some jazz (week 8)

some fella from this site takes the helms for the eighth week of jazz of the year of our lord. hither comes an overlooked classic of almost afrojazz, a forgotten classic of slight afrojazz and a modern classic of post-rock-jazz for dessert.
1Alice Coltrane
Ptah, The El Daoud

Alice once again recruits Pharoah Sanders to do her bidding on another spiritual avant-garde journey channelling her innermost afrojazz tendencies. Unfortunately to 'Ptah', 'Journey in Satchidananda' came out right after and took all of the glory. But as similar these albums may seem on the surface, so different they really are. 'Journey' is psychedelic, entropic and euphoric. 'Ptah' is all those things drawn into strange nauseated atmosphere. Any moment the idiosyncratic disorganisation of the music seems to gain shape, the background disassembles and starts tuning out to its own rhythm. Lovely, lovely stuff.

And now for something a little different. Donald Byrd is two realities at different times: a propagator of the same tired bop tradition plaguing many of his contemporaries, mentors and students, and also a forward-thinking jazz influencer (take that term with a grain of poorly aged proverbial salt) who was not afraid of shaping the trends of the scene to come. Heck, he made Herbie Hancock's body of work before Herbie Hancock. Read my review, I guess. And don't be shy to tap along.
