A band everyone loves to hate or hates to love. Tell me where I'm wrong.

Blurryface

A painful regression filled with some of their most obnoxious and overly self-conscious music. It's a shame that this will be remembered as their breakthrough, given that it's sandwiched between two obviously superior records. The songs I do like I have to enjoy despite myself.

Favorite tracks: Ride, The Judge, Not Today

Regional At Best

Some of the best songs here were rerecorded and improved upon with Vessel, which hurts my perception, and the religious lyrical elements are a bit excessive and not as well-integrated as on the self-titled. Not a bad album, but a lacking follow-up to their debut.

Scaled and Icy

Dunno what people were expecting from this. It's clearly a transitional album not meant to serve as a definitive artistic statement in the same vein as something like Trench. In that light, it's a fun but uneven summer pop record.

The Outside, Mulberry Street, Redecorate

The strength of the songwriting and thematic density of the lyrics here floor me. Written and recorded when Tyler Joseph was, what, 20? An extremely impressive debut, even if it needs some minor editing.

The Pantaloon; A Car, A Torch, A Death; Isle of Flightless Birds

Trench

Their most mature and fully realized work, packed with strong songwriting and rich production. I can see why this is the record that even disparagers seem to admit has some value.

Jumpsuit, The Hype, Leave the City

Vessel

I have nostalgia goggles on for sure, but this remains as vibrant and joyful as any pop album I've ever heard.

Ode to Sleep, Holding on to You, The Run and Go
