RIP Tom Diaz, former TWIABP vocalist

2018-11-04 by Rowan5215 STAFF | 29 Comments
Tom Diaz, former lead vocalist of indie/emo group The World is a Beautiful Place and I Am No Longer Afraid to Die, has passed away. Diaz was the vocalist for many of the band's most beloved releases, including the Formlessness EP, debut album Whenever, If Ever and their classic split with Deer Leap, before departing the band in 2012. Details of his passing are still scarce, with the band sharing a short statement on their Facebook memorialising Tom and asking fans to donate to a charity in his honour:

"We are incredibly heartbroken about the passing of Tom Diaz. He was an extremely talented artist, with such a huge amount of musicality. On top of all of that, he was an incredible friend.

Tom was in the band from 2009-2012, and we deeply cherish the times we got to share with him. I'm sure anyone could attest to his kind and loving nature.

We have heard that the family would appreciate donations to the Friends of Assisi Food Pantry in Danielson, CT. facebook.com/friendsofassisi/."

RIP Tom. Formlessness meant so much to me when I was in high school.

Maybe weird to ask considering the timing, but wonder why they want donations sent to a food pantry? Does it correlate with his death somehow?

I remember hearing years ago that his health issues were the reason he left the band in the first place. Don't remember what exactly he was struggling with, but he'd been struggling with it for awhile. Doesn't make this any less tragic.

I have a really personal relationship to this band. An old band I was in played a show or two with them. A friend of mine let them crash at his place. Those early records were massively important to me and my friends. They say you shouldn't meet your heroes and that's true most of the time; there were a bunch of people in World Is and some of them were dicks, without naming names. But Tom? Tom was the best guy. Tom stuck around for our set. We had a few conversations and I'll always remember how humble and personable he was. Honestly, I'm a bit fucked up over this news. Tragic, awful shit. RIP
