy inform the horror and vice-versa, and in a way that no one's been able to recapture since. |
Trebor.
08.07.20 | Remake is very OK. Army of Darkness is a hard 9/10 |
Trebor.
08.07.20 | "best modern horror no doubt"
bro
what |
Divaman
08.07.20 | And here were, all agreeing lately. But not on this one. I'd have to go 3, 2, 1, 4, and even Army of Darkness was great. I do agree that 1 was one of the better remakes out there, but it's still a remake. |
alamo
08.07.20 | thats why i dont trust frogs |
DrGonzo1937
08.07.20 | Can we also talk about how great the tv show was as well |
ReturnToRock
08.07.20 | Haven't watched the remake. Was advised not to bother.
Otherwise:
1. Army of Darkness
2. The Evil Dead
3. Evil Dead II |
Trebor.
08.07.20 | The remake would probably be more respected if it was an original film. The link to Evil Dead is very shoehorned in |
naughtcturnal
08.07.20 | The "remake" rules |
DrGonzo1937
08.07.20 | @trebor
Exactly |
DrGonzo1937
08.07.20 | If I recall, the director had much more ambitious ideas for it but Sam and Bruce got involved, shoehorned a lot of tacky references |
budgie
08.07.20 | 1. the evil dead
2. evil dead 2
3. evil dead
4. army of darkness
all are at least 4/5 though and the evil dead is a stone cold 5/5 |
budgie
08.07.20 | any ranking of the evil dead films is solid and people bagging on you for liking the 2013 film the most are fake horror fans |
Divaman
08.07.20 | The remake has a very different feel to it. It's certainly a solid horror film (which already puts it miles ahead of most remakes), but it has a whole different feel to Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness. |
budgie
08.07.20 | it's a strength, diva, i imagine if the evil dead series was rebooted in 2013 and tried to capture that early 80s cheese horror charm it would have been a ridiculous disaster and stain on the evil dead name. instead it went just for this humorless, sober vibe, and it worked, its probably the best reboot of any horror series (maybe scream 4 is better), and it is one of the stronger productions in the 2010s decade |
SymbolicInTime
08.07.20 | Remake at #1 lol that movie just isn't what I want from the series, but obviously alright from a straight-up horror perspective
The cheesy corniness is what makes this series imo. Love how they expanded on it in Ash VS Evil Dead, too.
2 > AoD=TV show > 1 > remake |
Divaman
08.07.20 | Yeah. I'm not hating on it, budgie. I'm just not as enthused about it. The first two were strikingly original in their time. The remake is good, and it probably is one of the better horror films of the 2010s. It just doesn't have anywhere near the same level of originality for me. |
porcupinetheater
08.07.20 | Remake's a competently by-the-numbers. If it wasn't attached to Evil Dead it would be an "Oh right, yeah, that exists. It was pretty cool," sort of movie to everyone except the gorehounds that directly associate quality with gallons of fake blood dumped on the props and costuming departments. It's fine.
Not trying to recreate the camp of the originals is all well and good, but it didn't replace it with all that much. |
