Dire Straits, ranked

Recently, having successfully avoided Dire Straits my entire life after writing them off as a zany, ironic new wave adjacent band due to Money for Nothing, I discovered that they actually FUCKING RIP. What the fuck. How did you all keep this from me. They’re urbane but unpretentious, blending blues, country, jazz and rock, with each song alternating heartfelt yet witty lyrics with tasteful guitar lick after tasteful guitar lick. Knopfler has both a distinctive guitar and vocal style without ever descending into self parody. Seriously, I haven’t felt this way since I discovered Steely Fucking Dan.

Dire Straits

Doesn’t get better than this. Where it all began.
2Dire Straits
Love Over Gold

Dire Straits go prog. The extended jams are sick but it’s kneecapped by the lack of a single standout single.
3Dire Straits
Making Movies

An evolution of their original sound, and their first big step forward, with some killer singles
4Dire Straits
Communiqué

More of the sound from the first album, but when the sound is so good, why change!
5Dire Straits
Brothers in Arms

Yes, Money for Nothing rips, and some other standout singles, but some repetition gets a bit wearying after a while. The cracks were definitely beginning to show here.
6Dire Straits
On Every Street

Honestly underrated. Not as strong as their strongest material but still damn good, and shouldn’t be avoided at all. A understated but consistent return to their earlier, less proggy sound. Calling Elvis, The Bug, and Heavy Fuel fucking rip.
