This was literally the first album I ever bought. Though I was raised on Enya, Joy Division, and various Christian artists that my father eventually ended up listening to, I ended up siding with this album when I was 12 or so. It was on constant repeat for about 2 straight years. I literally did not listen to anything else. This was the second album I purchased. After listening to 'mmhmm' nonstop for years, I started to mature. I heard Degausser for the first time one day, and I thought it was disgusting, the screams put me off because I wasn't used to them. I bought the album anyway because I adored (and still love) the album art. It ended up becoming a part of me in my hardest times. Buckethead, and that's pretty much how I began to expand.

in Rock Band and loved that shit. Started ordering (metal) music magazines and began to really
listen to music. Death, thrash,
grind and heavy metal mostly. First albums bought during my "active music listening" era were the 3
first Metallica CDs and Rust in Peace.

Bought a few Christian metal things off of iTunes like Mortification, Immortal Souls and Torn in Two. Didn't really like it at the time.
Then I decided that sputnik (that I had joined a while back) might have some leads to new bands, and I started trolling through the database for stuff I could still buy at wal mart or wherever.
Then I head about this amazing little thing called limewire and started using it to d/l sputnik bands like Opeth and Thrice. This went on for like a year with me getting a few songs from each band.
Then I discovered mediafire and it all went downhill from there. | ffs

years later i'd discover bach, handel and telemann, my tastes expanding significantly in range and complexity.
as i matured even more i sampled mozart, haydn, schuden, gluck, and of course beethoven.
with my interest in these rigid stylistic composers sated, i sought more passionate and expressive pieces. obviously the later work of schubert and beethoven interested me in this way, though i was more inclined towards tchaikovsky and mahler.
later in life i found pleasure in the likes of stravinsky, schoenberg and of course cage, all renowned for their profound explorations of new rhythms, styles, and sounds.
with my interest in the classical waning, i soon explored a great deal of ragtime, and of course even later, jazz. obviously i started with the likes of jelly roll morton and james reese europe, but inevitably was later drawn to the likes of beiderbecke and armstrong.
naturally i then moved on to bebop virtuosos; with charlie parker, thelonious monk and dizzy gillespie all sating my evolving appetites.
later in life i found myself with more affinity for improvisation, turning to the likes of mingus, coltrane and of course davis.
again i found myself at a crossroads in my musical life, and though i had dabbled in the so called "blues" music with the likes of robert johnson, now i found myself even more drawn in by the stylings of such legends as muddy waters and john lee hooker.
my stint with blues was brief however, as i soon discovered rock and roll. classics such as bill haley and the comets, buddy holly and obviously elvis "the motherfucker" presley, i felt i had found my niche.
again it seemed i was mistaken, as it was at this point in life i discovered the beatles. they literally changed my musical world. soon i found myself dabbling in blues rock, jazz fusion, punk rock and even heavy metal.
the years went by and more recently i found myself listening to a lot of grunge, though as i got older this changed into hardcore punk and eventually metalcore.
these days i listen exclusively to dubstep | Motiv3

The song makes me think of the Kurt Vonnegut short story "Harrison Bergeron", which presents a world where absolutely social equality is enforced by crippling those with special abilities so they are at the same level as the lowest common denominator. It's essentially a clever retelling of the "tall poppy syndrome", where people want to cut people with more money, talent, better looks, or whatever, down to size. I'm not sure if at the end the maples have arranged to have the oaks literally cut down to size, or if the maples' agitations have led to the whole forest being clear cut, but either way it's a clever jibe at those who nurse resentments and want to bring down those above them in some way. | jdennis31
