Umbrella Contest 2021 Round 3: Umbrella Piece

2 are out and 24 are still in. Pheromone missed the deadline, so he's also out.
1DJ Shadow
Endtroducing.....

The rules are nearly the same as last time:

1.Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.

2. The theme this round is sampling. Any song that incorporates a sample from another song. It doesn't need to be plunderphonics, sampledelia, or even hip hop. A rock song with a sample in it? Sure go for it. List the sample when reccing.

3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.

4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise, you're good.

5. I'm going to start each new round every Sunday night (EST,) so if you're late, you're out. My 1-2 least favorite recs will be eliminated each round (1 if we don't get a lot of people and 2 if we do.)

***The winner of the competition can recommend me whatever 2 albums they want and I'll listen to them no matter the album as long as it's not impossible to find and as long as neither exceeds 3 hours.***

“Bad Bone”

Nice bass so far. Cool feedback. Not the most engaging thing ever, but the piano is cool too. Not much else to say about this one.

3.6/5 (Passed to next round)
3Polygon Woods
Post Space

budgie
“Introvert"

Echoey and modern so far. Very atmospheric, but no lyrics so far. I wish it had more to it, this was like background music.

3/5 (Passed to next round)

EDIT: budgie doesn't know how to link things so I heard this EP's opener instead of the track he meant.

“Skate Song”

The vocals remind me of Elisabeth Fraser and the music is kind of plain honestly. This isn’t engaging at all, but I guess having vocals makes it better than the other one.

3.1/5 (Passed to next round still)
4Horsey
Bread & Butter

nol
“Seahorse” (ft. King Krule)

Spooky and lo-fi. Some talking over some slow bluesy guitars and psych vocals. Not bad or anything, but also not grabbing me at all. Not feeling this growly pickup at all. I did not like this.

2.8/5 (Passed to next round)
5Altin Gun
Yol

Trifolium
“Bulunur Mu”

Ooh nice percussion. Very perky vocals that I’m mixed on. This is mostly engaging me because of the percussion if I’m being honest.

3.2/5 (Passed to next round)
6Singapore Sling
The Curse of Singapore Sling

fogza
“Overdriver”

Hard rockin’ psych with talked vocals. It’s got that cool factor and everything, but also I’m not feeling it at all. Whoa that solo feedback sounds like screaming more than typical feedback does. Okay, I can respect that. This solo is saving an otherwise boring song.

3.3/5 (Passed to next round)
7Time of Orchids
Sarcast While

JohnnyoftheWell
“Harness Well-Wishers”

Some piano banging with airy male vocals. Now that lyrics have come in, those new vocals are whatever. This is like one big atmospheric piece and I don’t think I’ve ever been about complex atmospheric prog pieces from the 2000s, so weird choice honestly. Pretty unenthused about this, but it’s not bad.

3/5 (Passed to next round)
8Sturgill Simpson
Metamodern Sounds In Country Music

Kompys2000
“It Ain't All Flowers”

Cool backmasking. Sounds like a 70s country rock song with backmasking and some floaty sounds. Not bad at all though. Cool outro solo?

3.5/5 (Passed to next round)
9N'Draman Blintch
Cosmic Sounds

SlothcoreSam
“Essika-Ti “

Alien synths and African bass guitar and drums? What is this? Oh cool funk guitar too. Afrobeat is a pretty solid sub-genre. I wonder if an afrobeat dance club exists, I bet it’d be fun. Oh damn that guitar solo at 6:30 sounds like it’d be great as a sample for some modern hip hop song and I mean that in the most complementary way possible.

3.8/5 (Passed to next round)
10Psychedelic Porn Crumpets
Shyga! The Sunlight Mound

dedex
“The Terrors”

Hello loudness war production! The guitar is so loud and crunchy, but is that a good thing? Kinda basic radio rock with some distortion when you ignore the production.

3.2/5 (+.5 for winning last round) = 3.7/5 (Passed to next round)
11Madhouse Express
Surreal Meadow

someone
“Erwin the Spacedog”

Dreamy and bassy so far. Cool theremin or whatever that sound is, but mostly this just sounds like 70s hard psych again.

3.2/5 (Passed to next round)
12Jacco Gardner
Cabinet of Curiosities

Pangea
“Watching the Moon”

Finally some psych pop. Very Syd Barrett. Simple but unique percussion that pops. Love the voice, lose the string section, love the organs. Good song.

4.1/5 (Passed to next round)
13For Another
Finding Footing

Storm in the Teacup
“Run Mary Run”

The use of that vocal effect is kind of annoying. Reminds me of Ween again actually lol, but this time their song “Spirit Walker” which is one of their weakest ones. The guitar and bass is fine, but mixed so low that they seem like they’re just there to aid the vocals. I kind of hate this honestly.

