Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious
One of the best death metal albums ever. Excellent production, one of the most menacing guitar tones ever put to tape, and just all around fun to listen to. Instrumentally outstanding and it's so nice to hear an album with long songs that appreciates unpredicatable song structures. I don't generally like pure death metal drumming, but Ken Owen delivers exactly what I want from the genre, with enough grind and groove influence to keep me happy. 10/10 | | 2 |  | Carcass
Surgical Steel
This goes back and forth with 1 for my favorite. I think this is the best melodeath album Carcass did. Sonically it sits perfectly between Necroticism and Heartwork. Every song rips and the title track, Unfit for Human Consumption, and Mount of Execution are three of the best, if not the best Carcass tracks. If it weren't for Celtic Frost's Monotheist, this would be the best comeback album of all time. 10/10. | | 3 |  | Carcass
Heartwork
Another Carcass album with flawless production and immensely creative sound. A lot of classic tracks here, though the non-essential songs here are not as good as on albums 1 and 2. 9/10. | | 4 |  | Carcass
Symphonies of Sickness
This is probably Carcass at their best atmosphere, and Exhume to Consume is probably their quintessential song (though Ruptured in Purulence is my favorite here). It's a near perfect mix of their early grind and Necroticism's pure death metal. The opening 4 tracks partially spoil the rest of the album for me as the rest of the album doesn't quite reach that strength again, but overall it's a very satisfying progression in Carcass's sound. 8/10 | | 5 |  | Carcass
Swansong
4-5 excellent highlight tracks, quite a few average ones, and a few duds. The reason this was getting shit on at the time of release is not because it was a bad album, but because it's an unsatisfying note for Carcass to leave their career off on. It's a great death n roll album but their catalog feels unfinished looking at this as their final release. It completely deserves the reappraisal it has received in the last few years. 6/10. | | 6 |  | Carcass
Reek of Putrefaction
An album I rarely, if ever, listen to in full but one that earns a lot of respect from me for its total commitment to sounding as disgusting as possible. Hilarious and fun, but would work better in short bursts as a couple EPs than an album. 6/10. | | 7 |  | Carcass
Torn Arteries
I wish I liked this as some people do. It's easily Carcass's most diverse album, but due to the undercooked songwriting that comes across as unfocused a lot of the time. There's a handful of strong tracks here, and no truly bad ones, but the vast majority of it feels like average songs with one or two cool ideas in them. 5/10. | |
