Before someone accuses me of article-jacking them again, at the time of posting there are no other PTH articles. :p

Nice track. Rody's vocals were a little off-putting at first but then I read about how he almost literally had to relearn how to sing in order to even be on this record, so I really can't dog him too hard. He's still got the range.
| |
jacked
| |
Yeah the vocals are bad. Feel bad for the guy but it doesn’t work
| |
"I read about how he almost literally had to relearn how to sing in order to even be on this record"
Oh damn I had no idea. Just looked it up. I can relate, being 30+ has made singing a fucking challenge.
| |
is that why they sound so weird? hmm
| |
ME HAVE BIG HYPE
| |
his voice is so different.
also ME HAVE BIG HYPE [2]
| |
it only sounds a smidge weird for the first minute if anything. fantastic track to come back to, better than all of PM I think (or at least as good as its best ie Tidal, Harbinger, Ragged Tooth). The track sounds safe but that's not a bad thing, especially after it being so long since their last release. the middle section owns
can't wait to hear the rest, this has been my most anticipated release for quite a long time!
| |
2 bonus songs already confirmed so 12 PTH tracks this year??????? hell tf yeah
| |
Felt a bit off during the first verse but I feel Rody’s vocals always take a bit to get used to on new songs. It’s a banger and I can’t wait for the new album
| |
hype
| |
It's ok I guess, could (and probably will) grow on me. PM is better imo.
| |
My body is ready.
| |
Took me a minute to get use to the new cadence of his voice. Rody still got it though. Great track, dare I say Kezia vibes. Excited to hear the rest of this thing.
| |
It's a bit straightforward, but cool nonetheless. Can't wait to see what the rest of the album has to offer.
| |
The drummer is claiming on reddit that the rest of the album will put people's vocal worries at rest and that Rody still does a shit ton of harsh vox, guess we'll see.
| |
Rody sounds less try hard so will rule obv
| |
Rody sounds stellar. Sick bass as always.
| |
will be jamming this into oblivion
| |
sounds a bit by-the-numbers
| |
definitely bringing back that kezia vibe. FUCK yea. THIS is what I've been wanting out of this band. chorus is great too.
| |
I'm not big on a lot of the melodies Rody went with here, but his voice does sound less over the top and I think that's a good thing.
| |
For some odd reason, he's reminding me a little of Cedric Bixler-Zavala. Obviously far less bombastic though. I dig this.
I wonder how he sounds performing the old stuff live though.
| |
I’m actually getting Scurrilous vibes from this, which had a lot less layering and harmonizing than Kezia. Not necessarily a bad thing, some of my favorite PTH tracks are off that album (Moonlight is a damn masterpiece).
Anyways, it’s been way too long to wait for new material, and I’m pumped as hell. Kezia blew my mind the first time I heard it, and Protest the Hero have always had my undivided attention on every subsequent release. I even donated for the production of Volition, and got my name on the back cover of the vinyl. This will be a quick purchase for me, because I respect what the band has done since parting from their label.
| |
God I feel like I've been waiting forever for new material from these guys. New song is great. Consider me hyped. With this, new Caligula's Horse, new Haken, new The Ocean and new Ne Obliviscaris, feels like it's bound to be a good year for prog, even though it all starts quite late in the year.
| |
I actually liked the element of surprise in some of the vocal choices. Dramatic singing can be cool.
| |
What happened to Rody? I may have missed some news. . .
Personally, I thought the intro was mega off, then the rest is fine
| |
Isn't this the guy Spencer Sotelo tries to be?
| |
"Personally, I thought the intro was mega off, then the rest is fine"
100% agree with this.
I was about to turn off right after the intro, when the vocals started. But glad I stuck around; the rest of the song is kind of great.
| |
"Isn't this the guy Spencer Sotelo tries to be?"
Scarlet is such a classic Rody ripoff
| |
I don't find his voice that weird, just noticeably different than his usual.
But as with everything after Fortress, I am so bored listening to this.
| |
good song. vocals are fine you mutants
| |
I think the mix on the vocals is a little weird, but the performance is ace
| |
honestly rody sounds better here than he has in a long time. I like that he rained it in and didn't too much over the top shit.
I guess we're lucky he blew his voice out.
| |
"Personally, I thought the intro was mega off, then the rest is fine"
yah intro made me cringe hard but he figured it out after that -- song is no Drumhead Trial but it's pretty tight, especially that chorus
| |
"Isn't this the guy Spencer Sotelo tries to be?"
Because they occasionally have similar melodies and both sing in a high register? Totally.
| |
Second half is so so good.
| |
CHORUS IS SOOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOD UGHHHHH
| |
AMELIA PLEASE DON'T GOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
| |
his vocals were never good to begin with, always very obnoxious kind of like if the guy from Of Montreal were in a metal band.
| |
I may not have realized anything was off with his voice if I hadn't read the comments first. I still think he sounded pretty fucking good all things considered.
Song was really good, especially the last half.
| |
decent but not especially compelling overall. i echo everyone else's objections to the first 30 seconds, which are very bad
| |
Honestly I think his vocals are fine, the guy can obviously still sing quite well. But they just feel like they didn't match up well with the song? Hard to put my finger on it but something sounded slightly off.
That being said, the song definitely gets significantly better after the first 45 seconds or so. I don't know what they were thinking with that intro bit lol. Also the lyrics in the beginning are kinda cringe.
| |
Never understood the comparisons between this guy and Spencer. They both have different styles, but personally I think Spencer is a way better singer.
| |
Spencer IS a way better singer, personal tastes aside he just has better technique and can do more with his voice. But yeah, I always thought the comparisons were dumb. People heard similarities on Scarlet and never let it go.
| |
I'm always curious what people actually mean when they talk about a singer's technique tbh. Like, 'it sounds better'? 'It is more healthy'? People mean very different things.
Scarlet is pretty similar to the PTH guy, but other stuff Spencer does is definitely very different
| |
we mean a singer's technique
| |
calligraphy surely is a nice craft
| |
Nice to see Cedric guest featuring at the start of this.
| |
People who learn "proper technique" almost always sound worse in terms of harsh vox. The throat splitting raw stuff is much more sonically rewarding.
| |
That said, you obviously can't tour like that.
| |
Yo this slaps. Rody's vocals in the beginning sound like Calculated Use of Sound era but other than that he sounds fine.
| |
how are we like 100 comments in and no one has mentioned the lyrics. what tf is the dude talking about?
| |
Agreed, he sounds super young in the first bit of vocals, it's like a time machine
I also stopped paying attention to PtH lyrics after Scurry
| |
"what tf is the dude talking about?"
Lol, the song's about Amelia Earhart. And feminism. Gyro about to be triggered by the F-word.
| |
Not feeling the vocals
| |
Gyro will have you know that she is simply the dollar store variant of Lindbergh.
| |
I miss the old headline "PTH let fly The Canary"
| |
Decent track, but Rody's vocals have clearly changed.
Not a huge fan of the mixing either.
Looking forward the full album, though.
| |
I miss the old headline "PTH let fly The Canary" [2]
| |
Just gimme the fuckin tab book
| |
This grew on me a lot. Some awkward melodies aside, I think Rody actually sounds way more appealing here than he has in a really long time.
| |
It fucking rocks, it rocking fucks. And I love it.
| |
The song rules, but has anyone noticed the weird vocal thing Rody does at 2:38? Am I going crazy?
| |
yeah listening to this again I can't hear whatever made me cringe in the intro, so yeah, full on hype for this
| |
new album is gonna rip like all of their albums do. nothing surprising here
| |
