| Thoughts On Kickstarter?
Kickstarter.com is used to help"fund and follow creativity" | 1 | | Slipknot All Hope Is Gone
It really started getting publicity after Tim Schafer put up a Kickstarter for
an as of yet unnamed project; he soon received over 3 million dollars in
pledges. | 2 | | Marilyn Manson Portrait Of An American Family
Now many bands, especially electronic groups, are considering using the
site; it seems like a logical thing to do. | 3 | | A Perfect Circle Mer de Noms
I take issue with the amount of money being asked however, for those who
are into the current dubstep scene Figure, a man known for releasing his
tracks free of charge, put up a Kickstarter for a new album. Having only put
out singles this came as big news, the issue lies with the amount being
asked for. | 4 | | Nine Inch Nails The Fragile
He wanted $15,000 for a new album. A man who has produced and
released many of his hit singles for free wanted $15,000 for an album that
he would write himself, just like his singles, and then more than likely sell to
the public. | 5 | | Digitalism Idealism
So other than the issue of consumers buying a product they helped pay for,
in a literal non-tax payer way, why is this much money needed for
something the man can obviously do the majority of by himself? | |

03.26.12 | Obviously that was just an example, but a band I'm friends with is considering doing Kickstarter as well citing new costs so it made me think of this.
Thoughts? | theacademy
03.26.12 | musicians and kickstarter is nothing new dawg | BlueW
03.26.12 | fuck kickstarter fuck musicians | Acanthus
03.26.12 | I know they're not new, but the amount differs; in this case it's one producer looking for 15k to do what he's already been doing for free, it's a bit baffling. | MO
03.26.12 | 2 is the best manson | Acanthus
03.26.12 | @Metallic - it's soon becoming one of my favorites, though it probably won't pass my number one it definitely is better than I had thought it would be; the lyricism and melodies are catchy. | fr33convict
03.26.12 | Well, let's break it down. That much money is needed because a very large portion (usually about 50% until you get to extremely high donation amounts) of that money is going to pay for the rewards for backing the project. So he's left with about $7,500 - $9,000. Then kickstarter takes a small cut, which I'm not going to add into these figures because I don't remember the percentages off hand. Assuming there's a discount for recording a full album with a studio, recording an LP will cost around 300 a song or $3,300 for an average album. Put an extra grand towards quality mastering and he's left with 4-5.5k. About half of that will most likely go towards printing the CDs (let's say he prints 5,000 copies for $2,500) and the rest would be used for advertising and promoting his release.
Basically it's letting fans become an artist's "record label". It allows complete creative control and allows him to enjoy most of the benefits of a label. And BELIEVE IT OR NOT most people enjoy supporting their favorite artists, especially when they get something in return. | Acanthus
03.26.12 | Thanks for the breakdown, as I didn't know how the money was broken down. I continue to be amused at people buying something they already paid for, and also the fact that he could produce this himself seeing as he is, afterall, a producer with a dedicated studio.
All that aside the refutation of traditional record label - artist relationship is an extremely nice perk, and I oh so love creative control. | fr33convict
03.26.12 | So as an artist that's my best guess of how it's broken down. If he is a producer and has a studio that amount might be a bit... puzzling but that's probably a good ballpark figure. And if you look in the perks section I'm sure most of them come with a copy of the CD free.

Yeup that's the part of the site I love. Now if only I had people willing to give me 15k. :P | Acanthus
03.26.12 | I know right? I guess with a large enough fan base the amount of money for a project is rather high, and I really like how game developers are using the site to make games true to their older counterparts (Wasteland 2 for example). | SiliconFields
03.26.12 | Well usually the artist puts up rewards for donating, so in theory if you donate say $20 and get a shirt +cd, you're basically donating +buying the finished project, so it's not so much that you're paying once and then buying again, but more just paying once | SiliconFields
03.26.12 | Commenting on point 5 I am | Acanthus
03.26.12 | Fine, take away all my points with logic!
