| Godzilla Films Ranked: Worst to First
With Godzilla vs Kong right around the corner, I'm gonna rank all the films in my favorite franchise.
I also added every soundtrack in the franchise because I wanted album art that matched the films. | 33 | | Kunio Miyauchi All Monsters Attack!
All Monsters Attack
Fuck this movie.
Grade: Z | 32 | | Masaru Sato Son of Godzilla
Son of Godzilla
Introduced Minilla. Unforgivable.
Grade: F | 31 | | Takayuki Negishi Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters
Anime Trilogy
So much missed potential. Hope Godzilla Singular Point is better than this embarrassing misstep.
Grade: D- | 30 | | Masaru Sato Ebirah: Horror of the Deep
Ebirah Horror of the Deep
A giant Lobster is not an acceptable villain. Also the giant condor scene may be the worst in the entire franchise.
Grade: D- | 29 | | Masaru Sato Godzilla Raids Again
Godzilla Raids Again
The fact this film followed the immortal classic Gojira is dumbfounding. This movie kinda sucks.
Grade: D- | 28 | | Riichiro Manabe Godzilla vs. Megalon
Godzilla vs Megalon
Save for the amazing tail dropkick moment, this movie is barely even a Godzilla film. Dude shows up over halfway through, but by that point your attention is guaranteed to be lost.
Grade: D | 27 | | David Arnold GODZILLA
Godzilla 1998
A guilty pleasure of mine. It was my first Godzilla movie so it will always have a special place in my heart; even if it isn't objectionably good.
Objective Grade: D
Personal Grade: B | 26 | | Takayuki Negishi Godzilla vs Spacegodzilla
Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla
Definitely the weakest film in the Heisei series. This film commits the sin of introducing a mech that is even worse than Mechagodzilla II. SpaceGodzilla is a super cool villain, but the fight scenes with him are admittedly pretty lame.
Grade: D+ | 25 | | Akira Ifukube Godzilla vs Gigan
Godzilla vs Gigan
It’s such a shame Gigan made his debut in this boring ass movie. Monster action is pretty solid, but everything else is a snoozefest.
Grade: D+ | 24 | | Akira Ifukube Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II
Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II
Mechagodzilla’s butt ugly redesign pisses me off to the point where every scene he’s in is almost completely ruined. The soundtrack is super fuckin dope though,
Grade: C- | 23 | | Akira Ifukube Invasion of Astro-Monster
Invasion of the Astro Monster
The poor man’s Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster. Passable but nothing remarkable.
Grade: C- | 22 | | Riichiro Manabe Godzilla vs Hedorah
Godzilla vs Hedorah
This is a REALLY weird one. I like it, but it’s still a little to stupid at points for me to love. I mean, Godzilla fucking flies in this movie.
Grade: C | 21 | | Akira Ifukube Mothra vs Godzilla
Mothra vs. Godzilla
Probably gonna step on some toes here, but I really don’t like Mothra that much. You couldn’t pick a lamer insect to blow up to kaiju proportions. My distaste for Mothra definitely contributes to why this film is so low on the list.
Grade: C | 20 | | Akira Ifukube Godzilla vs Mothra
Mothra vs Godzilla
A marked improvement over the original movie. My biggest gripe comes down to how fucking dreadfully awful Mothra’s design is here. Literally a cotton ball with wings. Battra is pretty dope though.
Grade: C+ | 19 | | Akira Ifukube Godzilla 2000: Millennium
Godzilla 2000
This film was pretty much only made to counter the negative reception the 98 movie had garnered from fans. While it isn’t a homerun, it is still a solid kaiju film with a dope final enemy.
Grade: C+ | 18 | | Akira Ifukube Destroy All Monsters
Destroy All Monsters
The final battle between the earth monsters vs Ghidorah is worth the price of admission, but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a tad bit too slow paced for most people.
Grade: C+ | 17 | | Akira Ifukube Terror of Mechagodzilla
Terror of Mechagodzilla
A damn good direct sequel of GvMG, but not quite as good. This is partially due to how fucking annoying Titanosaurus’ roar is. Shit gets grating really fast.
Grade: B- | 16 | | Kouichi Kawakita Godzilla vs Biollante
Godzilla vs Biollante
Solid followup to G84, but doesn’t quite match the suspense it’s predecessor. This movie definitely has some pacing issues, but is still home to one of the coolest kaiju in the entire franchise.
