| Year of Video Games: Month 6
I've beaten 27 games so far which means I'm perfectly on track for the year! | 1 | | Alkaline Trio Alkaline Trio
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (ps4) - 10/10
This game kicked my ass. I played it over a year and a half span, gave up on it entirely twice, and the final boss alone took me a month. Once I got the hang of shit like that fuckin mikiri counter the middle part of this game was not a big deal for me, but that final boss, yikes. I think this is as good as Dark Souls and Bloodborne. I bought the art book, it’s cool. | 2 | | Mick Gordon Doom Eternal (Original Game Soundtrack)
Dragon Quest 11 (ps4) - 9
Dq11 is a long game. A very long game. A gargantuan unyielding no remorse take over your life kind of game. It got to the point that I was playing this for 6 hours a day. It was not healthy. I didn't do every optional thing and I still ended up with 78 hours on record at the end. This might be a 10/10 game if it was around 45 hours, there's just too much repetition and busy work to justify the length. I would recommend to anyone who wants to play this game to ignore half of the quests, the ones that have poor rewards which it tells you upfront. Also do not waste time grinding. This game is easy. There's no more random encounters except at sea which is amazing, but the absence of them on land makes the ones on sea infuriating. Seriously fuck those random encounters.
This is an old school jrpg at heart but with modern qof sensibilities. That's either your thing or it's not. It's doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it is the best jrpg I've played in over a decade. | 3 | | At the Gates Slaughter of the Soul
Gone Home - 8 (pc)
Gone Home is one of those games where the less you know about it the better so I’m not going to say much here. It’s a walking sim so beware if that’s not your kind of thing. It’s also very short, I beat it in 90 minutes. It’s a mystery type thing where you wander around your childhood home but nobody is around and you’re trying to figure out what happened. I guessed what the ending was going to be about 15 minutes into the game, but that doesn’t really matter, this is a great piece of storytelling that I thoroughly enjoyed. The music in it is great too. | 4 | | Death The Sound of Perseverance
Control - 6.5 (pc)
Control has a lot of ideas, most of which it has cribbed from Prey (2017), Half-Life, The X-Files, House of Leaves, and SCP forums. It’s a bog standard action game disguised as a metroidvania with an interesting story. You get to levitate and shoot dudes and throw debris at people which is cool, but the combat in this game really overstays its welcome. I started to really loathe the game once I got into the combat oriented side quests because it’s just too repetitive. There’s a good amount of backtracking and enemies respawn which doesn’t help. It’s one of those games where I would recommend completely ignoring the combat trial type side quests and the busy work sidequests like “fix 5 things” “kill five dudes” and only do the side quests that have unique content like optional bosses. I was pretty fed up with this game until the ashtray maze part which I don’t want to spoil, but it’s honestly one of the best sequences in a game like this ever. | |
Trebor.
07.03.21 | Why does every modern AAA game have to have busy work sidequests that pads out the runtime? | ghostalgeist
07.03.21 | makes it seem bigger and more grandiose than it actually is | Trebor.
07.03.21 | It's ruined people's brains because whenever a perfectly paced 7 hour game comes out there's tons of people bitching that it's not long enough to justify full price as if time spent playing a game equals quality | ghostalgeist
07.03.21 | agreed, i played infamous second son recently and enjoyed its tight, consistent 6-8 or so hours of great gameplay over whatever the fuck "epics" ubisoft's been pumpin out recently | twlight
07.03.21 | I'm stoked to eventually try sekiro. Couldn't get past an hour in Control, found it very boring.
Currently playing through mass effect legendary edition and it is fantastic. One of the best stories | Trebor.
07.03.21 | I bought the original trilogy on PC like 2 months before they announced legendary edition lol | InFiction
07.04.21 | Sekiro is so damn good. Very hard to master but really rewarding. Still have yet to finish that one. One day! | Trebor.
07.08.21 | Yeah I think it perfectly matches reward with challenge |
