bgillesp
03.01.21 | I already know these 3 and enjoy them quite a lot. Arrival was my AOTY from 2019 |
bgillesp
03.01.21 | 1 is super wild too |
Sunnyvale
03.01.21 | Gonna have to check both of these, look very interesting |
porcupinetheater
03.01.21 | Ahh missed this going up in all the kerfuffle, yes!!! So excited for some contemptinental jazzery j/ |
porcupinetheater
03.01.21 | Sup Sach got any rec's? |
porcupinetheater
03.01.21 | I mean in a lot of its contemporary audience yeah, and the elitist four-years of music school sector, but jazz has its fair share of radical partisans.
Unless your case is that musical fluency is inherently elitist |
Colton
03.01.21 | is it just me or is the format/layout of this page different than usual for a list |
Colton
03.01.21 | oh it's probably cause of that link in #3. it kinda looks good |
Colton
03.01.21 | the comments are nice and centered instead of offset to the right |
porcupinetheater
03.01.21 | Pretty interesting case tbh, and kind of hard to parse my feelings on it with an instinctive reaction to really digging the sounds, but as far as brass instruments (and double bass, and drum kits, and piano, and...) (especially with certain traditionalists trying to play off alternative instrumental set-ups as a "betrayal" to the style or whatever), but I still think that a musical predisposition is part of being alive in a lot of ways, and making those instruments inaccessible is a condemnation of the capitalist modes of manufacture, but not inherently of the people that choose to play them.
Instrumental proficiency is tougher, though. Like, especially in a free jazz context, where breaking the norms of traditionalism and making a radical statement also makes it more inaccesible, but playing traditional forms makes it more palatable to a more conservative audience so idk
Politicizing music is important, but I'm not sure the conclusions are all that uniform |
porcupinetheater
03.01.21 | Especially when noisecore might be a statement of an extremely working class ethos, but it isn't necessarily being incorporated as a unifier of left activists either for being inaccessible in its own right (not to play, but as far as potential audience reach) |
porcupinetheater
03.01.21 | Fair play, protest in general needs to shift more radically. Would say working towards a universal coherency/strength in numbers is the best hope, but to what extent that's a pipe dream and ought to be surrendered to more immediate action is tough to navigate. Balance between the futility of totally universial collective action and the limited efficacy of individual movement towards the same end.
Don't have any great solutions, really |
bgillesp
03.02.21 | Now I wish I knew what you and Sach were discussing |
porcupinetheater
03.02.21 | Oh baby I took some screenshots, because I think Sach was making very good points, and I think he does a lot. I'll come back with a couple imgur links in a minute, but I think Sach is a smart guy who is confrontational if you don't come at his radical politic as a mutual starting line, and I do agree with that |
porcupinetheater
03.02.21 | https://imgur.com/a/o0K88F0
https://imgur.com/a/nGnW5wl |
porcupinetheater
03.02.21 | I think we have some different conclusions, but I agree in principle with where Sach is coming from |
GhandhiLion
03.02.21 | jotwplskys very subtle |
hal1ax
03.02.21 | hmm
1) music fluency is definitely not inherently elitist
2) i know plenty of working class ppl who have owned or rented brass / woodwind instruments
3) i agree with 3 mostly lol |
hal1ax
03.02.21 | ^pertaining to the imgur link, not this list |
hal1ax
03.02.21 | i also agree with the claim about noise. it's almost impervious to de-radicalization lol. it's too inscrutable even to be subsumed under the culture industry as some kind of defanged expression of 'antagonism' |
porcupinetheater
03.02.21 | Yeah, I'm not on board with the musical fluency argument, but I can see where it comes from if you're approaching value judgements by a metric of universal accessibility/without barrier of entry, but unilateral statements like proficiency = elitism disregards alternative approaches to the social role of music (or assigns its entire value to "something that is played" over "something that is heard"), even if you do subscribe that there's an inherent political responsibility to art
It's a really interesting subject |
porcupinetheater
03.02.21 | oh wow I just got the profile name jotwplsdontily |
hal1ax
03.02.21 | yea i see what you mean. although i guess it depends on how we define fluency. if by fluent we mean institutionally trained and cognizant of theory or whatever, then yea i agree it's inherently elitist. but if fluency means proficient understanding and capacity for musical expression then obv i disagree |
GhandhiLion
03.02.21 | 3) is wrong too :( |
hal1ax
03.02.21 | ya tbh idk enough about contemporary jazz artists to fully commit to 3. |
porcupinetheater
03.02.21 | Yeah, it's definitely not a universal thing (what is?) but there's some truth to the cliche (there's definitely a decent amount of that mindset swishing around music programs). Although you could say that about a lot of styles lol |
porcupinetheater
03.02.21 | I think Sach intentionally hyperbolizes his points to get 'em through quick and make a confrontation, and, like, can't blame him. He's probably got usually about 20-30 minutes before he catches a ban so might as well come out of the gate firing |
hal1ax
03.02.21 | ye good point |
dedex
03.02.21 | wow smart talk here didn't expect that
don't really agree with sach but I can see where he's coming from |
rellik009
03.02.21 | dammit i missed an opportunity to greet sach
interesting debate btw |
Pheromone
03.02.21 | I am excite!

