| Where Did You Start?
We all started somewhere with music. Where did you start? What albums were your proverbial steppingstones to greater things? | 1 | | Relient K mmhmm
This was literally the first album I ever bought. Though I was raised on Enya, Joy Division, and various Christian artists that my father eventually ended up listening to, I ended up siding with this album when I was 12 or so. It was on constant repeat for about 2 straight years. I literally did not listen to anything else. I dissected this over and over again until I had every single lyric and instrumental part memorized. | 2 | | Brand New The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me
This was the second album I purchased. After listening to 'mmhmm' nonstop for years, I started to mature. I heard Degausser for the first time one day, and I thought it was disgusting, the screams put me off because I wasn't used to them. I bought the album anyway because I adored (and still love) the album art. It ended up becoming a part of me in my hardest times. Never has an album touched me as much as this one. | 3 | | Ten Kens Ten Kens
I heard this on an indie podcast my freshman year of high school. I immediately was transfixed. Never has an album grasped me so instantaneously. It is still one of my all time favorite releases. This made up the majority of my freshman year. | 4 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas...
This still makes up the majority of my listening- heavy sampling and varied instrumentation has become my favorite thing about music. I jumped to this off of the psuedo post-rock tendencies of Ten Kens and various indie artists that I had previously listened to. | 5 | | Esmerine La Lechuza
This is where I am now- absolutely enamored with instrumentals and sparse vocal placement. Avant-garde has become, more or less, my favorite genre, however. I have grown increasingly fond of ambient music and drone as well. It seems that, as time goes on, my musical tastes are growing more and more minimalistic and specific. | |

03.05.12 | Chevelle - first band I truly got into
Muse - tore me away from more mainstream hard rock and into stuff bordering on prog
Radiohead - helped expand myself beyond Muse
Oceansize - still my favorite band and totally changed my outlook on music
Mogwai - listened because of their influence on Oceansize, introduced me to post-rock
GY!BE - taught me how to enjoy more minimalistic/classical influenced stuff
Minus the Bear - introduced me to indie
Thrice - introduced me to my ever expanding trek through post-hardcore
Rosetta - acclimated me to harsh screams
This Town Needs Guns - sent me on a short math rock phase
Amia Venera Landscape - acclimated me to some metal
Gospel - most recently got me into emo/screamo styles | auberginedreams

After that it was TDWP and then everything changed with As Cities Burn - Come Now Sleep. Since then I've gotten into post-rock, screamo, and more indie/alt oriented rock. | Dimor

03.05.12 | 8 years old - bought Eminem's The Eminem Show. Loved it. Also listened to The Rasmus a lot.
10 - Got Gorillaz - Demon Days and thought it was fucking weird, loved it however and still do.
Other music I listened to was shit, not really much going on. Got exposed to a lot of good music
through THPS games though.
11 - Got heavily into Children of Bodom and Slipknot. Also random Opeth and Rotten Sound songs (I
don't get it either)
13 - Got Guitar Hero II (oh fuck yes) and started listening to All That Remains, Lamb of God,
Buckethead, and that's pretty much how I began to expand.
14 - Heard At the Gates, The Haunted and Evile through a song pack
in Rock Band and loved that shit. Started ordering (metal) music magazines and began to really
listen to music. Death, thrash,
grind and heavy metal mostly. First albums bought during my "active music listening" era were the 3
first Metallica CDs and Rust in Peace.
15 - jazz, prog etc
16 - post-hardcore, metal/deathcore, breakcore, sludge, doom, crust, blues, chiptune, punk
and so I'm who I am now, a metalfag who pretends to have a diverse taste. | Sanders