Grade: B- | 15 | | Michiru Oshima Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla
Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla
While it’s sequel is minorly superior, this is still a damn good Godzilla movie. Having the spirit of the first Godzilla possess the mechanical doppelganger is simply genius. Another thing about this movie and it’s sequel that is a plus is just how strong the human characters are.
Grade: B | 14 | | Michiru Oshima Godzilla: Tokyo SOS
Godzilla Tokyo SOS
The Kiryu duology is meant to be seen as a cohesive whole, but individually, I’ve gotta give the nod to this one. Has easily the best special effects and miniatures of any Godzilla film. Highly recommended.
Grade: B | 13 | | Akira Ifukube Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster
Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster
The film that created the ensemble monster brawls that would thankfully remain a recurring theme in the franchise. Super important and a one of the best films in the Showa series.
Grade: B | 12 | | Alexandre Desplat Godzilla
Godzilla 2014
This one will always be special to me. I’ve been a Godzilla fan since the age of 6, and it always killed me that I could never see my childhood icon on the big screen. Being able to see an actual Godzilla movie in the theater is an experience I will never forget.
Grade: B | 11 | | Akira Ifukube Godzilla vs King Ghidorah
Godzilla vs King Ghidorah
This movie’s got it all: fantastic action, time travel, vengeful aliens, cyborgs and the one and only appearance of the coolest mech of the franchise, Mecha-King Ghidorah.
Grade: B | 10 | | Michiru Oshima Godzilla vs Megaguirus
Godzilla vs Megaguirus
I will never understand why people consider this one of the worst in the franchise. The new monster, the multi-staged insectoid Megaguirus is pretty fucking cool and very different from previous Godzilla kaiju. The first time we see the creature, it kills a young couple in a very slasher movie way, which is pretty original for a Godzilla film. This film has a ton of great ideas; and while they aren’t flawlessly executed, the film is still very fun and interesting.
Grade: B | 9 | | Bear McCreary Godzilla: King of the Monsters
Godzilla: King of the Monsters
While I enjoyed the 2014 Godzilla film, this movie delivered more of what I wanted from a Godzilla film. This movie wastes no time fucking around, and instead drops you directly into the action. The monster fights are super fun to watch, the kaijus’ redesigns are dope, and the soundtrack is one of the best in the entire series. My only major complaint is that the human characters are a little one-note and forgettable.
Grade: B | 8 | | Akira Ifukube King Kong vs Godzilla
King Kong vs Godzilla
Pitting the two most popular giant monsters together in a battle to the death is such an awesome concept, and Godzilla vs King Kong pulls it off in a very satisfying way. While it does take a long time for the two monsters to start fighting, the rest of the film does pack an entertaining punch. If you want some dumb fun, this is a great choice.
Grade: B+ | 7 | | Masaru Sato Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla
Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla
Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla is definitely a step in the right direction, relying less on silly gags and ridiculous kaiju battles. For the first time in a while Godzilla is given a genuinely threatening villain, which would go on to become one of the most popular kaiju ever. There may be a couple silly moments to laugh at, but the overall package is solid.
Grade: B+ | 6 | | Reijiro Koroku The Return of Godzilla
The Return of Godzilla
For Godzilla not having any kaiju to face, this film is surprisingly entertaining. The movie does a good job making Godzilla scary again, and the darker tone is a welcomed change of pace from the light hearted films of the 60s and 70s.
Grade: B+ | 5 | | Akira Ifukube Godzilla vs Destoroyah
Godzilla vs Destoroyah
Probably the only film in the Heisei series that I can say I’m truly a fan of. The film has a surprising amount of emotional weight, and Destoroyah is easily on the coolest kaijus in the entire franchise. Godzilla’s death will never fail to make me tear up, and is probably the most impactful moment in the entire franchise. A fantastic way to end an otherwise lackluster series.
Grade: A- | 4 | | Keith Emerson Godzilla: Final Wars
Godzilla Final Wars
This movie is absolutely fucking nuts. Definitely the most action packed film in the series; offering us martial art fights, motorcycle chases, extraterrestrial dogfights, and enough monster action for 3 movies. It takes a little bit to get started, but once it does, it never lets up once.
Grade: A | 3 | | Akira Ifukube Gojira
Gojira
The original is widely regarded as the best in the series, and it isn’t hard to see why. It’s hard to deny the influence this film had on monster movies, and stands as one of the finest creature features of all time.
