| The Best Albums Of 2008 You Haven't Heard Yet
You must listen to these before you finalize your lists. | 1 | | Nightly Gale Imprint
My favorite doom record of the year and definitely in my top 5 for 2008. I must say that this is the most well put-together progressive doom metal album I have ever heard. Clear Esoteric influence can be heard throughout the album along with elements of black metal. As if the quality of the instrumentation wasn't enough, the vocal performance is nothing short of godliness. Don't deny yourself the pleasure of listening to this crushing album. | 2 | | Steven Wilson Insurgentes
The frontman of progressive rock behemoth Porcupine Tree shows off his solo talent once again with this amazing mindtrip of an album. A can't miss album that should be on everyone's lists. | 3 | | Lunatic Soul Lunatic Soul
From the frontman of another progressive metal giant, this time Riverside, comes Maruisz Duda's first solo effort. Combining elements of progressive rock, beautiful ambient samples, and world music, Duda creates some of the most diverse sonicscapes I've heard in some time. Another album that must be heard. | 4 | | Hieronymus Bosch Equivoke
I formally challenge anyone and everyone to find a better progressive/technical death metal album released this year. Somehow, the superbly talented band that is Hieronymus Bosch has managed to fly under the radar for their entire career. It's about fucking time they get some well deserved attention. | 5 | | The Drowning This Bleak Descent
I have listened to this 70 minute album nine times within the past three days. This is my second most favorite doom album of the year. I can definitely see rasputin listening to this one. | 6 | | Blindead Autoscopia/Murder in Phazes
Some of the most amazingly depressing, doom-tinged post metal I can remember. Very moody, crisp, and well-produced. For fans of Rosetta, Neurosis, and Minsk. | 7 | | Lacus Somniorum Tideshaper
Amazing dark ambient music inspired by astronomy. This album will bring you across the universe and back. This has surpassed Darkspace III as my favorite ambient album of the year which is truly, for lack of a better word, an astronomical feat. | 8 | | Lunarsea Route Code Selector
My favorite melodic death metal album of the year aside from Twilight of the Thundergod. Think a better, more talented and more melodic version of Soilwork. | 9 | | Celestine At the Borders of Arcadia
What a superbly crafted album. With a combination of sludge and hardcore, Celestine has managed to create one of the most unique post metal albums of the year. A must listen for all post metal fans. | 10 | | Pantheist Journey Through Lands Unknown
Awesome progressive funeral doom metal reminiscent of Esoteric and Skepticism. This is something rasputin would probably recommend. | 11 | | Helios Caesura
The best post rock I've heard this year. Certainly better than the new Mogwai and God Is An Astronaut. Reminds me a lot of Copia. | 12 | | Black Lotus Harvest Of Seasons
Canadian folk/black metal with bits of dark ambient scattered throughout the album. Epic. | 13 | | consecration aux
Extremely trippy, post rock - influenced progressive / doom metal. Hints of Tool, Neurosis, Anathema, GYBE!, Mogwai, Katatonia, and Opeth can be easily heard in this wonderfully dynamic album. | 14 | | Aeon Aethereal Parasite Halls
Blackened melodic death/thrash metal that draws some close comparisons with The Absence but with a little more emphasis on the technical aspects. Good stuff, very headbangable. | 15 | | The Out Circuit Pierce The Empire With A Sound
Why Sputnik isn't going crazy over this is beyond me. What a solid experimental rock gem from Nathan Burke with appearances by Kensrue and Teppei. Everyone that considers themselves fans of Thrice owe it to themselves to check this out. | |

12.01.08 | I poured my heart and soul into assembling this list and adding everything to the db. This is the best of everything unknown I have heard in the past two months or so. This list has been in the works for quite some time. So, I strongly urge you all to check these out. And everything here is no lower than a 4 for me so it's all quality. | handoman

12.01.08 | Ha ha, I got mixed up with Lunarsea and Lahmia. Twin melo death bands from Italy. I accidentally put Lunarsea's picture for Lahmia. Both carry the same stupid pose but I'm pretty confident that Lahmia slays Lunarsea. | PayneTiger777