2.2/5 (ELIMINATED!)
14All Natural Lemon and Lime Flavors
All Natural Lemon and Lime Flavors

Ryus
“Your Imagination”

Shoegaze vocals and offbeat guitar. Decent start I think? As common with this genre, everything ends up building until it floats into the ether. So much goes on, but it’s also just wooshy and bland after a while. Good start though.

3/5 (Passed to next round)
15The Apes
OddEyeSee

ReturnToRock
“Wor Wiz”

Intense intro with the sirens. Weird and engaging, so far so good. Drums are simple, but effective as are the call and response male and female vocals.

3.9/5 (Passed to next round)
16Donovan
Donovan's Greatest Hits

Divaman
“There’s a Mountain”

Pretty flutes so far. I never heard this track, but it’s cute and fun for sure. Haha I like the frantic acoustic toward the end. This is happy music and it makes me happy! Where did the mountain go Mr. Leitch?

4/5 (Passed to next round)
17Comus
First Utterance

Aberf
“Song to Comus”
Intricate acoustic guitar so far. What are those vocals? Is an English gnome singing to me? What the hell is this haha. Violin and flute are always welcome. This is oddly dorky, but also unique and strange. Insane violin solo with great backing bass. This destroys everything else so far.

5/5 (ROUND WINNER! handicap (for others) of +0.5 for the next round)
18Oranssi Pazuzu
Mestarin Kynsi

dbizzles
“Ilmestys”

Intense strings and a spooky background supporting it, decent so far. Ew, those vocals are aural diarrhea. Any merit this has musically is completely undercut by how much I hate these vocals. Ew what’s the weird gurgling sound. At least the weird clubby background beat is nice. The vocals managed to get worse..who thought picking black metal was a good idea for me? The electronic elements are awesome though. Fire the vocalist or something.

2.3/5 (ELIMINATED!)
19Linda Perhacs
Parallelograms

bgillesp
“Parallelograms”

Pretty acoustic work and the layered vocals are also really nice. I already love "Chimacum Rain”, so this is a smart choice. Ooh what is this spacey detour, I love it. I need to check this album eventually. So pretty, it keeps you on your toes with its changes, but all of them fit together like a pretty but jagged puzzle.

4.6/5 (Passed to next round)

botulist
Orchestre Picoby Band d'Abomey-Dahomey
“Mi Ma Kpe Dji”

Good bass, catchy guitar, pleasant vocals. Funky beat, and mediocre production, but who cares, it feels almost live! Pretty cool.

3.6/5 (Passed to next round)
21Sexwitch
Sexwitch

Sinternet
“Ha Howa Ha Howa”

Sensual vocals, a light abrasive background, deep leading bass, nice chanting. This is very pagany. Not my favorite thing ever, but it’s certainly cool. The bass kicking so much ass specifically.

3.9/5 (Passed to next round)
22Quarteto 1111
Quarteto 1111

Zig
“Pigmentação”

Weird vocals, and is that marimba? Dorky as fuck, but also oddly sensual again. You guys do realize I love marimba and vibes in stuff, right? That’s an automatic ear catch for me. Yeah, just throw a flute solo in, why not?

4/5 (Passed to next round)
23Kaleidoscope (UK)
Tangerine Dream

“The Sky Children"

So is this the band Tangerine Dream named themselves after? Very commercial psychedelic pop, but I like the guitar, it's pretty. This song probably didn’t need to be 8 minutes. It’s cool though.

3.5/5 (Passed to next round)
24The Factory
Try A Little Sunshine

protokute
“Try a Little Sunshine”

An attempt at a hit? This is of course totally fine on the ears, but nothing about it is unique. No wonder this band only ever had four songs. The solo’s cool though.

3/5 (Passed to next round)
25Joan Jett and the Blackhearts

normaloctagon
Schatrax - Schatrax
“Aliena's Journey”

Very danceable club music. Background as hell though, like this could’ve used a stronger hook. I’m also not too sure this even counts as psychedelic, but I can’t prove it’s not so whatever.

2.5/5 (Passed to next round)
26It's a Beautiful Day
It's a Beautiful Day

Minushuman24
“Hot Summer Day”

Chill psychedelic rock with alien psych keys. Ooh a violin solo! Feels like a jam more than a structured song at times, but it’s not bad.

3.3/5 (Passed to next round)
27Joan Jett and the Blackhearts

Cosmic Jared
“Celestial Ars”

Angelic background with some acoustic guitar on top. It’s simple and atmospheric. Not my thing at all, but far from offensive.
