They need to be able to dart around in smaller high-energy bursts, but otherwise have laid-back temperaments on the whole. I love how dopey they are. Affectionate, but can be left alone to sleep for a few hours with no problems. Not big barkers either which is always a bonus, because I hate yappy dogs.

I'm sure any well-behaved / trained dog doesn't stand there yapping like a lunatic - but it seems to be smaller breeds that do it the most often. I think they try and exert their authority in a hierarchical sense, at least when they meet other larger dogs they see as a threat (isn't always the reason).
unclereich 04.21.23	Scent hounds get a bad rap because they have such a singular focus but bloodhounds in particular are smarter than most of their fellow hounds. Basset hounds are pretty hapless

Larger breeds tend to get more training-mostly out of necessity- and therefore are less associated with barking. Small breeds are often treated like babies because they remain small their entire lifespan, this leads to extreme aggression and barking. Picking up and babying dogs is horrible for temperament but the yearning is always there for owners because of their size.

That morning, I had him in the park and he was darting around like a 2-year old dog. He showed no signs of illness whatsoever. My wife came home that evening with dinner from outside. As I set the table and we prepared to sit down to eat, my dog was laying down on his bed which was unusual at dinner time. He was always typically near the dinner table, but not begging. My wife called him over and he wouldn't come until we overly encouraged him. Something was off and he wouldn't go down the stairs to go outside. I picked him up to carry him down the steps and he started defacating all over me as I carried him down. I laid him down on my porch and he peacefully just put his head down. I went to get the car and brought him to the emergency vet clinic because it was now getting late on a Friday night. Upon his checkup, the vet told us that he is literally dying. She said if we were out or so, he wouldn't have made it through the night. When we decided to euthanize, all of his veins were collapsed as she struggled finding one, but finally did. He laid to rest on our laps which was the only way he would choose to go. His name was 'Titan'. One of the hardest days of my life.
