Yeah, Mountain smokes!
The LF albums:
Good Time Warrior
This is the first LF album without John lawton on vocals. GTW features the great and underrated Mike Starrs (ex-Colosseum II. strange New flesh is an awesome album by them!). GTW is also the weakest out of the first six LF records, but it's not that weak a listen imo. The music on here reminds me of Rainbow anno 1980, but it's a tad better (I'm not into Rainbow's post-Dio albums at all!). Mind exploding from 1976 did have a lot of AOR in it, and it's much clearer on GTW. The two opening tracks "Old Man Roller" and "I'll Meet You in L.A." are pretty good, but not fantastic though. It's the last track "Warriors" that impresses the most. It's over 10 minutes long and complex like the songs on banquet, but this doesn't sound anything like Banquet. It sounds more like Queen I think, and it's a fucking awesome track!
Sneak Me In
This is the weakest of all LF's records. The production is warm and good, and some of the riffs are really great. Composition wise the tracks are straight ahead rockers and could have been great if it wasn't for the lame choruses. mike Starrs was fantastic on Colosseum's Strange New Flesh album, and great on Good Time Warrior and here he's just fine. Without those cheesy choruses this album would have been really good I think.
Mean Machine
The return of John Lawton! Mean Machine is LF's heaviest album since the debut. The band went for a more NWOBHM-ish sound on most of these tracks. The production is quite crappy (It sounds damn flat), and the more poppy numbers do no good for me, except for Fire and Rain (I seem to enjoy that track, though I'm not appreciating the AOR sound). Actually I only really like the title track (Which is a guitar solo), Cool Hand Killer and the two very LF sounding tracks "One Night Sensation" and "Let Me Down Slow". One Night Sensation sounds like an updated and more complex version of "Ride the Sky" from the debut, and John Lawton does some pretty rough singing on that track. | wham49
10.28.16 | appreciate the heads up, will check, always wondered how the later albums sounded, new they fell off a bit, the closest Ive come to these is Mind exploding, so wasnt sure it they wee worth it | BenMorrison
10.28.16 | They fell off a bit for sure. They got the mojo again with last years LF release "Awakening". I'm so psyched to hear the new one "Too Late To Hate" (I'm not impressed by the title, but album cover smokes). It's actually its release date today. | wham49
10.28.16 | interesting maybe I'll order it |
