09.19.20 | Jon Hopkins, Boards of Canada, is a good starting point. |

09.20.20 | I've been curious about electronica too.
What are differences between all of the subgenres? Like what is the difference between electronica, house, breaks, techno, drum and bass, etc? |

09.20.20 | Good lord, thanks so much all! I've compiled selected tracks from most of your recs in the following playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0RjAW4BV4iIgoTFoAHXC4j?si=QLjuFW1KQ_ilo5GJgTsjKA
Johnny's recs are so thoughtfully organized that I'll be diving into those one album at a time.
Looks like I've got a treat ahead of me - I've been listening to various strains of metal, jazz, and dream pop almost exclusively for the past dozen years or so (currently 24), so exploring a new genre is a whole new experience for me. |

09.20.20 | @Sonoma: I was afraid to ask your question, but it's a good one.
As I've stated a couple times in this list/as is apparent from my reviews, other lists, and wheel, I've primarily been a metal listener for much of my life. What comes with that territory is an engrained respect and appreciation for genres and categorization, but I hesitate to approach electronic music from that lens because I'm all too aware of how aligning your music listening habits strictly within subgenres can be dangerous in that it can severely limit your artistic exploration.
I'm trying to become more open-minded to genres of music I haven't approached in the past, and part of this new mindset means I want to divorce myself from the rigid "everything must fit within the lines of its subgenre" mindset that I straight up espoused for many years as a metalhead. |
JohnnyoftheWell
09.20.20 | Kudos to you dude. Unless you actively seek out certain styles, I'd say it's much easier to get lost in electronic without paying mind to subgenres than it is with metal |