Demon of the Fall
03.02.21 | So what’s this? I’ve been peeping jazz recently.
That ‘Fire! Orchestra‘ album is, well... FIRE! |
dedex
03.02.21 | It's a cool yazz series! Basically each week a designated user recs two albums, and the others listen and then swoon in superbolic admiration
it's rad |
Pheromone
03.02.21 | sput series save my week(every?)day blues
now, if only i can lose the procastination preventing me from completing SOTM |
Demon of the Fall
03.02.21 | Sound good dedex, I’ll periodically hang out in these lists to improve my knowledge. Unfortunately I have very little of my own wisdom to impart. |
GhandhiLion
03.02.21 | Here is some promising 2021 jazz, album is out on the 5th:

dedex
03.02.21 | oi nice, thx Ghandhi |
Pangea
03.02.21 | 1 is pretty cool but i'm a bit on the fence with the structering of it. It's maybe a little too frantic for me. It has awesome moments, but I felt they were often over too soon and i'm not sure if I like the flow either. But, damn, does the album create some awesome atmospheres and instrumental jams. I don't know, I need more listens |
bgillesp
03.02.21 | Thanks Ghandi!
Finally read through the Sach comments. I get why he posted them this week with both artists being newer, though I find it hard to diss jazz as a whole as elitist when looking at its roots which we are bound to do a lot of through this. I totally get that he exaggerates to get through his argument before his short time limit runs out though. |
Sunnyvale
03.02.21 | Just listened to that Niechec album for the first time, really great stuff |
LeddSledd
03.02.21 | yeah that Niechec is some crazy shit |
Pheromone
03.02.21 | I liked it for sure - it was very frantic, as I assume it's definitely intended to be, and my mood did not math it. I will return! |
Trifolium
03.03.21 | I'm going to actually listen to these today, not fake listen like I did on Monday... |
dedex
03.03.21 | yay Ledd and Sunny!
@phero yeah this can get a lil too crazy if one's not in the good mood, hope you'll enjoy it soon!
I'm so disappointed Trif. |
Trifolium
03.03.21 | I know. You should be. I'll make it to to you. |

