REC ME RYUS EDITION ROUND 2

sup. rec me ONE (1) album you think i will like that isn't in my ratings. the qualifiers are: porcupinetheater, DadKungFu, AsleepInTheBack, theBoneyKing, z00sh

Leichenschrei

porcupinetheater – so yeah this was an interesting rec for me considering i dont really like most pure industrial music that i've heard. luckily this is pretty unique for an industrial album and not quite what i was expecting. love those 80s synths and drum sounds. the guy on rym who said some tracks presage industrial techno was right on the money, particularly "Chamber Music." cool stuff for sure. definitely need to be in a particular mood/mindset to enjoy some of this (incessant screaming and breaking glass on "The Agony of the Plasma" for example) but overall, i enjoyed it a lot more than i was expecting. i like the album cover too.

DadKungFu – this wasn't a bad gamble. i can see why someone would think i'd dig this. i have no problem with soft twee-sounding shit but something about this rubbed me the wrong way–part of it, at least. the female singer-led songs kinda sounded too much like a musical to me, and the orchestral instrumentation didn't really help. honestly the "guitar miniature" might have been my favorite thing here, just didn't really enjoy the grander-sounding songs. it wasn't all bad though. parts of "heavy weather" were quite pretty, i liked the piano melody. the male singer also went over a lot better for me. not awful by any means, but some things about this didn't really agree with me.

AsleepInTheBack – his name sounds familiar, i feel like i've heard some of his stuff before. reminds me of hot summer days in the bronx eating mofongo. the more standard salsa tunes like the opener were solid but perhaps not as interesting to me as the extended jams, the obvious one being "cobarde." definitely a slapper. obviously the horns rule everywhere. the closer was cool as it kind of stepped away from the salsa framework. love the energy, very solid and fun. it's damn close between this and 1 but i think this one takes the cake for me.

theBoneyKing – i actually thought the opener here was quite nice, but it wasn't really a good imitation of how this was going to sound. pretty cool how a lot of this melodically sounds like it's from two centuries ago, and i like their voices and vocal harmonies. unfortunately, a lot of this just sounded pretty plain to me, and i know that's probably the intention, but it just didn't vibe with me very well. by the time the second half rolled around, i would have thought that i'd appreciate its experimentation, but honestly, i liked that stuff even less. it's not all bad–most of the first half is just alright to me, but it's nothing aggressively bad. just kinda wish they stuck to the drony bleary-eyed dreaminess of the opener, which is quite pretty. not a bad rec for me though.

z00sh – pretty good, but i wish this either twinkled harder or skramzed harder. it's kind of in a weird middle zone where it isn't soft enough to make me cry nor hard enough to make me cry. the second track has some very nice sections but those guitar melodies are just not exactly what i want in my favorite skramz. or at least, it's not what i wanted in this EP. this is still quite solid, though.
