03.30.10 | a. I vote for 2
b. I HAVE to be listening to the album I'm reviewing, preferably with headphones. I like doing it on my computer and my computer only. There's really only 2 places I write... my dorm bed, or my desk at work. I like to do it all at once, if I split it up I end up losing my thoughts. Also, it takes about 25-50 min... really depends on what I'm reviewing. |
Prophet178
03.30.10 | Probably not all that strange but I always loop the album I'm reviewing while I'm writing until I'm done. |
Athom
03.30.10 | for me it really depends on the album/review. mostly i just decide i'm gonna write something and then hop on my computer and 30-60 minutes later I've got something I can post, but there have been times when I've been sitting in class or driving home and i start thinking about an album and a line or two will come to me and i'll write myself a note or something to remember them |
klap
03.30.10 | yeah i thought it went without saying that i listen to the album i'm reviewing while i write lol |
BigHans
03.30.10 | I do it at work. shhhhhhhhhhh.
The process depends on the album. Many of my reviews are of albums I've had for years, that I know inside and out. If that is the case, I listen to it on headphones, and take notes while listneing to it,then just write it.
For newer albums or stuff I'm not as familiar with, I'll usually listen 3 times, take notes, try to come up with what the central theme is, and go for it. Come to think of it, I am always trying to figure out what the central theme of an album is. |
BigTuna
03.30.10 | I've only written one review and it was for an album that I listened to about 20 times at least. I have no idea how people on this site write reviews after about 5 listens. Is there a secret? It's difficult not having a music background/not playing an instrument as well. It seems to limit what I can say. Maybe I'm making that limit up. |

03.30.10 | i've noticed that the best time that my writing shines to its fullest is when i write in my room alone when it is quiet. i haven't written a review in over a year but i have learned a lot about writing during that time like if i want to write a good and through review, i should put as much time in it as possible rather than just jotting down my general feelings about an album and posting it upon sputnik as soon as possible (which is what i used to do). i've been eager to write more reviews for this site but my hands at the moment have already been full.
i'd choose 5 only because i'm interested in anything damon albarn. |
Waior
03.30.10 | My writing has taken place: 60% at my desk, 20% at airports, 10% on my couch and 10% other places (friends basements, Starbucks [a few times], etc.). It helps to be listening to the album if I'm unfamiliar with it, but if I know it well enough, it helps to have complete silence. I use the artist's Wikipedia and usually take around an hour; I write better when it's dark. I also know if I'm writing a 2 paragrapher or a dictionary-vomit-review beforehand so I can plan out structure.
Interesting to see other's habits. |

03.30.10 | I have yet to write a review while drunk. I want to someday. Maybe I'll do a GWAR album or something while wasted and just let it rip. |
klap
03.30.10 | yeah adam occasionally if i'm chilling on my roof or just driving around and think of a good line ill write it down somewhere but that's about the extent of my planning. usually definitely have to alone as well mungo

03.30.10 | writing drunk sounds promising |
Brokenjewel
03.30.10 | I write inbetween the endless academic stuff I have piled up - anytime of day or night really, when I have insomnia I write till it gets light.
For reviews it takes me about an hour to do anything half-decent and I have headphones on throughout, unless it's very busy or heavy then I need quiet. |
BigTuna
03.30.10 | I also have no time to write reviews. I don't know how you assholes find the time. |
klap
03.30.10 | i have a two hour break between classes today as well as no class pretty much every other day before 4. been a pretty lazy semester in general for me though |
Waior
03.30.10 | i'm finishing school a semester or two early so i have been having less and less time to waste writing reviews
which sucks
|
Crysis
03.30.10 | I always write at my desk, and always when I'm alone so there are no distractions. Also, I'm always listening to the album I'm reviewing when I'm writing. It helps finalize my thoughts about the album and helps me point out nuances I may otherwise forget about. Typically it takes me about an hour or so to go through one review, but sometimes it can take much longer than that depending on whether I'm happy with what I've written (I must of edited my In Vain review 5 or 6 times before I was really happy with it). I've tried writing while watching TV or at the airport or at friend's places and it always comes out like shit. |
SeaAnemone
03.30.10 | anybody ever finish writing or in the process of writing and totally change your mind about the album? I've done that a few times... had to start the review over |
klap
03.30.10 | a couple times, then i kept lying to myself so i didn't have to do a re-write :0 |
Foxhound
03.30.10 | I usually write around 12am - 3am for about an hour or so if I want to submit a review. I'm also not sober most of the time too, writings more fun that way. |
BigTuna
03.30.10 | So your free time is spent writing reviews klap? |
klap
03.30.10 | i generally do one review a week, so that's about an hour at most of my approx 40 hours+ of free time |
BigTuna
03.30.10 | That makes much more sense. How many listens do you folks give an album before you review? |
SeaAnemone
03.30.10 | depends. lowest probably like 3, then I'll listen while reviewing. On avg. probably like 6ish though. |
MUNGOLOID
03.30.10 | as much as i can to understand critique at least 95% of what the album is about. |
BigTuna
03.30.10 | I should just concede to the fact I can't review. BUT I WANT TO |
Brokenjewel
03.30.10 | I've only reviewed things I'm really familiar with so far - all the new stuff seems to get reviewed before I get a chance |
klap
03.30.10 | depends how much i like an album, minimum 3 or 4 listens though
and don't let other people reviewing an album discourage you from writing one yourself broken |

