Timeless

pjorn

Here we go, first jam of the bunch. “Timeless” is an exotic jungle dnb journey through space. The album seems to be more vocal intensive than its other dnb counterparts, making use of the (sadly) late Diane Charlemagne. Don’t worry though, there’s still an abundance of wildlife samples ranging from ocean waves to monkey chatter that dnb listeners/musicians have come to know and love. “Timeless” has this ethereal and futuristic atmosphere that it maintains throughout it’s entire run but it never sounded cheesy/insincere, only sophisticated.

Devious Methods

sincerelyaural

This one was pretty interesting, incorporating a sizeable amount of styles to change things up; taking influence from things like rap/hip hop and even metal at times (“Ultrasonic Sound”). There’s always something new being heard but thankfully never really felt unwelcomed.“Devious Methods” is quite sample-heavy and maintains a perpetualy controlled chaos. Beats are dark, dense, and pump you full of adrenaline.

4Pendulum
Immersion

Dewinged

So this was my first full Pendulum album experience and I’ll actually say it was better than I was expecting. The record takes on a ton of styles and has some very catchy tunes. “Immersion” felt like an ambitious and far less obnoxious “beach volleyball commercial music” cake with dnb flavored ingredients. With this said, it just really isn't my thing and I believe it didn’t feel as genuine or immersive (no pun intended) as the other recs here. Pendulum show great promise with tracks like “The Island (pt1 & 2)”and “Comprachicos” but sadly falter on tracks like “Watercolor” and the wacky “Self vs Self.”

Liumin

Archelirion

Airy and almost beautiful, “Liumin” is a long but worthwhile journey. Songs flow into each other naturally and the record is certainly meant to be experienced as a whole. The beats and foundation of the tracks aren’t “in your face” or bombastic but instead give the listener a kind of auditory context. Like the hazy and blurry backgrounds seen in macro photography, albeit in musical form. With this all said, the album takes on a slightly more aggressive state as it approaches its conclusion.

Super Ape

ArsMoriendi

Ahhhh some dub reggae, neat. Sounds incredibly fresh despite coming out in the 1970s. Songs are catchy, chill, and drenched in reverb. You get your classic reggae skanks but with some extra dub herbs and spices. The album is actually quite cathartic and dreamlike unlike what it’s zany cover art may suggest (especially on songs like “Dread Lion”), really cool. Its possibly not as electronic as I was expecting/wanted for this round but i’ll take it, the album was pretty dope.

7Mark Stewart And The Maffia
Learning To Cope With Cowardice

50iL

An album blending aspects of post punk and dub. “Learning to Cope with Cowardice” is nearly always on edge and feels ready to break down at any moment, like a television struggling to maintain a signal. The album feels synthetic but harbors traditional elements and components like bass guitars, trumpets, or sax. On some songs, Stewart will change something up quickly just when you think the song is about to find a sense of security. Very diverse and unique record.

Exorcise The Demons

L4titudes

Overall, a much darker and daunting album than the rest here. The record can feel like an anxiety-ridden trip into a back alley at 3 in the morning and begs for your full attention. Tracks seem to freeze time and make you think about those urban murder mysteries you heard about as a kid, you may know what I’m talking about here by listening to “Capital D” or “Technical Warfare.” A haunting and unique dnb experience for fans of spooky but tight jams.
