12.27.21 | Iām actually in the process of completely changing career paths so I can do work to help mitigate the effects of climate change. Iām getting ready to have children and canāt tolerate the idea that they will live in a world worse off than the one I currently live in.
Got a degree in English my first time around and it is entirely and wholly useless in almost every aspect. Currently enrolled in a biology program that is specifically environmental restoration and remediation. I want to work on the field doing conservation and helping to protect and preserve out diverse biomes from the tyranny of the Anthropocene.
Got a 3.9 my first semester so far and I start working in the field next semester. Tbqh I havenāt been happier or more satisfied with my life trajectory in years. |

12.27.21 | While doing some of my research last week, I came across a book called Questioning Technology by Andrew Feenberg that has a chapter on the social/political/technological interactions of climate change - itās from the late 90s, so it isnāt the most up to date as far as current trends in actionability go, but the framework for considering it - and the case study he looks at - felt quite sensitive as a starting point for dipping my toes in to how others (in positions of activism) are possibly thinking about it all. Crazy stuff
@Hyp, thatās so cool - congrats! |

12.27.21 | the pandemic has been real good, cause it's given us a reality check in that people can't even be assed or generally aren't interested in participating in incredibly simple and low stakes mitigation methods in the interest of the health of their loved ones in the here and now, let alone drastic and permanent lifestyle and legislative changes that affect the future of ourselves and our children in response to something they cannot easily observe outside of scientific literature |
someone
12.27.21 | im too stupid to study actual science, so im sticking to my english major degree, but all the power to you Hyperion

12.27.21 | > we are all going to die
[2] We are doomed, a global catastrophe will happen. But there is still some little hope: to dampen the consequences. I honestly hope I can contribute to the overall process with my work as a plant biologist. Conservation and improvement on carbon fixation might help, but everyone should participate in saving our planet.
Also that goal sounds amazing, Hyperion!

12.27.21 | nice hyperion! welcome to the biology field! we're mostly nice people
my current work aims to mitigate effects of nitrogen deposition. it has a pretty direct practical use (funded by local government), which is nice since i'm more used to do fundamental work
and yeah it's going really bad with the climate, to the point where processes have started that aren't easily reversable. it's not too late to turn the tide, but big change needs to happen really quickly and it's not happening at the moment. really worrying stuff. i really hope we can get people in charge soon that are able to make a meaningful difference |

12.27.21 | "the virus doesn't help
or does it?"
it does, the economic contraction caused by the pandemic made 2020 the only year where global footprint was reduced sufficiently to be on track to achieve the +2C Paris agreement targets.
the tough thing is that to achieve said objectives, we would not only need to maintain this economic contraction, but also to repeat it every year, i.e. have the economic effect of a covid re-applied every year on top of the previous contractions to sufficiently reduce our footprint.
alas, we aren't on track at all - with everything reopening, 2021 saw emissions increase again relative to 2020

12.27.21 | āim too stupid to study actual science, so im sticking to my english major degreeā
my wording might have been a little too fatalistic. what I should have said was that my English degree was wonderful because of all the new information I learned, but my BACHELORS English degree is essentially worthless on the job market.
my best advice for you would be to absolutely make 100% sure that you know what specific job you are working towards, and heavily, heavily consider graduate school, which is where English and theory degrees really have some ability to score a good job. |

12.27.21 | I used to do what youre planning on doing hyperion. it was called ecosystem management. it had too much filler for me and a lot of holding hands in the woods singing kumbaya stuff (almost literally) but a lot of it was really cool and felt applicable to real jobs. a lot of field work and trips. the people who had a real passion for it are the ones who did well |

12.27.21 | Not that what youāre doing isnāt commendable Hyp, it is, but I tend to roll my eyes at stories like āthese scientists are developing a machine that turns plastic waste into fertilizer!!!ā Or some shit. Thatās all fine and good but in general as a society I really really think we need to not look for some private group of genius-saviors to develop a cheat code for top polluters to keep polluting because the deleterious effects are slightly mitigated. Priority number one is to hold the ~100 corporations who are responsible for the vast majority of ongoing environmental destruction accountable in real, material ways. That includes the pentagon first and foremost.
Also the discourse around individualizing the global warming question to individual consumer choices and Malthusian solutions is disgusting and borders in eugenics. It is not āup to usā to save the planet. That lie benefits no one but the ruling class
Again, not trying to take anything away from what youāre doing, but mitigation absolutely needs to go hand in hand with stopping pollution and destruction from the source |
WeepingBanana
12.27.21 | Also my apologies if Iām totally mischaracterizing your mission here. Iām sure what youāre doing is way more complex than all this, Iām just speaking in very general terms |

12.27.21 | I hear what your saying, because the sad reality is that there is very little the general population can actually do to mitigate the effects of large scale industrialized capitalism. but, as far as Iām concerned, even if thereās only so much I can do on an individual level, Iām still going to do it, because itās the right thing to do.