03.30.10 | it's coming dick, jonsi interrupted me |
Brokenjewel
03.30.10 | Yeah, I originally thought I'd only do reviews for things that hadn't been done, but I've started doing some where I disagree with the current ones. |
SrightryEpic
03.30.10 | been in the process of writing my first review for a couple of years now it's gonna be a good one just you wait you guys |
AggravatedYeti
03.30.10 | also I write in the mornings, usually
sometimes at night, normally playing the album, at least when I start a review. thesaurus w/ me, at my desk, alone. |
SeaAnemone
03.30.10 | Srightry the minute I read that I review I'm making a multitude of alt. accounts to pos it, each of them with usernames relevant to Elliott Smith song titles. |

03.30.10 | You're like me: I can only write at night, and it seems to only go well when I'm at my computer desk at my nana's house. I've tried writing at home during the day, and in my bed, and it just doesn't work. Also, writing after masterbating works wonders |
JWT155
03.30.10 | Yet to write a review, plan on writing one asap at the beginning of summer. I'm too much of a "perfectionist" and when I sit down and write everything tends to be way to long. I ussually don't like submitting something unless I think it's the best I can do and I'm a pretty tough critic on myself. |
bungy
03.30.10 | I sit and wait for inspirational thoughts to appear in my head, so it takes a while. |
Deviant.
03.30.10 | Generally at home with the album i'm reviewing playing on the stereo, can't do it with the headphones while i'm writing. I've written 3 reviews while at work, but as a result they have come across as being slightly broken (well to me anyway).
Also, I write in the nude js |
Greggers
03.30.10 | I have to be in a certain mood to write, though sometimes if I have an idea for a review then I'll make sure to get it ASAP so I don't forget. |

03.30.10 | i'd say:
-I write my reviews at all times of day or night
-Usually takes me about a half hour (I should really put more effort in, but I usually just write what comes to me, and if I feel like it, I proofread).....although my Devil and God review took me close to 2 hours.
-The more I like an album, the longer it takes
-I wrote a review while drunk once. I do not recommend this strategy.

03.30.10 | as opposed to in a library, or in my living room w/ roommates in my old house. |
Eclectic
03.30.10 | I write at night, while listening to the album. Sometimes I'll get an idea from the first listen and then start writing the review, going back over the key tracks to make sure what I'm saying is correct. Otherwise its a minimum 3 listens and then going back over the key tracks.
Most of the time I only review when I have a central idea for it, I've tried doing it when I don't and they turn out like shit.
I've noticed though that the reviews I think are shit (i.e my April Uprising review) people love. I honestly thought people would hate my A.U review, it took me a few minutes to write (and about 10 minutes of basic editing), and I did it at 8am in the morning on a crowded train with plenty of distractions. I'd also gotten very little sleep the night before and was feeling pretty crappy. I thought people would think it was stupid and crappy. I posted it anyway because I was tired and I CBF editing it any more.
According to several people it was really good. I'll never understand that. |

03.30.10 | My best thoughts for writing usually come while I'm taking a dump. |
TheSpirit
03.30.10 | usually i'll be doing a totally unrelated activity whilst listening to music and i'll have an introduction or something pop into my head. i'll write it down and then proceed (when i find the free time) to finish the review. |
jesusjuice1179
03.30.10 | I generally spend about 15-25 minutes on my reviews, some are long, some are short, but I think it's enough time to sum up the music as a whole
also I only review albums i've heard all the way through numerous times (Moving mountains being the only exception), anything less than 5 play throughs for the entire album isn't good enough at least for me |
ninjuice
03.31.10 | I always have stuff for soundoffs/reviews going through my head (I have intros for 7 as of now unwritten reviews in Word documents). I think every review I've written has been written in my room, living room or car.
There's no need for a thesaurus tab since I can just press F12 to get a thesaurus AND a dictionary.
Usually they take around an hour, and very rarely get completely finished in one sitting. |
EVedder27
03.31.10 | I started writing reviews because I really enjoyed it at first, and now I feel like I'm obligated to keep the pace up. I still really enjoy the 4.5s and 5s and I feel like this whole reviewing process has improved my writing. |
Brokenjewel
03.31.10 | I find it to be good practice, and it's more fun than doing essays. I pretend it's work, too, so I don't feel like such a bum. |

03.31.10 | I have to be eating a healthy meal of bacon, has browns, eggs, beans, french, toast, coffee, pancakes and maple syrup...
Not really.
I listen to an album, go for a surf and think of it while im out there - sometimes, and then write it all down chya. |
Brokenjewel
03.31.10 | I'd love to go for a surf before a review, don't think the waves on the canal are big enough though. Too many dead rats and shopping trolleys. |

03.31.10 | I put the cd I put the cd I'm reviewing on my iPod and I just listen to it on repeat until I finish the review.

Fugue
03.31.10 | I put it off as long as I can and then when I finally have a paragraph or two under my belt I cant stop until it's done. |
scotish
04.07.10 | mostly it happens just sitting at the laptop. my reviews take ridiculously long to write; I'll be like an hour, don't get very far, stop, come back for a few days later and have a MASSIVE write-gasm from another hour, then another half hour to round it off. and even then they're still shitty. and sometimes not very long :p
but there's exceptions to that rule. like Feels, which started out handwritten in my bedroom after I'd finished the album and was left in awe of its brilliance. or Summerteeth, which I wrote in one go while just listening to the album through once (that was alot of fun to do). |
scotish
04.07.10 | also, writing 5 star reviews are the best even though I do it too much, and review 2 for me cos I'm thinking about picking it up :3 |
Eclectic
04.07.10 | 5 star reviews are really fun to write. I don't know why, I guess because there are no negative aspects to focus on. |
