Not a whole lot "new" here, but some of my latest turntable residents. What's everybody else been spinnin' as of late? | 1 | | Cloakroom Dissolution Wave
Very listenable heavy shoegaze right here. Nothing remarkable, admittedly, but my biggest gripe about this record is that I wish it were longer, which is pretty good as far as complaints go. | 2 | | Converge The Poacher Diaries Redux
Snagged this bad boy when I saw them at The Ottobar recently (which, just incredible). This short and sweet beauty (well, subjectively speaking) was well overdue. | 3 | | From Autumn To Ashes The Fiction We Live
Found this record in the bargain bin of my local shop, which, being mildly offended aside, I justified as good a reason as any to belt out a bunch of songs I haven’t thought about in years but apparently learned by heart back in high school. For some reason, don’t remember Francis’s parts having such a strain on my vocal register, which must surely just be a quirk of the remaster… (Also, anybody know what Francis is up to nowadays? Both Biology and Tidal Arms were great, but he seems to have fallen off the map.) | 4 | | Manchester Orchestra I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child
Kinda wild listening to this side-by-side with something like Black Mile or Million Masks, but deservedly still some folks' favorite output from Manny O. Wherever you place it in a discography ranking, it inarguably features some of their best tracks, "I Can Barely Breathe," "Where Have You Been?" and "Sleeper 1972" are all stone-cold, sad-as-shit classics. | 5 | | The Menzingers On the Impossible Past
Another cover-to-cover singalong, much to my partner’s chagrin haha… Just got the Zia Records variant of this bad boy, and yeah, definitely nice to finally have this on vinyl to go along with the Possible Past sister…uh, EP, I guess? (Eight songs feels like a lot for that category.) | 6 | | Spanish Love Songs Brave Faces Etc.
Speaking of companion records, was able to snag a copy of this early when I saw SLS supporting Wonder Years a couple weeks back. An interesting take, kind of an outgrowth of the “lo-fi hip hop remix” comps Pure Noise has done recently. As an album-length experiment, it’s surprisingly solid, though I can’t really say it adds a ton beyond aesthetic difference. Songs like “Kick,” “Beachfront Property,” and “Losers, Pt. 2” really shine, but those were also standouts of the parent record; “Dolores” is probably the biggest departure, for good or for ill. Also, and this is a quibble equally applicable to both versions, but I still feel like there should be another track between “Losers” and “Optimism.” Maybe I just want more Spanish Love Songs. | 7 | | Trentemoller Obverse
Lastly for now, we have another bargain bin acquisition, the artwork’s similarity to Johann Johannsson’s Orphee and, uh, that one Underoath live album is what actually drew my eye, along with the guest spots. Definitely a cool vibing-out-type listen, and has me intrigued enough to start exploring some of the back catalogue, so that’s a job well done, I suppose. | |

03.26.22 | actually spun 2 a couple times this week. also the two 7 inch eps they put out a few years ago. | BAT
03.26.22 | wait converge played ottobar? fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. | thecheatisnotdead
03.26.22 | @Dominion: Nice, yeah, mos def easy to play multiple times, the length really works in its favor there. Ditto those 7"s, I'm assuming you mean Beautiful Ruin and I Can Tell You About Pain, great stuff all around.
@BAT: Aw yeah, but it sold out super-quick (which I guess is to be expected). Pretty awesome to see a band of their stature still visit a smaller club like that. | zakalwe
03.26.22 | Dross | DominionMM1
03.26.22 | yeah it’s ictyap and beautiful ruin. the latter sounds pretty good but the former sounds like shit which sucks because it’s the only way to listen to eve on vinyl. |
