10.04.10 | "tell me how music with no lyrics is "pretentious as fuck"."
I could easily understand why that would make someone think it is pretentious though... |
wyankeif1337
10.04.10 | Hey, I love the album, but let's face it: it IS pretentious as fuck. The songs are 20 minute pieces of pretentious, breathtakingly beautiful awesomeness. |
Emim
10.04.10 | And the fact that they're all 20 minute songs doesn't help anything.

wyankeif1337
10.04.10 | You're really annoying, aren't you? |
tombits
10.04.10 | i'll tell you what's annoying? the way you spout bullshit statements about things you don't understand. sure, art can be self-aggrandizing in the most straight forward sense (kanye west's lyrics, for example) but it honestly baffles me how you can claim instrumental music is pretentious. give me a clear-cut argument as to why and i'll stop posting in this list. |
Jesuslaves
10.04.10 | i think corny's a better word than pretentious |
wyankeif1337
10.04.10 | Instrumental music in and of itself is not pretentious. For example, 12, 15, 24, and (maybe) 32 are barely pretentious, if at all. It's just when the instrumental songs are 23 minutes long that gets to me. It's completely incredible music in every aspect, but it remains pretentious.
And bro, I'm seriously not trying to antagonize you or anyone else. I just stated my opinion that it's a pretentious album. No need to attack me for it. |
bailar14
10.04.10 | maudlin of the Well
listen to it |

10.04.10 | It's a pet peave of mine when anyone calls any form of art "pretentious" without a solid argument behind the statement. Firstly, art is inherently pretentious; it's a visual expression, a physical manifestation of an artist's emotions or visions. I struggle to see how any album is more or less pretentious than another. In this case, it seems like because Godspeed have written music that breaches the boundaries superimposed by what has become "the norm" in western culture (long song lengths, which begs the question: have you ever heard classical?) you've tagged them with the "pretentious" label. Does that mean that every album that diverges from the musical mainstream is also pretentious? What does that say about experimental and avant-garde? Lastly, the way that Godspeed themselves went about their music is anything but pretentious; they hardly gave any interviews and promotion of their records was next to non-existant.
I'm not trying to attack you, I'm just honestly intrigued. |
Emim
10.04.10 | GY!BE is pretentious.
There.
End of story.
