Where Did You Start?

We all started somewhere with music. Where did you start? What albums were your proverbial steppingstones to greater things?
1Relient K
mmhmm

This was literally the first album I ever bought. Though I was raised on Enya, Joy Division, and various Christian artists that my father eventually ended up listening to, I ended up siding with this album when I was 12 or so. It was on constant repeat for about 2 straight years. I literally did not listen to anything else. I dissected this over and over again until I had every single lyric and instrumental part memorized.
2Brand New
The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me

This was the second album I purchased. After listening to 'mmhmm' nonstop for years, I started to mature. I heard Degausser for the first time one day, and I thought it was disgusting, the screams put me off because I wasn't used to them. I bought the album anyway because I adored (and still love) the album art. It ended up becoming a part of me in my hardest times. Never has an album touched me as much as this one.
3Ten Kens
Ten Kens

I heard this on an indie podcast my freshman year of high school. I immediately was transfixed. Never has an album grasped me so instantaneously. It is still one of my all time favorite releases. This made up the majority of my freshman year.
4Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas...

This still makes up the majority of my listening- heavy sampling and varied instrumentation has become my favorite thing about music. I jumped to this off of the psuedo post-rock tendencies of Ten Kens and various indie artists that I had previously listened to.
5Esmerine
La Lechuza

This is where I am now- absolutely enamored with instrumentals and sparse vocal placement. Avant-garde has become, more or less, my favorite genre, however. I have grown increasingly fond of ambient music and drone as well. It seems that, as time goes on, my musical tastes are growing more and more minimalistic and specific.
