TFK are kind've like Linkin Park - they're not ripping LP off even if the final chords are similar. They're just trying to make a good song, whether or not u agree, I think they succeed, but to constantly be bitching about how generic a song or how much a band is like another is retarded. No one is saying Defeater is ripping off hardcore bands, cause there are so many hardcore bands. Ppl are going to say anyone in this genre sounds like Linkin Park because LP stands out so successfully. Also hilarious given that LP gets shat on so much. And there's nothing wrong with trying to make a song that sounds like another band you like anyway. Its all a joke.

Metal fans don't "band together" and trash on other music just for the hell of it. In fact people hate on certain music simply because they don't like it, not because of their pride. And if that's the case then true, they're idiots.

^I'm simply saying its a double standard because many metal bands sound more similar to each other than TFK sounds to Linkin Park. There's just not as many bands in the LP TFK genre.

And I disagree. I certainly think metal fans band together to trash on music, just like fans of any genre band together to hate on other genres. Not saying you do it. But its pretty obvious that they do. Depending on the initial response, definitely people allow their opinions to be swayed because they're insecure. Same reason they like to hate on things given the opportunity, to make themselves feel better.

And my point about it being okay to sound like another band is based on the principle of inspiration. Every band is inspired by other bands. Maybe TFK was going for an LP feel this time. And thats okay. Just like it'd be okay for a band to try to sound like old school In Flames. But going for the LP feel gets shat on way more. Understandably, partly cause LP makes simpler music. But that doesn't mean its any easier to make successful (sounds good to the artist - I don't think every band that tries to sound like LP is trying to get more ppl to like it: If I was an artist, I would be more than happy to create a song that sounded like Linkin Park, and it'd come straight from the heart cause I like LP - it would not be forgettable to me, as Linkin Park is not forgettable to me)

Also, this wasn't so much a response to this thread as to the overall mentality of the site. I used to say shit like this more often, now I do it less. But every once in a while I like to take this perspective because no one else has the balls to do it.

^And yeah, I see what you're saying about the original versus the carbon copy, but the point is not to make a carbon copy. Its to take something you love, put your own spin on it, and then that's progress. Or at least that's the idea.

I'm the only one that doesn't have rock before metal. So I really don't know what you're on about

You know, metal fans aren't the only "asshats" out there. It's like you're trying to say that all fans of metal are the root of all evil and are trying to destroy every other music genre out there. Like I said, people don't hate on music for their pride most of the time, and if they do then yes they're idiots. But you don't see Metallica fans going out and punching/shitting on Justin Bieber fans every single second of the day just because their taste in music differ from theirs. Believe me, I'm a huge metal fan, and yet even I like the occasional pop song on the radio every now and then. I have friends who are Lady Gaga/Ke$ha fans and I respect their different tastes.

titanslayer, I believe you misunderstood me too. Obviously, I am mostly to blame for being misunderstood. I'm not hating on anyone for liking music that isn't metal, nor am I hating on anyone for disliking TFK or LP. I get frustrated by the "ripping off LP" comment. I'm simply saying that two bands sounding similar is not reason to dislike one of them. If you dislike the sound, then yes you are going to dislike both probably. That isn't what I was complaining about. I just don't like the "generic" "ripping off ____" comments. because if it was a band the person liked, and it sounded like another band they liked, they wouldn't say that. That's the double standard I'm talking about. Hopefully, this was understood.

It's true, most people will say "rip-off" when it's a style they don't like and "heavily influenced" when they do like the sound. Even if Marillion is basically a Gabriel era Genesis rip-off, Gabriel-era Genesis is the best thing ever, so I say "heavily-influenced" and give Misplaced Childhood a 4. I'll take the more cynical approach though. Both TFK and Marillion are rip-offs, not neither.
