06.07.09 | Hawks, your comments weren't deleted, this is actually a new list. I deleted the other one after it was up for about 2 minutes so I could add Forest of Shadows to the list. Sorry man. But again, thanks for the rec's, I wrote them down and will be checking them out. Also... Hayzte, I love Agalloch in an almost sexual way, but I don't know about The Mantle being doom metal really. Then again, I don't know what else I'd call it... progressive atmospheric folk/death metal...? |

06.07.09 | So far I'm digging Skepticism quite a bit... Moss is almost too low-fi and kvlt sounding for my virgin ears... will give it time. Dolorian sounds good but I only listened to a few portions of tracks so far... about to check out Bethlehem. You guys are ace. Hawks - I can't find your recs among my scraps of paper, what were they again? (I remember Anathema's Serenades but that's it) |
Hawks
06.07.09 | Oh alright I get it lol. But yeah Agalloch isn't really doom. They have elements of it, but they're mostly folk/black metal. |
BallsToTheWall
06.07.09 | Or dark metal. |
Hawks
06.07.09 | Yeah or that. |
mothergoose
06.07.09 | Wow, dark metal. I forgot that was a genre Balls. Sure enough... that's what metal archives calls them... and we all know that they are unquestionable, eternal gods of metal... |

06.07.09 | kinda a mix between death and doom but black sheep wall? |
BallsToTheWall
06.07.09 | The term is kind of like deathcore. Not actually real but a realistic description. generally when folk, doom, black, gothic, ambient are mixed in the pot dark metal comes out. Graveworm, Agalloch, Woods Of Ypres, possibly Moonspell, early Katatonia, Shade Empire, etc. |
mothergoose
06.07.09 | I am not checking all of those bands out... I never cared for Katatonia, maybe I didn't go back far enough. |
mothergoose
06.07.09 | By not, I mean now. I'm typing by moonlight while listening to Fauna. Kinda gives me a who gives a fck where the keys are attitude. |
ThusSpokeZarathustra
06.07.09 | Also:
BEATRIK – Requiem of December (melancholic black/doom)
THERGOTHON – Stream From the Heavens (pioneers but insanely slow and one of the harder doom bands to get into)
And the very earliest Katatonia material was their best IMO (Dance of December Souls).
I didn’t mention it earlier because I had assumed if you’d heard of those other bands you probably had heard about them but are you familiar with My Dying Bride??
|
mothergoose
06.07.09 | I've heard the name My Dying Bride about a hundred times, but I don't think I've ever actually listened to them. As I said, I'm pretty new to the genre. Are they good? (I guess I'll go check reviews...) |
ThusSpokeZarathustra
06.07.09 | Yeah, they’ve had some great releases and then some that I’d say are fairly average.
Definitely check out Turn Loose the Swans and The Angel and the Dark River, two of the most beautiful doom albums in existence IMO. As the Flower Withers, The Light at the End of the World, The Dreadful Hours and Songs of Darkness, Words of Light are all quality too.