03.05.12 | the first music I remember listening to was the Beatles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Beach Boys, Creedence, etc
stuff my dad likes | Emim
03.05.12 | First stuff I was actually interested in listening to was our local oldies station. Used to have like 20 of my favorites on a cassette that my brother and I taped off the radio.
First album I ever bought was P.O.D.'s Satellite.
Then Kutless' Sea of Faces
Then Chevelle's Wonder What's Next and from that a lot of mainstream crap (3DG and such)
Then Disciple's Scars Remain (probably the first metal album I bought)
Eventually through the X series of compilation CDs I was exposed to a few Demon Hunter songs I liked and from there bought August Burns Red's Messenger which was the first metalcore I ever listened to.
Then Underoath's Define the Great Line
Becoming the Archetype's Physics of Fire
Bought a few Christian metal things off of iTunes like Mortification, Immortal Souls and Torn in Two. Didn't really like it at the time.
Then I decided that sputnik (that I had joined a while back) might have some leads to new bands, and I started trolling through the database for stuff I could still buy at wal mart or wherever.
Then I head about this amazing little thing called limewire and started using it to d/l sputnik bands like Opeth and Thrice. This went on for like a year with me getting a few songs from each band.
Then I discovered mediafire and it all went downhill from there. | ffs
03.05.12 | gregorian chant when i was much (much!) younger, obviously later on getting into the likes of Ockeghem and des Prez; then becoming quite a big fan of Byrd.
years later i'd discover bach, handel and telemann, my tastes expanding significantly in range and complexity.
as i matured even more i sampled mozart, haydn, schuden, gluck, and of course beethoven.
with my interest in these rigid stylistic composers sated, i sought more passionate and expressive pieces. obviously the later work of schubert and beethoven interested me in this way, though i was more inclined towards tchaikovsky and mahler.
later in life i found pleasure in the likes of stravinsky, schoenberg and of course cage, all renowned for their profound explorations of new rhythms, styles, and sounds.
with my interest in the classical waning, i soon explored a great deal of ragtime, and of course even later, jazz. obviously i started with the likes of jelly roll morton and james reese europe, but inevitably was later drawn to the likes of beiderbecke and armstrong.
naturally i then moved on to bebop virtuosos; with charlie parker, thelonious monk and dizzy gillespie all sating my evolving appetites.
later in life i found myself with more affinity for improvisation, turning to the likes of mingus, coltrane and of course davis.
again i found myself at a crossroads in my musical life, and though i had dabbled in the so called "blues" music with the likes of robert johnson, now i found myself even more drawn in by the stylings of such legends as muddy waters and john lee hooker.
my stint with blues was brief however, as i soon discovered rock and roll. classics such as bill haley and the comets, buddy holly and obviously elvis "the motherfucker" presley, i felt i had found my niche.
again it seemed i was mistaken, as it was at this point in life i discovered the beatles. they literally changed my musical world. soon i found myself dabbling in blues rock, jazz fusion, punk rock and even heavy metal.
the years went by and more recently i found myself listening to a lot of grunge, though as i got older this changed into hardcore punk and eventually metalcore.
these days i listen exclusively to dubstep | Motiv3
03.05.12 | started with nu metal and metalcore, stuff like trivium, slipknot, linkin park, BM4V, Avenged Sevenfold etc. Then moved on to melodeath like dark tranquility and in flames, then heard BTBAM. Since then, my taste in music has been a lot of places. | Emim

03.05.12 | Basically I listened to shitty music until I saw School Of Rock and my dad lent me all the albums played in that movie and I was on the path to redemption. Then I met this kid in highschool who basically changed the way I listen to music from single song not really analyzing them to listening to full albums and looking into lyrics and the artists history. He also got me into a lot of bands/albums that are favorites today (godspeed, my bloody valentine, the microphones, neutral milk hotel) and after that I joined Sputnik when Aids showed me the site and there's my evolution into a snobby music blogger | bloc
03.05.12 | Grew up listening to adult contemporaries, and 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's pop from my parents. I still love 80's pop though, but eventually turned on to Nickelback, and then Linkin Park. Then started to get into Franz Ferdinand, The Bravery and Bloc Party and Slipknot in high school. | Emim

03.05.12 | Wanna know? Really?
The Gladiator OST. True story. | KILL
03.05.12 | Ah, The Trees. The song makes me think of the Kurt Vonnegut short story "Harrison Bergeron", which presents a world where absolutely social equality is enforced by crippling those with special abilities so they are at the same level as the lowest common denominator. It's essentially a clever retelling of the "tall poppy syndrome", where people want to cut people with more money, talent, better looks, or whatever, down to size. I'm not sure if at the end the maples have arranged to have the oaks literally cut down to size, or if the maples' agitations have led to the whole forest being clear cut, but either way it's a clever jibe at those who nurse resentments and want to bring down those above them in some way. | jdennis31

03.05.12 | Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and Silverchair's Neon Ballroom were the first two albums I fell in love with and got me wanting to learn to be a musician, then White Pony came out and got me to transition into the heavier side of stuff and from there its been a long, convoluted journey through music. | North0House2
