| best of lesser-known trad. heavy metal
discuss the best of lesser-known traditional heavy metal & contribute with your own suggestions | 1 | | praying mantis Time Tells No Lies
pretty sweet, sample thirty pieces of silver. | 2 | | Cloven Hoof Dominator
album is pretty alright, pretty fun. very basic trad. heavy metal. track to sample would probably be reach for the sky | 3 | | Witchfynde Give 'em Hell
i'm in love with this band's style. sweet trad. metal riffs, satanic aesthetics, awesome raw production on this debut.. album artwork is attractive.. great vocals, the drumming is a pleasure to follow, bass is loud and proud in the mix.. track to sample? the divine victim! that intro/main riff is SEXY. wish the leads were a bit more prominent, therein lies my one complaint. don't miss this one! | 4 | | Mephisto Mephisto
oh shit i love this album.. really bare bones speed metal, though it came out in '88. production is raw, vocals are on fire, songwriting is progressive, in a way.. drums, bass, driving.. but this LP is all about the riffing. long live speed metal. track to sample: mephisto | 5 | | Tygers Of Pan Tang Spellbound
there's nostalgia interwoven in this great goddamn album; it's got the classic rock riffs and the sweet singing vocals, and an overall very bright soundscape. can't skip this one. these vocals are an addiction - track to sample? hellbound | 6 | | Omen Battle Cry
i consider this a sister album to brocas helm's debut. similar production, aesthetics, riffs.. basically awesome entry by US group omen. you'll be singing this one in the shower.. not all the tracks are memorable, unfortunately. track to sample: t/t | 7 | | Satan Court in the Act
i was really surprised this one didn't have a dedicated review. satan slays on this record with some of the most exciting guitar lines in the books. can't overlook the vocal performance either; vocals have a strong ethereal quality. great record. track to sample: break free -- has one of my favorite riffs ever, no question.. and leads are fucking CLASS | 8 | | Crystal Knight Crystal Knight
ahh it hurts my heart how unknown this LP appears. falls more on the lighter end of trad. heavy metal, and maybe not the sound for everybody; soundscape feels more party than pillage. synths, ambiance, that fucking album artwork? even then, the vocals might be my favorite element here. and there's some solid romantic feeling beneath all the music.. listen to this one while cruising down the freeway downtown for a night out
track to sample: sweet dream maker | 9 | | Heavy Load Stronger Than Evil
another addicting entry, this time from sweden. guitar heavy tracks with crazy catchy vocal performances + some awesome songwriting by my account. sample the t/t and if you don't dig it you're a martian. | 10 | | Brocas Helm Into Battle
here we go, the reason i decided to make this list. perfect raspy vocal performances, perfect lyrical content, perfect rock riffs and blazing leads and fun songwriting and raw production with the chunkiest guitar sound and HORRIBLE album artwork. this album is heavy metal incarnate. track to sample? t/t
don't miss this one. | 11 | | Pagan Altar Volume 1
added this one as an afterthought, and it absolutely deserves #1 here. the only album here that i've rated 5/5 on my profile. beautiful album. production is a little rough but the songwriting and riffing makes up for it, and it showcases probably my favorite vocalist in the entire genre of heavy metal. track to sample: t/t | |
