My favorite albums from this year, the ones that I think will stick with me. | 1 | | The Devin Townsend Project Deconstruction
Everything I like in heavy music. Everything. Over the top, complex, dramatic, funny, screams, roars, melodic, soft to heavy and quiet to loud contrast, immense layering... | 2 | | The Devin Townsend Project Ghost
And now, everything I love in light music. Beautiful, lush, immense, spacious... flutes, man, flutes... That guitar tone... The layering... | 3 | | Haken Visions
Delicious prog metal. Definitely more prog metal than their first album, too. Gave me a similar feeling to how much fun early Dream Theater was. | 4 | | The Black Dahlia Murder Ritual
This album is fantastic. They've increased the level of variation in their music, but sacrificed nothing that makes them them. Some of the melodic guitar parts are what really get me, and I've always loved their singer's scream. | 5 | | Opeth Heritage
This album is far from perfect, and isn't their best by any stretch of the imagination, but, I dunno, it stuck with me, and it got me to look into Camel, finally- he had always mentioned them, but I finally got around to it. It's an enjoyable album, and "The Devil's Orchard" is a classic Opeth song, I think. | 6 | | Steven Wilson Grace For Drowning
I don't know why I put off checking this out for so long, this is really impressive stuff, and it's interesting how he interprets his influences. | 7 | | Fair to Midland Arrows and Anchors
Just great music. Everything I love about them, turned up to 11. | 8 | | Panic! At The Disco Vices & Virtues
A return to form by the surviving two members, and I really respect the effort. Effort which, if you ask me, paid off. | 9 | | Amplifier The Octopus
This album flows from song to song, for two discs, and never once made me want to stop it. | 10 | | Tales of the Sands Myrath
It's funny, I don't consider this album amazing. But... I'm gonna remember it. Especially a few of the songs. The Tunisian influence really gets to me, I just love how Eastern influence feels. | 11 | | Andrew Jackson Jihad Knife Man
This album is a beautiful mess of neurosis. It's just very, very honest music, with some strangely insightful lyrics, in my opinion. | 12 | | Leprous Bilateral
Fantastic band, I want to see them get more and more credit. They have a very recognizable sound. | 13 | | Patrick Stump Soul Punk
Classic? No. Masterpiece? Nah. But an impressive feat by a musician I respect. He did all the instrumentation, which I just always find very respectable. And I'm just a huge fan of his voice. | 14 | | Pirate Left Of Mind
Some very good heavy prog, I just love the tone they have to them. I'd like to see them become popular. | |
