Top 10 Albums Of '06
1Scott Walker
The Drift

Haunting, dark, dreary, and frightening. Walker creates an album that sounds no other musical artist can even attempt to mimic. The music combines eerie beats, sparse orchestrations and Walkers strange vocals all into one. One of 2006's most unique and interesting albums.
2Tom Waits
Orphans

Usually triple disc albums are crammed full of useless filler but Waits proves that theory wrong. Amongst the epic, triple-disc album Waits showcases his wonderful songwriting skills by creating soft, lonesome songs, whiskey soaked ballads, and loud, boisterous avant-garde rockers.
3Prince
3121

It's Prince, what more is there to say?
4Mono
You Are There

I'm not to keen on many recent post-rock bands but You Are There? is simply beautiful. Moody orchestrations, glimmering guitar lines, and atmospheric ambience dominate the record creating a lush and organic vibe
5Yo La Tengo
I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass

This is possibly Yo La Tengos most varied album. The album features upbeat pop tunes, melancholy orchestra driven tracks, and riff based rockers. Not the bands finest effort but their most upbeat and fun listen.
6Matisyahu
Youth

Instead of repeating the same guitar riff over and over again Matisyahu incorporates smooth electronic effects and trip-hop beats into his music. Add in his smooth, quick-paced reggae voice you get a unique and compelling reggae album.
7Ghostface Killah
Fishscale

Head-noddin' beats and gangsta rapping go good together. While listening to Fishcale I feel like a complete bad-***. It's hard-core, angsty feel cannot be matched by any other rappers of 2006.
8 The Mountain Goats
Get Lonely

The rainy day atmosphere that John Darnielle creates cannot be matches. His lo-fi, twangy acoustic guitar arrangements are bare, dry, and very depressing. His vivid storytelling keeps the listener very interested and proves that he can do more then write a simple indie-pop song.
9Casiotone For the Painfully Alone
Etiquette

I'm not really sure why I enjoy this album so much. It blends cheesy electro-pop with dance-able beats. The music is extremely corny but the synth effects are just so much fun! Listening to Etiquette is just so addicting, once you listen to it once you'll be singing the songs in your head for weeks.
10 Zaar
Zaar

I know this probably shouldn't of made the list but for some reason I felt compelled to put it on here. It's possibly the most random music I've ever listened to (think Mr. Bungle). The music jumps from soft, dreary electronic sessions to blasts of noise in a matter of seconds, a unique and strange listening experience.
