| Dante's January
so my resolution this year was to start buying music again. here's rsome new stuff that came rrrout this year that i purchased. what did ryou guys buy? was it worth it? | 1 | | Cloud Nothings Attack On Memory
The first 'official' hyped album that I purchased and didn't even listen to
until the needle dropped. And to be honest, I'm not really understanding
the hype surrounding it. I've read comparisons to Nirvana and garage rock
and the like, but it all sounds like a more weirder version the
Descendants... and the Descendants would have sucked if they weren't the straightforward band that they
are. It's enjoyable, I just don't see myself
returning to it often. 3-3.5/5 | 2 | | John K. Samson Provincial
I've been looking forward to this one for quite awhile now. The
Weakerthans was the band that made me start falling in love with the
whole indie scene so news of frontman John K Samson's debut solo album
got my hopes up. And he didn't disappoint. The very same witty lyricism
and delivery that made The Weakerthans such a treat to listen to is all over
Provincial. Ranging from pop/folk to ballads of hockey players, Samson
proved to me that he was worth the hype and not just some self-bloated
singer/songwriter hoping to cash in on the already established fan base of
highly popular band. 4/5 | 3 | | Loma Prieta I.V.
Having heard but never actually listen to any of their previous material, the
news of Loma's signing with Deathwish was essentially my catalyst to
check out what these guys are all about. Well IV is basically everything
that I would have expected them to craft: a destructive array of machine-
gun skramz combined with emotive hardcore. So while not too surprising in
its sonic delivery, its nods to its past albums (particularly Last City) and its
slight Converge-esque influence in the latter half of the album is enough for
me to come back to this more than initially planned. 3.5-4/5 | 4 | | Nails/Skin Like Iron Split
The album art of this alone was good enough for me to get this. I'm still
hoping that there's some leftovers of the marble blue color left in this after
Nails' assorted shows, because that seemed to be the only way to get a
hold of one of those colorways. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate my
blacks, but I always try to throw in some color in my collection whenever I
get the chance. Anyways, the Skin Like Iron side on this is more or less
straightforward melodic hardcore with dashes of some chaotic flavor. The
Nails side, on the other hand, shows the band taking an interesting turn
into straightforward death 'n roll (ala later Entombed) that, after repeated
listens, is starting to sound more and more appealing to me. They also
threw in a song in the form of twenty seconds of grind pulverization, which
is also cool. 3.5/5 | 5 | | Drainland/Enabler Split
The guy over at Halo of Flies got this to me super quick... not even one
weekend before it hit my mailbox. This marks the first material with
Enabler's latest lineup, featuring Andy Hurley (yes, that guy), and good
god, it destroys. Heavy as fuck breakdowns, a stellar vocal performance,
and I guess I should have known Hurley's prowess on the kit, given his
metalcore background. Drainland's side is a single sludge inspired track
about a haunted hospital ward. They utilize a lot of electronic elements to
enhance the atmosphere of the song and it works surprisingly well.
Drainland hasn't really impressed me that much in the past so the fact that
they were able to hold my attention for the the entire length of the single-
sided 7" was a feat in and of itself. I'll see where they go from here. 3-
3.5/5 | 6 | | Incendiary/Xibalba Split
Currently in the mail. Red marble colorway. Expecting a shit-ton of satan
breakdowns. | 7 | | All Pigs Must Die Extinction Is Ours/Curse Of Humanity
Currently in the mail. Was extremely lucky enough to grab on the smoke-
grey colorways (limited to like 100 I think, and they sold out in like ten
hours). Band is pretty cool, but I'm mostly looking forward to the
unreleased b-side and the fucking amazing t-shirt that has the album
artwork. | |

02.02.12 | Haven't bought any new music but I've picked up; The Bends by Radiohead, The Moon and Antarctica by Modest Mouse, Illinois by Sufjan Stevens, Wesley Harding by Bob Dylan and Minnesota by Mason Jennings this January. All of which on vinyl :) | cvlts
02.02.12 | man radiohead, mouse and stevens are all ridiculously overpriced imo | syffuf25
02.02.12 | Yeah they were all right around $20-30 bucks. I've just started listening to vinyl though and those are some of my favorites. That and I live nowhere near an actual record store. | GnarlyShillelagh
02.02.12 | Good shit man. Only heard 3 and 4 from this; if I had liked 4 more I definitely would have considered getting a vinyl copy, especially 'cause that artwork is awesome and the marble blue man | CrackTheSkye
02.02.12 | Managed to get a few pre-orders of things (Balance & Composure/ETID/Iselia/Options/Rolo Tomassi/Horrible Crowes). I need to get the new Loma album sometime soon. | cvlts
02.02.12 | @Gnarly: yeah, $5 for the thing wasn't too bad, even though its not amazing or anything.
@Crack: didn't know b&c was coming out with anything new. was thinking about gettin etid and probably going to be gettin iselia pretty soon. | CrackTheSkye
02.02.12 | Oh, the b&c is just a repress of Only Boundaries. I've been wanting it for ages but didn't want to spend $40+ on it. |