dedex
03.03.21 | ok then |
Trifolium
03.03.21 | 🍰 & ☕ & ☘💖 !
Also I'm pressing play on 1 right ~NOW! |
Trifolium
03.03.21 | I think we will see comments in this vein a lot this year, but here we go:
I hugely prefer jazz to be acoustic. And although it is OK to have some electronic elements sometimes, it's the acoustic, 50s/60s vibe that makes jazz sound SO GOOD to me. Of course, there are some exceptions (à la Bitches Brew etc., but also Fela and his explorations), but this is usually what I feel. Hence the Evans love, it all becomes so clear now! Especially acoustic bass OMG.
That being said the intro to Mojry was super cool, and the rest of the track was too! The drumming isn't completely my thing either (too rock-y, not enough jazz-y), and those first two tracks were good examples of what I do not really like. There were many moments on this that did appeal to me though! The aforementioned Mojry into Niespokojny Relaks was cool!
Sorry dedex, these are the fex. |
Trifolium
03.03.21 | By the way, the 'don't like electronic' does not apply to mainly electronic music that incorporates jazz (trip hop, hip hop, etc.). That is 💖 big time.
Also Drugi Turnus W Pucku was fun and nicely ominous and reminded me of Ulver in a way (Dead City Centres or the likes). |
Trifolium
03.03.21 | Smierc W Miekkim Futerku was mega cool too. Nicely brooding and mysterious. Turns out it were mainly the first couple of tracks that didn't do it for me. |
Trifolium
03.03.21 | Number 2 gives me huge Cinematic Orchestra (first two records, aka The Good Ones!) vibes, mixed with some modern Dead Can Dance. Lovely sound so far!
/quintuplepost |
dedex
03.03.21 | Well I sure wanted to rec weird shit, so I'm glad there are some challenges to be found within this series! Plus I totally get where you're coming from, I only started to like stuff like that a year ago
"these are the fex" imma use that everytime I spit dem facts |
Demon of the Fall
03.03.21 | Oh no, my Cinematic Orchestra rating for ‘Every Day’ appears to be defective (2.5?)... thought I recognised the name. Should probably revisit! |
Trifolium
03.03.21 | ""these are the fex" imma use that everytime I spit dem facts" 😍
And yes you should Demon! Although I prefer Motion to all of their records, Every Day is amazing too. |
Demon of the Fall
03.03.21 | Decided on Submotion Orchestra instead which also needed a revisit (association is a bitch/blessing - delete as appropriate)...
Okay probably a blessing so far. |
dedex
03.03.21 | Submo's first album is *muah* |
Trifolium
03.03.21 | 2 is doing all sorts of thins, I love it dedex! A dip in the middle (see album thread), but the longer tracks are superb. Silver Trees is amazing!!! |
dedex
03.03.21 | woo woo j/ |
Trifolium
03.03.21 | Lovely stuff, can't wait for next week !!! |

ResidentNihilist
03.03.21 | Ok signed up dedex for hosting one of the weeks |
Pangea
03.05.21 | i'm not sure if i'm completely vibing with 2 but Silver Trees is super good |
Trifolium
03.05.21 | Silver trees is the high point for me as well Pangea. That and the first two tracks if I remember correctly. |
Pangea
03.05.21 | the first two were the ones i didn't really like. I did like the 3rd one although i see in the album thread you were not a fan of that one.
dressed in smoke is pretty cool again |
Trifolium
03.05.21 | Ah cool, so we agree on some and disagree on others.
And indeed I wasn't a fan. But the record overall appealed to me, it was nice and gloomy and very big on the atmosphere. |
dedex
03.05.21 | yeah it's weird shit
love the

Trifolium
03.05.21 | Same! The a mt s OPHERe is so good on

bgillesp
03.06.21 | Darn, I missed the trip hop discussion. If we are associating “Orchestras” though, y’all need to check Hidden Orchestra |
Trifolium
03.06.21 | Ah yeah, another one, and it's not hard to see why we overlooked them...
How are you doing gilles? |
Demon of the Fall
03.06.21 | Hidden Orchestra are indeed good (as I very recently discovered).
P.S. Silver Trees is amazing, that and Blue Crystal Fire are my faves, (been a while since I listened though). |
porcupinetheater
03.07.21 | Fell a bit behind this week, but holy Hell this Niechec record...
Took a track or two to find the footing, but the middle stretch has some bits that actually got me gasping no lie. Just sitting here mouthing “woah” like a nincompoop |
dedex
03.08.21 | "Just sitting here mouthing “woah” like a nincompoop"
that's the reaction I wanted yay j/ |
Pheromone
03.08.21 | dedex dedex is it too late to listen to Niechec today - I haven't got around to it yet

bgillesp
03.09.21 | Is there a new list for this week? |
bgillesp
03.09.21 | Also I’m doing well @Trif, thanks for asking. Back at work now and have been symptom free for over a week |
EyesWideShut
03.09.21 | Damn broski I wish you kept the 3 albums from the prior lists. I forgot what they were. |
bgillesp
03.09.21 | They’re all on the google doc still, but it is a good idea to keep the old albums on each new list |
porcupinetheater
03.09.21 | Yeah, just jump on the google doc, they're all there
(Feel free to sign up for a week o' your own while you're there, if you care to!)
And bgill, Pangea made a beautiful new list for this week!
