07.21.11 | If #1 is your favorite prog album, then 'Operation: Mindcrime' (rec'd by YetAnotherBrick) should be an easy choice. I'm also going to second the following album:
Amia Venera Landscape - 'The Long Procession'
Cynic - 'Traced In Air'
Fair To Midland - 'Arrows & Anchors'
The Gathering - 'How To Measure A Planet?'
Protest the Hero - 'Fortress'
...and then I'll add a few more:
Devin Townsend - 'Ocean Machine: Biomech' (The lead singer of Strapping Young Lad)
Devin Townsend Project - 'Addicted' or 'Deconstruction' ('Deconstruction' is more progressive, but I enjoy 'Addicted' more. 'Addicted' also has the lady from 'The Gathering')
Edge of Sanity - 'Crimson II' (Opeth-ish)
Karnivool - 'Sound Awake' (one of the best Aussie prog-rock bands; a bit like Tool and Riverside)
Kayo Dot - 'Choirs of the Eye' (the sister band for maudlin of the Well)
The Pax Cecilia - 'Blessed Are The Bonds' (a very similar band to maudlin of the Well)
Porcupine Tree - 'Fear of a Blank Planet' (any and every modern prog fan needs to at least have an opinion of PT, good or bad)
...hope that's good enough for you for now... |

07.21.11 | Oh...and if you dig Isis, then I suppose you should check out Neurosis - 'Through Silver In Blood'. [EDIT] Nevermind...just noticed Neurosis on your Favorite Bands list. |

07.22.11 | Yeah, since you're obviously also in the cheesy stuff (no offense) you should probably love Queensryches original Operation: Mindcrime and basically everything from Rush until Signals.
On the heavier side:
- Death: Human, Symbolic, Individual Thought Patterns, The sound of perseverance (start with Symbolic, just the defintion of progressive death metal)
- Opeth: start with Still Life and Blackwater Park. Probably the hightest rated progressive albums on sputnik
- Tool: Lateralus (second best album of all times)
And if you wanna get to know the roots
Yes - Close to the Edge (# 3 of all times)
King Crimson - Red (# 7)
Pink Floyd - Animals (# 8)

07.25.11 | Karnivool would be a great band for you to check out. I think I saw a Karnivool rec in the list somewhere. Oceansize is also a great band if you want to get into some more "sophisticated" prog.
If you want any stuff on the other side of the spectrum, I can give plenty of recommendations. |