Grade: A | 2 | | Shiro Sagisu Shin Godzilla Official Soundtrack
Shin Godzilla
The thing I love about Shin Godzilla is just how different it is to the rest of the films in the series. Godzilla films have always been fantastical, and comfortably fits within the science fiction genre and never really shoots for a realistic approach. But with Shin Godzilla, we finally get to see how a Godzilla attack would be handled in the real world. I acknowledge this approach isn’t everyone's cup of tea, and could be perceived as bland or uninteresting. For me however, this was a great unique approach that helps it stand apart from the rest of the films in the series.
Grade: A | 1 | | Kow Otani GMK: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack
Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack
The perfect combination of everything you want out of a Godzilla film. Fun action scenes, interesting story, great practical effects, glorious destruction and a superb soundtrack. In addition, this film goes the extra mile and gives us the best human characters in the entire franchise.

03.22.21 | #1 is Gojira - From Mars to Sirius
I hate Mothra
| rockarollacola
03.22.21 | Mothra is so fucking lame. Never understood the appeal. The only rendition of Mothra I actually find cool is her appearance in GMK. | EoinCofa
03.22.21 | ^agreed | CaliggyJack
03.22.21 | Fukuda is rolling over in his grave at this list LMAO
Nice list though, it really makes me want to make my own Godzilla list cuz there are some I agree with and some I don't (Biollante too low my man) Final Wars is tremendous and So is Shin Gojira
Also, SpaceGodzilla is Heisei Era not Showa | rockarollacola
03.22.21 | I can't believe I said GvSG was in the Showa era. That's embarrasing. | JeetJeet
03.22.21 | "Mothra is so fucking lame"
I thought I was the only one who thought Mothra sucked lol | JeetJeet
03.22.21 | Also who's ready to see Kong get his bitchass whooped in 4k? | CaliggyJack
03.22.21 | Me | rockarollacola
03.22.21 | Wouldn't miss it | CaliggyJack
03.22.21 | Though I get the sinking feeling they're gonna have Kong win cuz it's an American production. | rockarollacola
03.22.21 | I don't think the studio would allow that. Could you imagine the outrage from the Godzilla fandom? | Sharenge
03.22.21 | I feel like getting through every Godzilla film as an adult has got to be one of the greatest and most torturous challenges in cinema, probably just below getting through every film in the MCU | Shuyin
03.22.21 | I fucking LOVE Godzilla!! OG movie will always be my favourite with Shin as a close second. Final Wars is peak ham Godzilla movies, followed by GMK and Godzilla against Mecha Godzilla, some of the Showa movies are awesome to watch with some friends, trust me, you wanna have some beers and go JET JAGGAAAAA with your bros hahahha
The Heisei Mothra trilogy can be pretty lame but the final movie with Desghidorah or whatever it was called, is actually pretty cool.
As for American versions, the best to me is 2014. 98 was FUN but also terrible at being a Godzilla movie. The more recent film was so godawfull I checked out halfway through, and I was hyped AF after seeing the trailers | DadKungFu
03.22.21 | I remember thinking 7 was the coolest thing ever as a kid | Uzumaki
03.22.21 | ^^^^ fuuuuuck yaaaasssssss. Been a fan since I was 8 and that one was my third Goji movie I ever watched and it’s easily top 5 for me. Didn’t really bother with the anime series tho.
Fuck, am I gonna have to do a Godzilla ranking as well? | Uzumaki
03.22.21 | Also, @rollacola, if you haven’t already, you’ve absolutely gotta check out the heisei Gamera trilogy. Directed by the guy who did GMK, these are actually better than most, if not almost all, the Godzilla series. | rockarollacola
03.22.21 | The Heisei Gamera trilogy is golden. Some of the best giant monster movies ever made. | Zorg
03.22.21 | Mothra sucks, but those singing twins...well I hope they suck too. | Sharenge
03.22.21 | Mothra wrecks face | bloc
03.22.21 | 27 is so freakin underrated I still can't believe it. It has everything you want in an adventure movie imo | Shemson
03.22.21 | Best American adaptation was Mecha Barbura Streisand let’s face it, Robert Smith kicks ass | CaliggyJack
03.22.21 | "I don't think the studio would allow that. Could you imagine the outrage from the Godzilla fandom?"
Most of the American public has had Kong etched in history through his tragic story. In most of the American movies, even Skull Island, Kong has always had a humanistic quality that endears him to the audience. And so American studios may feel biased to have Kong prevail in order to maintain his image as an anti-hero underdog. In Japan, Kong is nothing more than a giant gorilla who smashes shit. Hence why that wouldn't be an issue over there.
