ROUND 2

MATH ROCK or POST HARDCORE

keep jams under 8 minutes please.
2TTNG
Animals

Drifter

"Baboon"

Gonna get one thing out there now. I dont jam much math rock or post hardcore. But that IS why i asked for recs! Math rock in particular never interested me much and i've learned to be skeptical for sput-hyped bands. I've seen the name TTNG thrown around on sput a lot so naturally i was cautiously optimistic. The song though, was pretty sweet. Chill vibes and stunning guitar work that felt incredibly natural despite the technicality.

butcherboy

"Amicus"

The apparent precursors to The Jesus Lizard, and they didn't disappoint. The song isn’t groundbreaking per say, but the bass is thick and and the song is just plain fun.

3.9/5
4Bear vs. Shark
Terrorhawk

dbizzles

"Catamaran"

For this song, I think the vox stuck out to me the most. There’s nothing too crazy going on and the song is a one way street but overall i can't say anything particularly wrong with it cause it was just plain fun to jam out. The ending screams were dope.

The View From This Tower

pjorn

"Cut Self Not"

I think the song does a wonderful job of sounding heavy but not overdoing it. The riff was sweet and may or may not have had me subtly air guitar with one hand.

With Her Came the Birds

UniqueUniverse

"Hypothesis"

A sput user original? Gear up and get ready for 5 minutes of sad boys with guitars. The song is catchy and creates a large wall of sound. I see some promise in these guys. Nice job to whoever’s project this is!

7Atalanta
Tainted

Conmaniac

"How Many People Should be Dissected?"

The vocalist wails over a mostly silent backdrop in the into before the rest of the band come in full force. Some slow and brooding chugs mixed in with your favorite emo noodling riffs are present. Very emotionally driven and tortured. Perhaps a bit too much for its own good but it works.

8Gay For Johnny Depp
What Doesn't Kill You, Eventually Kills You

VaxXi

"Humility Is For People Who Don't Comprehend Their Own Mortality"

The shortest rec yet, but it was pretty darn solid. The song is slick and moves along nicely until the slow build at the end and big wail by the vocalist that follows. The track ends aggressively and quick.

Songs on Love Nos. 48602-48608

Ovrot

"48606"

An instrumental (the first one i believe)! I liked how the song was able to stay unsettling and tense without doing anything too drastic. The tempo change ups kept things interesting.

Feel the Dying Note

Archelirion

"Pyramid"

Won’t lie if i didn't know any better, I would've thought this was a djent record based on that cover art (not necessarily a bad thing). Thankfully though, this was nicer than djent. Great playing done by the guitarist and the vocals were lovely. Sincere, sweet, and chock full of dem twinkles.

3.8/5
11Big Black
Songs About Fucking

ArsMoriendi

"Precious Thing"

That was heavier than i was expecting. Song is noisy and abrasive in the right ways and that guitar/bass was nasty. The song seems to check a lot of boxes but it didn't quite grab me completely until the “I will hold you down” section.

3.6/5
12On The Might of Princes
Where You Are and Where You Want to Be

hal1ax

"And The Hat Stays On"

This one starts fine but ends pretty awesome. The song is overflowing with youth and intensity. The clean break in the middle of the song leading into the heavy outro was sick. Very pure and no bullshit emo/hardcore.

3.8/5
13I the Mighty
Satori

Ebola

"Embers"

Got some modern proggy vibes on this one. Not too keen on the vocal style, but i cannot deny he is talented. The song is catchy can fun, but perhaps a bit too clean for me personally.

superluminals

"Aren't You an Angel"

The song starts very quiet but then the bass comes in and the song slaps you in the face. Really like the vox here. Despite the song not going anywhere too drastic, there’s a certain unhinged quality about it that i dig.

For Long Tomorrow

Dewinged

"Goodbye (feat. Toki Asako)"

Pretty af japanese math rock with post rock roots. As always, female vocals were a welcome addition. The musicians in the band may play effectively, and that’s great, but the drums are the real star here. They’re quick and precisioned but seem to compliment the softer vocalist pretty well.

L4titudes

"By You"

So i've only heard Repeater a while back. I remember digging it but never really delved into their discog. The bass is tasty and the track grooves pretty hard, I can certainly see why the band has a positive rep.

"Outerspace"

*.1 penalty for band already rec'd*

Another Colour song, and it was dope. Doesn't go overboard with the guitar noodling and the vocal melodies are nice. As expected, big fan of the repeated lyric section. Certainly sold on jamming the LP.

Dear Father

Ocean of Noise

"Cemetery Walls"

Probably a bit more standard hxc than post hxc but it’s whatever. This wasn't as good as i remember it being but i still dug it. I can't really point out anything specific with the track that i loved but the tone/lyrics they have going work well with the music itself and the passion of the vocalist is appreciated.

Avagantamos

"December"

If there’s one thing i can rely on in post hardcore it seems to be awesome bass. What i also like about this is the way the vocals dont have any distinctness to them but go along with the rest of the band as if they are another instrument.

bgillesp

"Headache"

Good old friendsandbeercore, noodle/twinkle breaks included. Earnest and true to the genre, nothing groundbreaking but with this type of music I feel that emotion is far more important. Music video was cute.

21Joliette
Principia

50iL

"Quiral"

Nice riffage in this one. I loved the slower, second half of the song. It really complimented the chaos of the first half well. I have no idea what the guy is saying as i dont speak (what sounds like) spanish but he sounds pissed.

"Formaldehyde"

Relaxing, chill, almost beachy even. The small little build up towards the end with the harsh vox in the background was unexpected but dope. Will have to check the EP out.

"Honest Sleep"

I’ve only heard Is Survived By so i’m not entirely sure how this band sounds overall but this one was heavier/more punk sounding than i remember ISB being. The clean break was a little unexpected but i was cool with it. That short but sweet drum/vocal combo with the intermittent guitar fill was rad.
