| Top 5 Geek Metal Bands
This is a list of "Geek" metal bands. Not a derogatory term, these bands went beyond the norm, both lyrically and musically, adding their own quirks and interests in metal that other, more straightforward metal bands would not have done. | 5 | | Dethklok The Dethalbum
With most of the album's songs complete versions of the thirty-second or so clips from the TV show, Brendon Small's experiment in parodying metal cliches and adding humor to the mix turned out to be a great success. While the "band" has taken a more serious tone with Dethalbum II, listeners can't forget this band is based on a comedy cartoon created by a guy who looks like a math teacher. | 4 | | Anthrax Among The Living
New York Thrashers Anthrax mixed thrash metal with science fiction and comics with Among The Living. With songs like "Among The Living", "I am the Law", "N.F.L", "and "A Skeleton in the Closet" referencing Stephen King novels, Judge Dredd, and John Belushi, the band would be one of the first metal bands to to focus their songwriting on standard metal themes such as War, Society, and Violence. | 3 | | Swashbuckle Crewed by the Damned
This band lays to rest the ongoing debate of Pirates Vs. Ninjas; At least until some guys create a ninja-themed thrash metal band. Mixing elements of Thrash and Folk to create sea shanties about the life of pirates, this band is pretty damn good. Also, the members of the band dress like pirates. What's not awesome about that? Answer: nothing. | 2 | | HORSE the Band R. Borlax
While not technically a metal band, HORSE the Band were the progenitors of "nintendocore" with their original use of keyboards and gameboy samples to create a "nintendo" electronic sound, even if they had jokingly referred to themselves as such. With songs such as "Cutsman", "The House of Boo", and "Birdo" referencing video games while also subtly focusing on life issues of lead singer Nathan Winneke, they have solidified themselves as a quirky band, though they have focused more on serious songwriting with their latest album. They also made an EP dedicated to Pizza, which I approve. | 1 | | Wormed Planisphaerium
The mathematical symbols comprising Wormed's logo instantly tells the listener he/she is in for ultra brutal, progressive grind death metal. The songs focus on a wide range of scientific themes such as space, human evolution/psychosis, and subatomic particles. The lyrics are just insane, even if they sometimes don't seem to make any sense (How can a volumetric pixel go through mitosis, or become damaged?). This band is just awesome, though it's a shame most of the lyrics come out as ERR ERRR ERRR ERRR because of Phlegeton's frog vocals. | |