There is a large Godzilla fanbase in America for sure, but Kong is an American icon ingrained in our DNA from countless adaptations and pop culture showings. No matter how much you try to distance yourself from the past, bias always prevails. | Shuyin
03.22.21 | Didn't the old one end up having two different versions one for the US with Kong winning and the other for Japan in which Godzilla won? IDK, I read about it somewhere..
I like the idea of a versus movie but lets be honest here, Godzillas gonna get a massive nerf lmao | CaliggyJack
03.22.21 | "Didn't the old one end up having two different versions one for the US with Kong winning and the other for Japan in which Godzilla won? IDK, I read about it somewhere.."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Kong_vs._Godzilla#Dual_ending_myth
Basically, in Japanese version, it is a tie with Kong coming out a little better. In the American version, Kong wins hands down.
"I like the idea of a versus movie but lets be honest here, Godzillas gonna get a massive nerf lmao"
Pretty much. It could also be seen as within America's general interest to either have Kong win or draw. This might seem far fetched, but I can guarantee you the US government is paying absolute attention to the upcoming movie. Right now patriotism is at an all time low and the studio may have interfered with the direction of the movie so as not to harm what is a delicate situation in the country. We may be small in comparison to China, but we are still a sizeable box office.
Then there is also China's box office which many studios are trying to cash in on right now. They're no fans of us, but they hate Japan even more and the idea of Godzilla prevailing might not sit well with Chinese audiences. To many, Godzilla is a symbol of Japanese Imperialism, and seeing him succeed over Kong might not go over well.
There is a lot more riding on this movie than I think anybody actually realizes. | DadKungFu
03.22.21 | WWIII getting triggered by King Kong vs Godzilla would be so fitting for this timeline | Shuyin
03.22.21 | Hmm you're not wrong. Studios have been cashing in on China for a long time, that's normally where the big bucks come from. Have you seen the differences between the American and Chinese posters of The Forces Awakens? That's messed up.. I wonder if they're gonna puss out and have Goji and Kong teaming up to fight another monster, that would be lame. I wanna see Godzilla win, also he needs to grab a big fucking tree and shove it up Kongs ass | CaliggyJack
03.22.21 | We will see. The safest option would be to have either a tie or for both to team up and fight another monster. Even then though, someone's going to be pissed no matter what outcome happens. | CaliggyJack
03.22.21 | Holy fuck I was proven right, almost.
I'm on twitch and I just saw a quick 10 second trailer for GvK and oh my God they are going all in pro-Kong.
Like all you can hear is dialogue of people saying
"He's coming after Kong."
"We need Kong"
"He's our only hope."
And all the trailer footage is just Kong.
LMAO I fucking called it | Uzumaki
03.22.21 | ‘Murica. | rockarollacola
03.23.21 | Every fucking trailer has "WE NEED KONG. THE WORLD NEEDS HIM", like enough with that fucking line already.
I understand them giving Kong the spotlight considering he's easier to relate with, but I wanna see that monkey get destroyed.
also "Mothra sucks, but those singing twins...well I hope they suck too."
[2] | CaliggyJack
03.23.21 | "Every fucking trailer has "WE NEED KONG. THE WORLD NEEDS HIM", like enough with that fucking line already."
Yeah I get the feeling this movie is gonna be very predictable.. | rockarollacola
03.23.21 | I stumbled upon a leaked screenplay in a forum a few years back, and from what I've seen in the trailers, it's 100% accurate. I'm over spoilers at this point, and just wanna see the fucking movie already. The constant delays this film had crushed my soul for too long. | CaliggyJack
03.23.21 | Yeah even if Kong wins I still think it'll be a great film. They've done fine so far. | rockarollacola
03.23.21 | Even if the film is a total piece of garbage, I'll probably still love it. | Shuyin
03.23.21 | D.. did Kong just block Gojis atomic breath? That's such bullshit! Should've been Kong vs Zilla | TheAntichrist
03.23.21 | kotm 2019 was fucking awful | AnimalsAsSummit
03.23.21 | Love Shin Godzilla. One of my faves. | bloc
03.23.21 | You know Zilla and Kong are gonna team up at the end of the movie to fight some bigger foe and then part their separate ways | Zorg
03.23.21 | I heard a rumor that Kong is going to win but it turns out to be Mechagodzilla | Shuyin
